Yolanda Charles on the Fender Dimension Bass | Fender
English bassist Yolanda Charles began playing music at the age of 15 and hasn't stopped since, mastering a command of funk, jazz, soul and reggae throughout the years. In addition to playing bass in UK funk-fusion band The Deep Mo, Charles has enjoyed recent recording sessions with Natasha Bedingfield, Sinead O'Conner, Daryl Hall and Dave Stewart. She has also recently added a Fender American Deluxe Dimension Bass V to her arsenal. In this video, Charles talks about the five-stringed funk machine that has served her so well.

Yolanda, so glad you're willing to stand up to trolls. I met you briefly last year (via a mutual friend) and I have nothing but respect and admiration for you as both a bass player and as a human being.
Thank you Fender video person for having someone talking about the instrument's features and not just playing.
Yolanda Charles RULES!!! ♥
She explained the bass so well. I love the sound and just purchased one for all the same reasons she explained it. I would add or reiterate this bass helps me get a more versatile sound but still distinctively a dimension bass.
Met Yolanda in London many years ago. A lovely lady and fabulous musician.
Inspirational player, and such a great communicator.
This is the only five that makes me actually want one. Also, Yolanda, you're great and an inspiration. :)
Lovely girl and she's great on bass.
Yolanda is such a great player.
Mark King, Yolanda Charles, Ida Nielson, Rhonda Smith are my favorite Bassist.
sweet, been waiting for this one.
Nice post Duncan :) I know nothing about the technical aspects of bass guitars, but as a drummer & creator of drums, I know a good bass sound when I hear it. Yolanda used this bass on a recent session with our drums, & the sound in the room & recorded was sublime. I suspect that's as much to do with Yolanda as it is the instrument.
Oh yes...a quite cool bass & player!...have to check this bass myself..:-)
stunning!!
Probably the best bass player to play alongside Weller. Yolanda and Whitey were tighter than a tight thing.
I gotta get me one of these!
I just saw you're on the new Squeeze album! Looking forward to hearing you!!!
❤️❤️
All of the Dimension Series have been discontinued, yet KZread shows the list as "UPDATED YESTERDAY." The Videos are all at LEAST five years old Great follow-up by your Social Media staff
her bass has a maple fretboard, however on the website the red coloured 5 string dimension has a rosewood fretboard

That's always bugged me & ultimately steered me away from Fender for my Bass Purchases... they can offer Mexican-made Strats in a wide array of colors AND the choice of Maple or Rosewood boards. However, when it comes to their highest Production Line Basses, wanting a Maple fretboard eliminates half of my color choices... (All 4 of them! :-/ ) Sorry, but at $1699-$1799 there are FAR more accommodating and helpful companies I'll pass my $$$ to.

She had Fender customize the bass for her with a maple fretboard. But she is a world class player

Sergio, I’m hardly Yolanda, Pino, Jaco, Cliff/Jason/Rob or “Insert Your Favorite Bassist _HERE_ ”. But I do consider myself a more-than-solid Semi-Professional Bassist who’s racked up a few hundred hours of Studio Time and Gigs, both spanning numerous musical genres, as well as having gotten *paid* for all the above. I truly recognize I have neither Yolanda’s skill set on the Bass, nor the name recognition. Still, at the $1799 price-point it was when it came out, I believe that even the “Bedroom/Basement Player” deserves more color choices that 4, and not to have each of the 2 fretboard woods “locked in” to specific colors, so that I couldn’t get a “Cayenne Red” with Maple Fretbord like hers... when it’s all of unbolting the Neck, swapping, and rebolting the Neck. When my Fender dealer inquired about it and was told it couldn’t be done, that’s when *I* was done with Fender Products. 🤬
Amazing ... just amazing ... *ker-ching*
how many centimeters long is the 21st fret?
The bass sounds good it's different than the regular jazz bass.
When are you touring and if so when are you coming to the United States specifically to the east coast .
Holy chops, Batman - that is some tight, in the pocket grooving!
1:08 "Maybe some, you know, like you can say that they're kind of retro guys..." Paul Weller perchance? 😆
Is this fenders "version" or "competition" with Ernie Balls Musicman Stingray?
Is this custom? The Cayenne body color in the 5 string version comes with a rosewood fingerboard.

For some ungodly reason, yes. Fender decided to a) only offer a $1,799 Bass in all of *4* Colors (especially when their $499/$599 "Standard" MIM Guitars & Basses were available in 7 colors no matter the Fretboard choice, and b) seperate those 4 colors into 2 for each Fretboard wood, and not allow *any* crossover. I tried email, phone calls, and a request from my local, High-End Fender Dealer to just take a Maple/Maple Neck from the other pile and install it on a "Chyanne Red" 5-string like Yolanda's for me to purchase. Apparent, that would have been too much trouble for Fender to make $1,799 and they utterly refused. They also lost me as a Customer for New Fender Basses, as I've gotten immaculate service from far smaller companies, and hopefully I'll find a separated Neck & Body on eBay to purchase and make my own... but I'm done with Fender's rediculous price hikes and utter lack of Customer Service (this was not the first time I had to deal with attempting to get an in-warranty repair from Fender :-/ ).
Yeah, I don't really like active basses that much, but again use the bass that fits the music you want to play
I'd love to see a shootout between this Dimension 5 vs. a G&L L2500 or M2500. Anyone?
I buy late 50s/early 60s Fenders.
What is 720p Video in 21 century are you ok ? Are your guitars like this too?
this bass is the Roscoe Beck in a slightly different package.
Yolanda is up there with the greatest bass players. My favourite second to Bruce Foxton.
The bass does not look like a Fender. And active too? I like it.
Fender needs to bring the Dimension back. They didn't give it long enough in the market to succeed. The only thing I don't like about it is the pickguard. Give it a smaller piece of plastic, and a chrome control cavity cover--more Jazz/StingRay, less Precision. My first bass was a 1992 Fender Jazz Bass Plus V Ash (with Fender Lace Sensor pickups and Philip Kubicki-designed preamp), and my next bass is definitely going to be a Fender-style 5-string.
I wish they'd bring this bass back instead of that ugly meteora line. This bass and the Roscoe signature 5 are my favorite Fender 5 strings.
-Beautiful girl!!! :)
Rip off of the Musicman StingRay which was designed and built by Leo Fender after he sold the Fender company and went on to make more innovative instruments elsewhere. They even copied his wheel neck adjustment which is something all Fender guitars and basses should have. If Leo had run Fender longer he would have continued to make more innovative stuff and not just build a p or j bass over and over. Better amps as well.
What about the American jazz bass? it's all about marketing...
wtf! i thought my GAS is over.
You speak too much, PLAY !
Musicman copy no respect om this end come.up with something original
