    At the age of 66, I occasionally think about and even revise my personal list of ten greatest albums. “Fish Out of Water” has never left my top five in almost fifty years. It is truly the perfect mating of a great singer/bassist/songwriter with a wonderful orchestral arranger. Truly a perfect album. I wish CS had done more solo work during his period of greatest creativity.

    Absolutely agree. This is a FANTASTIC and largely unknown album. It betters some Yes albums. Chris did some “solo” work much later on, in collaboration with Billy Sherwood, and it was garbage compared to this.

  • @cedarwaxwing3509

    @cedarwaxwing3509

    2 ай бұрын

    @@markdaniels7174 A fair amount of credit for “Fish” also has to go to Andrew Price Jackman for his brilliant arrangements and orchestrations. I don’t mean to sully his memory, but I think Chris’s substance abuse issues later in life drained a lot of his creativity. When you compare his writing and brilliant playing up through maybe “Drama” with his later contributions, his decline as a creative force in Yes is obvious. In interviews, he sometimes said he’d like to do a second solo album, and there are occasional Squire contributions in the Yes canon that would have made amazing solo album contributions (e.g. “Parallels” from GFTO, “Onward” from Tormato, “Open Your Eyes,” even as late as “Can you Imagine” from Magnification). I think Sherwood made it a mission to try to keep Squire productive, so I appreciate his efforts, but the Conspiracy material just wasn’t the same. But at least we got one perfect album out of Squire, and I agree that it is not only the best of the solo albums by the band members, but was actually better than some Yes albums, which will here go unnamed!

    As a life long Yes fan and Chris Squire worshiper (as a bass player), I never heard this gorgeous song before. I got chills and felt a bit euphoric, like Yes and Brain Wilson had a baby. What a song! And I thought I heard a lot of Squire’s solo stuff!

    This video is the true reason I know and love yes. Some time ago all I knew was Roundabout, because of the bass line, (I play the bass) and I’d tried to listen to the rest of Fragile but I could never really get into it. And then I saw this video pop up, and after ignoring it a couple times, I played it and loved it. So I decided to check out the rest of the album, and you can imagine how excited I was when I heard the transition from hold out your hand to this, I fell in love with the band and Chris Squire. Thank you!

    A song of its time, for its time? It is typical of the age and genre, but it lacks the...consequence that comes the gift of greater musical economy and utility such as are the hallmark of great popular song. Such songs work only within the scheme of an album that is through composed and designed to be listened to at a single sitting (as was once always the case), but a listener today, unprepared for its...meanderings, would likely be challenged to embrace its musical pretensions absent that context. I wonder, what came both before and after this song on the album. Where in the albums emotional 'arc' does it fall?
