    On this note, you can’t just “force diversity to make cringey quotas” People actually have to be interested in politics and run on their own accord. Granted if more diverse people of character step forward and had good opinions and policies that people agreed with and voted on, then great! But the point is The people have to want to be involved in politics themselves and run their own campaigns, not “propped up artificially for the sake of “looking like you care about representation “

    That speech was about George Floyd incident, the full speech was about how they are debating that incident and racism against minorities and there was no minority voice and perspective in the room, and that they should watch out for that in the future. His portion was 8 minutes, in a debate that ran for 2 hours.

    The issue is that people in ethnic minorities who are interested in politics apply to these roles and are instantly shut down and pressured enough to dissuade them from continuing in politics. From my own anecdotal experience, it sometimes feels like people want you to fit in a certain box and will try to tie you down to that box when you try to branch out. This is my experience in the uk

    @@So1asola that’s just how it is in all Western democracies. If you’re not “one of the good ones” ie; validating every political position the majority holds by just being a minority, looking pretty and parroting that perspective you’re not welcome. You’re missing the first part of his speech. He’s saying that there’s some sort of policy problem that’s hurting non-white communities and that’s happening because most of the people in government are not white and therefore have no exposure to said problem. If you move to Ghana, you may not be black but you still enjoy the right to live in society and demand your voice be heard. But the problems of the Italian-Korean minority are probably pretty low on their list of priorities because most aren’t that. Even if a group is only 4% or 2% or 1% of a population, they still deserve to have their complaints taken seriously and addressed if they’re legitimate. This guy is saying that the white ministers of government need to listen to non-white communities more; not suggesting some sort of racial quota.

    Exactly. Plus, look at the responses- who are giving you context? Who is explaining the position in the bigger picture? Who are taking the time to explain "reason", and who's just exclaiming "hell yeah!" ? Like, it worries me when people aren't assessing who and what their takes align with. And of all times to have to get something off his chest, it was a clip he didn't properly research? Barbs, maybe you've been hanging around the wrong folks or been listening to some sus people- you normally have a more nuanced take than this, or at least, do the research. Maybe you need to assess if this is a case of confirmation bias, since in this case, you seemingly didn't look deep enough into what was being said. If it is... Maybe ask yourself why this is your bias.

    You're spot on. It's even worse when people complain about lack of diversity in works of fiction. I've seen people complain about an apparent lack of diversity in the Harry Potter series, and others respond by saying that considering what UK demographics were like at the time the series is set, it's actually more diverse than could be expected, as the proportion of main characters known to be from ethnic minorities is greater than what there were in the UK population at the time. Furthermore, they're FICTIONAL CHARACTERS - they can be whatever race the author wants them to be! In fact, given how long wizards had lived separately to Muggles, there's no reason to believe that their racial or ethnic distribution would be similar anyway

  • @RealUlrichLeland

    @RealUlrichLeland

    The criticism around diversity in Harry Potter is usually about the names of non British characters, not the number of them. JK was pretty awful at naming characters from other cultures, they're either extremely stereotypical like Seamus Finnegan or Padma Patil, or names that would never exist like Cho Chang (Cho and Chang are names from Korean and Chinese respectively) or Kingsley Shacklebolt (the surname shacklebolt for the only Carribbean character is a not so subtle allusion to his ancestor's being enslaved). It would be like if she wrote a book where all the American characters were all called something like Chuck Johnson III.

He is talking about diversity has "not white male" while you are talking about it as "representative of the public". In places that already possess ethnically diverse populations, I believe that their governments should ideally represent the population that they govern, not with strict quotas but moreso along the lines of mutual integration, respect/education (with the goal of getting a broader range of people involved with their politics), and opportunity to become involved. The idea of imposing "diversity" in a place that doesn't really have it to begin with makes no logical sense.
