+RogerSmith2004 every time I see one in any anime I legit almost cry lol

His animations do a great job in hiding the workflow and the thought process that gave birth to the result. A lot of the frames seem to make no sense in the western sense of timing and spacing, practically ignoring the 12 principles disney animators figured out with the bouncing ball. The frames themselves could be held anything from one exposure to even four, and while the motion is rarely smooth, each image has enough time to be observed and felt by the viewer. The spastic timing of the drawings gives the animation texture and rhythm. Basically, it's like the motion itself is stylized and exaggerated, not only the shapes of the characters or the effects.

Jum Jum that's exactly what resonates most with me when it comes to his work. What Kanada did was just so fun and over the top. You can tell he was someone who loved what he did.

I quite honestly believe he also simply did not know the fundamentals discovered by the disney animators, which could be how he found his pose-to-pose-limited-animation -method (especially if he was under pressure of small budjet from early on) and thus discovered something nobody had ever even considered doing before him.

Awesome video, I enjoyed every minute of it. I got to learn so much about Kanada.

They had a takeshi murakami exhibit here in Boston and I spent hours reading interviews and stuff he did in books in the gift shop

It's so cool to see who inspired Imaishi! His style is still definitely unique though. I've always loved his shading technique and use of hard shadows 🔥

Great video! I do want to point something out though, Imaishi really isn't the only one who can pull off kanada style, Jun Arai changed it and pulls it off just as well, his work is equally as much a homage as imaishi's.

Arai is far from Yoshinori Kanada's style in terms of movement, the only thing similar are the effects Akira Amemiya seems to me the best example of the purest style, not Imaishi

Correct me if I'm wrong but the idea that "superflat" is an art movement is a misunderstanding by various journalists based on a flawed Wikipedia entry. I've never seen him call it that, merely use it as a term for the aesthetically flat nature of Japanese art. From everything I've read from the man himself he doesn't see it as "his movement" as much as a description for Japanese art overall. He even compared Hokusai's paintings to Kanada's; he sees all of it as "superflat". Also you could argue Kanada himself chose Imaishi as his successor. Of all the Kanada-school guys, he hand-picked him to collaborate on the Musashi: Samurai Legend intro after all. Lastly while he was the first stylistic superstar I'd personally not really go as far as to call him "the originator" as there was obvious animator style variety in early Toei films too, moreso than what you'd find in Disney films. Wan Wan Chushingura for example had some shocking variety.

Dead Stock Paradise while I do agree that I have misinterpreted superflat as a movement. So I do apologize for my plain ignorance and lack of knowledge in that field. I feel as though he deserves the title as the originator even if it's such a bold claim. To me, what Kanada did was show others that is fine to add your own flair to scenes. Kanada may have taken influence from that film, but I feel as though he made it a staple to wild out and fun while animating.

Kanada himself has built the foundation of almost all 2D Japanese animation to date, techniques he experimented with/pioneered were all influences and referral points to what we have now, In EVERY 2D JPN animated piece there are foundations of what he built, in a sense he is the originator really. For those with an interested in Japanese animation I feel it's important to really at least know who this guy is. Also Beam, I'm glad you mentioned Birth! this video does need some more exposure.

Butters, keep doing what you do yo

This was pretty great. But you have some problems for me. The main one is the pacing, it just feels awkward to me, why is each sentence so spaced out? Along with the clunky sentences it makes the video feel dragged out and have little impact. Sorry for being so negative but I assure you I will stay around to see more great content and your growth.
