I remember when I was eighteen years old the lady of the house insisted I clean the floors on my hands and needs in order to get every crevice of the kitchen floor. I was to clean twice and rinse once and repeat, then she would inspect, and I would repeat this ritual on each of the tile floors including the bathroom. Needless to say, I finished college and quickly received a position as a legal secretary with no scrubbing involved .... thank you very much.

My grandmother used to say this is the only way to wash the floor but you forgot to use a butter knife wrapped in a cloth and run under the baseboards to remove any water line. ( Rinse water tends to draw dirt from under the baseboard outward as it dries and so must be removed before waxing and polishing can begin )

I do that, personally, for my own house. However, there are, due to illness, times during which I am unable to clean my house. I have found that hiring a stranger is too stressful, AND I know better than to ask, or, rather, tell a stranger to do it my way. But I do ask one of my granddaughters to do it, and, as she loves me, she would do it without pay. But I know that it is asking her to go above and beyond, so I pay her. I also use an old toothbrush to get the corners.

Everything Lady Campbell says about the new rich is true. I have experienced working at"The Big House" and I was treated with courtesy and respect by the old family who had lived in the house for around 400 years and had links to the Royal Family. I also worked for a newly made multi-millionaire. What a f***er!!!! Nasty, impatient and treated his lovely staff like dirt. I believe in that case that the riff-raff were at the big house and the ladies and gentlemen were serving them.

Being OCD I can't help but notice at Lady Collins dinner party the candle is crooked in the candleholder. This is utterly disturbing and quite unacceptable at a fine table with special guests of such high standing. To help keep the candle stay in place melt a small amount of wax in the candleholder, then place the candle in the candleholder and give it a little twist and press down gently to straighten the candle.

There is no need for such mindless cruelty today, there never has been. Those who hunt will huffily say that foxes are a nuisance, they don't say that the quickest humane way to kill them is by a clean shot. The philosopher Diogenes (a.k.a. “The Dog” 🐕) once had the misfortune of being captured by pirates. With the aim of selling him off into slavery, the pirate captain asked what sort of work he was good at. After careful consideration, The Cynic replied that he did not recall ever being good at any sort of work - but, he added, he was rather skilled at ordering people about. By the time they landed at the nearest slave-market port several days later, the difficult old man had made the pirates’ lives so miserable that, despairing of him ever fetching them a profit, they released him. The long-suffering pirates even gave him the money for his return fare home - if he promised to make the sea voyage on board the ship of their most hated rival...

Of course she was very old by then, but after discovering that I was her great grandson (I was four years old and she had asked as I stood at the bottom of her bed, 'And who are you?'), she rang her little bell for something and said, 'You know, Duncan, you just can't get the staff, these days!'.

It amazes me how some of these people cling to their delusion that they are somehow part of a "ruling elite". These people try desperately to keep up appearances but it is clear to see that money is somewhat tighter than they would care to acknowledge. Great fortunes are almost always new fortunes, so these old-moneyed types often resort to pretense and snobbery when they can't keep up with the conspicuous lifestyles of those 'ghastly' newly rich parvenus.

  • @jamesbullock60

"These people" do not fancy themselves part of the "ruling elite". They know only too well that fortune lasts very few generations, and influence perhaps a little longer. Theirs is no pretense or snobbery. They do have some of the vestiges of past grandeur, a house, some jewelry, a way of speaking and knowing when to speak and of what, but mostly some soupçon of life as it was without the wherewithal to live it. They are the downwardly mobile, the nouveaux pauvres, conservators of historic values and perhaps refinement, the living memory of family and cultural histories. New people and new money do not have this knowledge and these associations; they depend upon these has-beens to be examples of their new stations in society, to teach them the values, behavior, and refinement, the folkway essential to their settling into their newly acquired status. In a word, they embody the "class" to which the newcomers aspire, and they know that they have value only to the extent they share what they are and know. Otherwise, they will recede to the fringes of humanity.

Lady Campbell is a phoney. She names herself after her former husband called Colin Campbell, She was only married to him for one year in the seventies. She was born in Jamaica and lives in a large house which she passes off as a castle. She pretends to be aristocratic, but you can see by the friends she has that she is just a another wannabe with delusions of grandeur.England if full of similar people. That is why they cannot afford to pay employees above minimum wage . Rob

The young man was absolutely passionate about the weapons. Knew so much and eager to learn yet he made all sorts of excuses for the blonde. He almost chose with his member. Luckily he decided on familiarity.

He would have done better to have employed Antony rather then the woman whose parents had previously worked for him, I thought. I wonder how long the woman worked for him before deciding it was too much for her?

Most have never worked in their life so do not understand what the “title”of a job means. Just expect everyone does everything and be happy for the privilege. As someone pointed out they are “asset rich money poor” so they are always trying to impress to create an air of being rich and an invitation to an occasion to be “seen” as rich. Princess Olga says her gardener told her he would not lend his tools but here he is lending his tools to Susan to do an edge. What did she expect, someone run to the shop and buy one for her to use for a couple of minutes. Lady Campbell is not a lady she is not entitled. Pompous prat.

They must hate their bad luck of having been born in the 20th instead of in the 17th century like their ancestors who could afford such cheap slave labor and at a time when nobility was not taxed.
