Or just don't hitchhike... It always amazes me how hitchhiking was so normal in the olden days. I know 'it was a different time' and blah blah blah but still, were there no murderers, nasty things done to women, or just generally evil people back in the day? I mean come on So many crimes from hitchhiking. Why it take so long to learn hitchhiking (getting into random person's vehicle/ horse) = potentially very dangerous... ? Huh .

Wow, whoever made up the story really didn't have much imagination. Most of the Kitsune stories are really fun and have the "victims" usually is some silly manner in the end. This one just seemed like a woman wanted to hitchhike and instead of a spice and wolf romance type story, we get just a-holes doing a-hole things. I would really like to watch more myth stories though, they are always the best.

To sum up. Poor Fox lady loved riding on a horse with a powerful guy - but did not want to put out or mess up the human’s life (as can happen in these tails) so it ran away. Eventually they caught it and tortured it. And “The MAN” did not realize that they went too far till the fox told them they are torturing fun loving foxes! Was this story a warning against hitch hiking, demanding sex from vulnerable women or the new warriors on the land are jerks. I am going with that last one.

I wouldn't call it a unhappy ending. Ok, she got tortured a bit, but she lived without too much damage as she was seen again afterwards in the same place doing the same exact thing. The real question is "WTF"? I mean, she tries to hitch a hike, she rides for a bit and then she turns into a fox and runs away. Why? What's the use? Did she need some human warmth? Or is "hitching a hike" a metaphor for something else that wouldn't be proper for me to mention?

I imagine Kitsune and Yokai stories to be ways in which people in Japan justified their failures and wrongdoings. Maybe in the year 2900 we might hear a copsune story about Imperial guards trying to catch a black yokai demon who resisted arrest or just looked suspicious.

Would you ever consider doing a video about how European fairytales are changed when translated into Japanese? I suggest this partly because a Russian friend and I were discussing the differences between Snow White. Where English translates the Evil Queen saying, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”, the Russian is very different. Another reason is that I was practicing translating a bit of Cinderella from hiragana, and that version didn’t have a fairy godmother appear but a witch (mahoutsukai), so it makes me curious as to what other familiar elements get changed when in another language.

I.. actually heard it ending differently? Like, the guard took the second girl and they torture her to death, and she turns out not to have been a fox at all this time, but a visiting princess from another province who got separated from her entourage in the mist when she went to wash her face in the river. Just as brutal for the guards - worse really, they end up executed in that one.
