Correction: The photo with the birds is taken by Rui Palha.
But if you look at the shy and introvert Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work who is arguably one of the most praised street photographers to have lived, you will immediately notice how far is stands from his subject and how he took advantage of his introverted or shy personality.
Just because you are extremely shy or introvert, doesn’t mean you can’t produce incredible street photography in the street.

TheJwwinter I agree partially. All gear, great and small, comes with its advantages and limitations. I really love my modest gear, and I think I am still in the process of learning how to use its advantages and it’s limitations to my benefit. I play with the idea of upgrading, but I used to play music (I’m a drummer) with many guitarists, and the best advice I ever took was “Reduce your kit bro! It’ll make you a better drummer.” By reducing my kit to a kick, snare, and hi hat, I had to become more creative with my fills and beats. As a photographer, I like to leave the apartment with my camera and one lens: you learn two things: what are the advantages and limitations if that lens. My creativity must adapt to my gear, and with that, my creativity becomes limitless.

@@SupernovaFilms23 I am not really a photographer as in I have no intentions of making money out of it. Are you ? Do you make money off the drumming ? I learnt to play the guitar and the piano quite a few years back, but again that as well that was just a hobby and for that reason I am not sure how worth can upgrading my stuff will be worth. May be someday if I have the extra cash and space I'd like to buy the Dual Rectifier.

"There doesn't have to be a person in your photo" is probably the most helpful thing I've heard when it comes to this. I'm really not one for having to get close to people if I don't have to, but even with an 85mm lens (which I somehow turned into a walk-around lens), I still sometimes do. _However,_ where I live has _PLENTY_ of things that aren't people. Just need to go look for them. And a helpful thing to see was that you don't always need eye contact or even people looking at you. Sometimes it just isn't possible.
Wearing a photo journalist vest helped me a lot to get permission from subjects to take pictures of them

Thanks a lot! Yeah, that's true. That can also help!
I’ve recently been using disposable cameras and I have noticed a huge difference in terms of random people being comfortable with me shooting them. I guess people automatically assume I am a tourist so they don’t see it as threatening as opposed to me walking around with a DSLR. I know a DSLR has its place as a better overall camera, but there is something nostalgic about using a disposable camera and developing it. I don’t have a fear of rejection, but I do have a fear of getting decked in the face. Hasn’t happened yet, but that’s always my fear.

It's not about being shy it's deeper than that . Where I live you can't point a camera at someone without risking getting into a confrontation. It's less hassle to photograph flowers or spiders they don't get upset

This is my first comment on KZread ever. I just wanted to say, love how authentic you are. How you present the "idea" of street photography. 2 years ago I made a project in Lisbon about the people, who work on the streets, and one of the idea was to hide behind the corner and wait for the action, after that I was coming to this person and asked in Portuguese (I don't know this language so good, believe me) if I can take a portrait! That was soooo scary :) But taste of adrenaline and a good work worth it! Keep going! :)

Just found your channel. Great stuff. Although I'm not a shy person, and generally have no problem approaching strangers, I too found street photography intimidating at first. However, as you explained, most of the fear is unjustified. It's in your head. In fact, quite a few people like being photographed if you're nice about it and smile. I think the most important thing is to have fun, and relax. Don't creep people out by trying to sneak shots with a telephoto lens. It also helps to have a story ready such as "I'm a photographer and I'm doing a project on XYZ." I found that it really helped to go to places where people would be more accepting of what I was doing. Starting out in Chinatown or mid-town Manhattan built confidence because you can blend in with tourists, and the locals are used to people with cameras. Also, after having a few positive experiences where I had a nice conversation with complete strangers, most of the fear disappeared. Lastly, I find it helpful when you first go out to shoot on the street to just shoot some quick throwaway shots right away, just to get things moving and to get you into the right mindset, rather than waiting for that perfect frame.

Very nice advices, I had that same fear and shyness everyone has. It’s just something we need to get comfortable with and for yourself out of the comfort zone. I’ve been doing street photography for 3 years but only one time I was yelled at. Usually people are nice if you SMILE GENUINELY at them.
great video, thanks for doing it!
Thank you for having the courage to make this video and giving us other introverts inspiration. A lot of what you said hit me in the gut cause it was all true. Alot of times I believe I use the crutch of being a soloist and not having any real network of other photographers to work with to hold me back. It really does feel so uncomfortable sometimes when I do go out. And when I do I don't go out as long as I initially intended. So instead of taking 1k photos of maybe 100 different subjects I may get 10 or 20. In any event thanks for the pep. We really needed it.

Hi Jcine, I really appreciate your kind words. So many of your have commented that this video was needed hehe. Welcome to the channel :)!
Great video, Frederik. At least three fantastic quotes for my notebook: - "My taste of pictures is higher than my skill level" (that's fine, being humble will lead you further than being arrogant). - "Shy and introverted makes you perhaps a better observer" (and to take great pictures you must see them FIRST). Besides, extrovert people usually want to be IN the pictures instead of taking them. - "Fear of rejection is worse than rejection". So true. It's the same when you try to pick up a girl, haha. BTW, you surely know since you know Spanish, but for the rest of the folk here, the reading in the table where you were drinking mezcal says: "Todo con medida. All with a measure". Exactly. And you don't need a lightmeter for that. Thanks agains for your advices.

A very self effacing video. I agree with all you have said and a lot of the comments listed below. There is a barrier in our minds when we take to the street. I guess we are on display, even performing with a prop .... the camera. It draws attention to ourselves which can trigger anxiety. As a landscape and architecture enthusiast, I’ve never felt anxious going about my work. I tend to be very focused (No pun) on my subject. I travel to far away places with no qualms whatsoever, but when I’m in a public place I do find anxiety creeping in. I find reasons not to get the camera out. It’s something I need to overcome and deal with. Glad to hear I’m not the only person out there living with this dilemma. Great video Gary. Glad to share my thoughts with you.
Nice vid man. I recommend going with three friends, two of which who don't care about photography. They walk off and chat and you break off and shoot. You get the comfort of not being alone and having some 'normal' people to go back to. It really helped me cross over into going out alone and feeling comfortable.
"this is how you're gonna get shot" lol. This is why I am not much of a street photographer. I'm gonna try again. Thanks for this video

I’m very extroverted and rather a nice person. It’s very enjoyable for me to get in peoples faces for a shot. Other times I wait for someone to walk into frame. I live close to NYC and shoot there about six times a month. Excellent video!!!
Regarding managing expectations, this is my take on landscape photography, what I like to do. For various reasons, I take most of my photos in my neighborhood and nearby parks and although I sometimes compare them with what professionals have done in exotic locations, I then say to myself that they may have taken the best photo in [insert exotic location here], I have taken the best photo in Bell Park and that pleases me.
This is a good video. I enjoyed it a lot. Quick and to the point, with all very valid points! Followed. :) looking forward to more.

I've been trying to get my head around the street photography thing but I find people are extremely concerned of having their photos taken - especially candid shots. Asking someone to take their photo is not what I consider street photography but instead; portrait.. If I wanted to do portrait I would set up a studio in my basement and have people come banging on my door at very inconvenient hours of the day wanting their promised photos... No thanks! In a world of media hype and personal privacy, street photography is and can be dangerous. I have heard of police officers taking photographers cameras and literally busting them on the ground right in front of the owner.. In a small town of 60k, street photography can be intimidating to anyone. One should be able to enjoy this type of photography - not fret about it!
