You Bet Your Life #57-03 Groucho shakes, rattles and rolls; Chief Cochise ('Money', Oct 10, 1957)

Комедия

Remarkable-- try to ignore the audience laughter when Chief Cochise enters. Some of Groucho's jokes are even more uncomfortable to watch, e.g., referring to Chief Cochise as a foreigner (ouch!) Clearly no malice is meant by Groucho, who was usually much more enlightened in other race matters. At least Chief Cochise gets a word in about trying to recover lands taken from his people.
Oh, and also, there's some more great dancing by Groucho at 18:00.
COUPLE #1: Frankie Macaulay / Chief Cochise
COUPLE #2: Jen Jackson / Larry Bohner

This was not too long before my dad met Nino. They were pretty great friends. Nino was a teller of tall tales, but he also did and saw a hell of lot in life. His official birth year was 1874, so he really would have been 83 here. He couldn't get insured on set if he was over 80 so he sawed a few years off. He gives a clue here when he says he went to Washington with his father. Chief Taza died in Washington in 1876. I knew Nino on and off until his death in 1984.

If you were disabled or mentally challenged, you were ridiculed, but what could you do? If you were a woman, you were hit on all the time, if not sexually assaulted, but what could you do? In those days ( I was there) most folks were quite thin. It was the rich that were heavy set... they had the money to spend on food - many of us did not. There were not near so many restaurants as there are today - and the food was simple and clean - no chemicals, etc. Today? Wheweeee we have tons of restraurants, tons of money and tons of chemicals - so we look like we have plenty of tonnage, too.

Imo, Jen Jackson was quite attractive. She was a rubinesque beauty. I believe the term used these days is, BBW. She was definitely made of sterner stuff than most women today. She was no whiny Karen. She came across as a strong, confident, classy, no nonsense woman. In fact, she reminds me of my aunt Eppy with the blonde curls, full figure and confident nature.

The guy was exposed as a phony by real Apaches. Made the claim he was born in 1874 and raised in the wild country of Sonora Mexico till the early 1900's. All false. I read the book myself and found a lot of false claims. He was a white man born in Montana about 1897. He fooled a lot of people but never the Apaches.

Am I the only one who feels Groucho helped Chief win by choosing a question about WWII? The chief knew it right away. Groucho was very careful in his conversation with him. He threw in a few Groucho jokes, but was relatively serious. Even promising to bring Frankie's father's navy to help in the fight for getting some Arizona back. I thought Groucho was really sweet here. Also with his matchmaker attempts with Bettina. 😂

Chief Nino Cochise, his real name is Robert Lee Majors, was not the grandson of Cochise. Cochise did have a son named Taza, but Taza was never married nor did he have any children. The guy posing as a chief was actually an actor, born in 1909. He was in his late 40's in this episode. The native Americans in Arizona deny this man's story. He died in 1984 at the age of 85
