Here's a fun little trip through the evolution of an essential country rhythm guitar part. We start with a classic strum, then add an alternating bass line to turn it into a bluegrass strum, then we learn how to create a boom chick rhythm. Finally, we go to just single notes and create a Luther Perkins rhythm like you would hear on a Johnny Cash record.

Brad Paisley has top notch rhythms. He is known for lead solos but if you listen to the guitar “tic tac “ that he plays over vocals, they are fantastic.

Luther kinda progressed through all of these styles at times. Such a great place for anyone to start. When I was little I could play Luther songs with the guitar in my lap and just using my thumb over the top. Without Luther, I am certain I wouldn't be playing guitar. His stuff was mostly simple, and with minimal skill, someone can learn an entire song. Country music was forever changed by him so most definitely, my favorite country player has to be Luther Perkins.

Love this kind of stuff ❤ I'm in the process of figuring out the best way to approach lead, as I want to learn that, but this rhythm stuff is very important. Thank you for your videos ❤

First of all, love this and your sound. I had stepped away for the rhythm part that starts at about 2:35, and I thought it was acoustic guiar, but then the snappy sound is great too! Second: Pete Anderson. Rhythm guitar doesn't have to be chords, and his playing on stuff like "Please Please Baby" reminds me that a low-end single line is rhythm playing, and then on "Readin', Rightin', Rte. 23" it's this great little cluck. He's the best!

Western swing rhythm guitar - Ranger Doug Green. Much closer to Freddie Green with Count Basie. With rhythm guitar like that, you don't need no stinkin' drummer!
