Hi Keith. That was superb. Most instructors relegate the choice of grip to simply a matter of personal preference. This was the first time I have heard anyone convincingly recommend the reverse grip over a standard grip because of the stability advantage. Furthermore, the mechanical advantage of a reverse grip for stability and mobility is even more pronounced if you are carrying a longer than standard cane (for example 39 inches instead of 36 inches). With no training I've been instinctually carrying it horn forward for years. It just seemed the proper way even when I was originally told I was doing it wrong. 😁

Well, that was quite encouraging because it confirmed something I had come to suspect through trial and error (and just maybe a bit of speculation rooted in an admittedly low/rudimentary level of FMA training.) I need to hit your website and have a look at what you offer.

Other instructors carry horn facing back and that seems to be more conducive to a quick transition into a fighting grip (simply slide the hand down/forward). Keith's horn forward position requires an additional twist to be in the same horn-down fighting grip. Would love to see Keith put a video out on making this transition from normal walking to a ready to fight grip.

If you left knee is sore which side is best to use your cane? Do you place it next to your sore leg or use it forming a triode in placement?

Interesting. Someone else in the comments brought it up, but holding horn-back lets you slide your hand down quickly if you want to hold it like a sword. That said, using it one handed I see your point.

I love Cane master canes - they are THE best. But I disagree with these tips on how to hold and use the cane. The instructor is showing off spinning the Cane in preparation to strike. IN real world self defense I recommend not showing off like you are in a Kung Fu movie. Just use the cane to strike unexpectedly and strike hard - one handed forehand strike, switch to a backhand grip and hit with a one handed backhand strike, then go for finishing two hand top to bottom strike. It similar to kicking - fancy high kicks to the head aren't practical in the real world - hard kicks to the shins and groin or kicking punks and thugs when they are down - yep.
