i live in the ytv area....back in the late 80's early 90's prisoner cell block h was monday nights only ( and i got sick of hearing the bloke at the end of episode saying it will return in 2 weeks time )...but they finally got their heads together in 1993 and showd it twice a week ( mon and thurs ) till the end.....then a couple of years later channel 5 repeated it...now ive got them all on dvd...get in!!!!

There were some territory disputes involving Yorkshire Television involving North Yorkshire with Tyne Tees and the area around King's Lynn and Lincolnshire with Anglia and parts of Derbyshire with ATV/Central and Todmorden and parts of Rochdale and Saddleworth near Oldham with Granada

There were relay transmitters for King's Lynn and Wells that broadcast Anglia. My garandparents could watch YTV, Anglia and ATV/Central.

By 1982, IBA had to built three low power relay to allow viewers in Kings lynn access to Anglia TV. For 6 years many people had bulit/put up high powers links to get Anglia. I believe nearly everyone switched and no one actully watched YTV in Norfolk.

I used to live in Hunstanton in north west Norfolk, and it was near impossible to get a signal from the Anglia relay. The Yorkshire signal from Belmont would be crystal clear though, even with just a set top aerial. Its still the same today with Freeview

I don't understand why; YTV, despite the name, was objectively speaking a much better service than Anglia, and their news coverage coverage still covered Lincolnshire and kings lynn itself. The only real criticism of YTV is that, unlike just about everybody else, they didn't use in vision continuity. Which, let's be honest, only sad sacks really care about. Then again i'm most certainly biased given that just about everywhere i've lived over the last 28 years has been a 15 minute drive from the Emerly moor transmitter haha.

@@whatamalike Just wondering in what ways was 'YTV considered a better service than Anglia?' I'd often try and pick up YTV but without success. We used to be able to receive Granada, HTV and Central back in the analogue days.

@@TaksimRed admittedly im specifically referring to the local news. I've watched many regional news services over the years (depending where i lived at any time) and always found Granada Reports and Calendar to be the best.

They did cover a lot of it, however North Yorkshire was always a battleground of viewer loyalty between them and Tyne Tees.

One area of Ripon didn't get Yorkshire Television, around the Palace Road area, they got Tyne Tees Television from Bilsdale above Helmsley North Yorkshire.

I picked up a crystal clear YTV in the centre of Nottingham, along with Central East.

@JFredUK No, it was actually ACP that was shown at 3.30. From around 1984 to 1988 ACP was shown Mondays and Tuesdays and S&D Wednesday-Friday (after earlier variations in the scheduling). From 1988-89 S&D ran five times a week, ACP being moved to an hour-long early-afternoon slot once a week, then when S&D finihsed in 1989, ACP was then stripped five times a week at 3.30 for a while. And yes, Prisoner must have been on a break - YTV scheduled it very sporadically in the early days.

Rather late in the 'day' i know BUT when i was the freelancing voice with Yorkshire Television my Griffin Hotel, located near the Leeds Rail station, could only receive Anglia Television. At that time there was much talk YTV about an on-air name change because of the soon transmitter change. I did put me point with just announce 'This is Television' adding, perhaps 'For the East of England. That announcement would NOT upset anyone!

That’s surprising - only able to receive Anglia in Leeds City Centre! Are you referring to the transmitter change in 1974 when Belmont changed from Anglia to YTV? I can see how the “Yorkshire” name wasn’t wholly appropriate given the larger area, but a new name may have alienated existing YTV viewers. As an aside, prior to 1974 - and to a point even now - Anglia’s signal covered a huge part of the UK. It can be received pretty clearly in North and East London, and up in the north, Belmont’s signal travelled up the coast into Co Durham.

MY facts may be 'surprising' BUT are certainly True.The vast coverage of Anglia Television was confirmed to me by Colin Berry. Colin wrote to me confirming he was watching me - yes ME - in vision 'from Norwich' at his home in North London. Now id better STOP @@CaptainSiCo

They do have control, you reduce the ERP in a certain direction. The deal was that Middlesborough, even though it's just outside Yorkshire, actually felt closer, culture-wise, to the North-East than Yorkshire, much of east North Yorkshire does. The other half of North Yorkshire is very difficult to cover due to its rural location and hilly landscape, much of it is uninhabited and thus doesn't get any TV at all via terrestrial techniques.

Yes Anglia did, in the Tuesday Market Place I believe.

Yorkshire Television = serving six million viewers

Mansfield in North Nottinghamshire received Yorkshire Television and Look North Leeds because the area was served by the Emley Moor transmitter.

It's still the case here now in Kings Lynn with Freeview that we get the Belmont transmitter

I could receive YTV from Emley Moor with an HG20 aerial in Tyne and Wear at one point.

I wonder what ep of Picture Box it was?

I know people that live in Nottingham recieve Central, but do they also recieve YTV as well?

@UKTVProductions Yes, quite a lot of North Notts and Derbys was covered by YTV as well, despite not being in 'Yorkshire', and unofficially the signal went much further. The Belmont transmitter in Lincs was handed over to YTV from Anglia in 1974, having previously been allocated to Anglia (which in itself covered a vast region with the signal being watchable even in Greater London). The impression I get is that many viewers in Lins and Norfolk found the YTV service very Yorks-centric, though.

I think some parts of North Yorkshire are covered by Granada from Manchester.

My grandad told me that he knew a couple who lived literally a few minute walk away from the Emerly moor transmitter, so as a result was actually too close to pick up the signal! So, they had to settle for tyne tees. But were also able to pick up a very fuzzy signal from Granada!

Yorkshire television went as far down as east anglia and yet didn't cover north yorkshire...wut?

This is to do with the Bilsdale transmitter in the North Yorkshire Moors, near Northallerton. Yorkshire wanted the transmitter, but the IBA gave control over it to Tyne Tees, as it's coverage area spread to Teesside and Country Durham and the like. Yorkshire were furious, so the IBA lumped them and Tyne Tees together under a joint holding company called Trident Television as a truce, and the Belmont transmitter was taken from an aghast Anglia and given to Yorkshire.
