It should be a fairly straightforward speedrun, just get through the tutorial then beat the impossible lair on the first attempt.
"By borrowing a page or two" should have been "by borrowing a Pagie or two"
Playtonic actually listened to the criticism about the Impossible Lair level and they rolled out a free update which adds checkpoints to the Impossible Lair at each Capital B fight. The checkpoints save your best remaining bee shield score when you reach them. In my opinion they make the Impossible Lair's difficulty spike way less punishing without making the Lair too easy, and it really balanced it out perfectly. Plus anyone who misses the old challenge without checkpoints can just choose to start the Impossible Lair from the beginning each time they go in for the original challenge. This same update also made it less tedious to obtain the Golden Try tonic, as you no longer have to create a new save and play the tutorial on each attempt, so even the most hardcore players will probably enjoy the update.
Woah! A plat former with an 8.5 by Damiani? Gotta try it
I see playtonic channeling their good old: BATTETOADS days with the final impossible lair
I love that Impossible Lair concept, reminds me of Breath of the Wild’s format where you can beat the final boss as soon as the game starts, as long as you’re good enough

I think that should be a standard for “challenge” based games, of which I wish there were more. MMOs really ruined the gaming industry when publishers realized it was easier and more profitable to just keep throwing new stuff in front of a player rather than making any one facet of it particularly interesting or well designed.
Hope they make another 3D game. I really enjoyed the first one and thought with a few lessons learned a sequel could be just the stuff.

Nobody wanted that game to succeed more than me, I backed it from the start; but it was a lifeless imitation of Banjo. It just had no charm and it wasn't fun at all. There was no sense of discovery or adventure because there was no context to the levels, it just felt like platforming videogame levels. This looks like the much needed improvement tbh.
@JazGalaxy

YourPalHDee weird. I just started it last week and I couldn’t disagree more. I’m loving it and I’m not even a huge Banjo Fan. I would have rated Banjo a 7 back in the day and I’d rate Yooka a 9 due to the lack of competitors in the modern market.

YourPalHDee I am having a ton of fun with it. And the bottom line, in my opinion, is that of NOBODY is making a genre you like anymore than ANY entry becomes better by comparison. Banjo couldn’t stand next to Mario 64 back in the day, in my opinion. But I find Yooka to be much better than Mario Odysee. Again, in my opinion. I love 3d platform games and The small gripes I have with Yooka don’t overshadow the fact that they are making a game NOBODY else is making. It’s like going to a Mexican food restaurant in Japan. No it’s not as good as anything in Texas, but If it’s the only one in the country, “pretty good” goes a long way.
Definitely on my wishlist. Man, you know... this got me thinking. Can somebody PLEASE pick Tomba up and do something with him? Klonoa too for good measure!

He didn't think the game did enough to prepare you for the difficulty spike at the end. Valid criticism, although that's the whole point of the last level I suppose.
The Impossible Lair is actually the best level in the game. It's sufficiently challenging in so far that you DON't feel overpowered, even after 40 or so bees. Very refreshing after Breath of Wilds auto-win animation after collecting the Divine Beasts.

I had no idea this game was a thing.
I think it's a hard thing to nail down a final level where you can tackle at anytime. BotW was very easy after beating the divine beasts and considering the speedrun times it might be easy in general. I suppose what they should do is having a dynamic difficulty, maybe make it harder so as one can't beat the game easily, but as you get abilities some things get harder and some easier acknowledging the upgrades you have.
This game is freaking great holy guacamole

Depends on your skill in 2D platformers. If you can beat Celeste, you should be okay for this game. And for completing the standard levels you gain more hit points for the final level. You can take almost 50 hits in the end. That should be possible ;)

I kind of see what you're saying about the end, as I have yet to complete it either and I'm starting to lose interest because of how little progress I'm making. Just opening the game to take a crack at the impossible lair and then dying and playing something else. HOWEVER, the final boss should be hard. You get 48 hits. It saves your progress and the amount of hits you have after completing each "stage" of the final level and you can skip right to that stage. So yes its hard, but not unfair. This is an amazing game

I'm a little less than halfway through the game with 7 hours clocked in. It really doesn't feel like there's a lack of content at all. The stages are generally pretty long (not to an obnoxious degree) and that stage count doubles with the alternate versions that are barely recognizable from their original designs. Not to mention the overworld design is extremely well designed and makes unlocking those alternate stages way more engaging (if you enjoy Zelda like exploration and light puzzle-solving that is). Also, the tonics add in a bunch of opportunities for fun challenge runs if that's your thing.
@alexpotts6520

It's really 40 stages since each one has two versions; plus the overworld hub is almost a game in its own right; plus it's not a $60 game. There's plenty of content for your money.
