just based off of the picture you took that shows part of your background in the top section of the display and the remainder of the picture being blacked out, this shows sync speed issues. When the image does this it's because at higher shutter speeds your top and bottom shutters actually open/close in unison only exposing a very small portion of the sensor as it travels. If your flash isn't synced properly you will get the "bar type" exposure because the flash only exposed the image at the given point instead of throughout the exposure. High speed sync fixes this by making several short burst to properly expose the entire sensor as the shutters travel from top/bottom or bottom/top (whichever way your shutters move during HSS)

As far as I know you need top pop up the flash of the camera as the signals to control the flash is a series of light impulses just before firing the lighting flash. So if you don´t pop up the inbuild flash no chance of communicating for the camera with the external flash I would say. Good luck!

have you checked your settings for high speed sync on the camera? could be a possible reason?

I just picked up this flash for a 6D and already having issues with misfire then it stops working. Even the test button will not work unless I shut it off to reset it. I used the Canon 600rt and that one works great. The hotshot is so flimsy too and poorly made. This was my first yongnuo flash and last. I'm looking at the Godox 685 one now.

I had a similar issue with this flash, it works fine with firing using the camera flash " wireless " but when it on camera I have no communication what so ever.. I unscrewed the bottom of the flash and turnout that the connector of the base was off and needed some welding.

You haven't had this issue with the 70d and the new one yet have you? do you just suspect it was a one off problem with that last flash?

I am not a canon shooter but it looked like you set the camera to manual and had the flash set to ttl.

Exactly, and that shouldn't be possible, so they obviously don't communicate. I am a Canon 70D shooter, and I also own a YN600EX-RT which so far hasn't given me any problems. (Except that it doesn't offer an optical master option, which unfortunately is normal for this model). The Camera menu should show E-TTL as an option when the flash is mounted, which it doesn't, so something is clearly wrong here.

ETTL II Meter should be set at Evaluative. Flash control E-TTL II meter Turn wheel to E-TTL II meter Press set Turn wheel to displays Evaluative Press set All Canon 600EX-RT & Canon 580EX II might run into the same problem if hotshoe is too loose. This type of shoe is not good as the large black wheel.

FlamingPumpkin13 When the replacement come. Make sure you set E-TTL II meter into Evaluative on your camera. I checked with ATG and they say to do that on third party flashes. On ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3, which I have, and Canon 600EX-RT, you can set into both modes. But ATG and Canon make designed their flashes to work better on average to Evaluative.

Got mine working by leaving batteries out until I use it, when I,m done I remove the batteries. Maybe this will work for you.

Same problem how ever switched from rechargeable batteries to alkaline and no over heating. Problem could be the higher amperage that rechargeable batteries put out. Rechargeable batteries have a higher amperage output than alkaline.
