I truly have enormous respect for this stand-by defence attorney. In recent sexual crime trials (e.g Jonathon Quiles, Henry Dinkins) the defence attorneys conduct was utterly abhorrent. They blatantly victim blamed, terrorised the survivors, played dirty in court, were overall disrespectful, cruel, and outright traumatising. This stand-by counsel had a job to do. He didn’t choose to represent Yohn. He didn’t blame the victim, Mrs Tina, nor the survivors (Tina’s family). He didn’t attempt to make his client look like a victim of a set-up or sabotage. He didn’t deny his clients guilt. He didn’t undermine the viciousness of the crime. He addressed the important legal matters (e.g mitigating factors). Humanised the defendant- which is his job. But it was done in an awfully tactful, respectful, and careful manner. It’s clear he cannot _stand_ Yohn (I’m amazed he didn’t throttle him on the spot when that letter from prison was read to the court). But he did his job, whilst staying within the lines of humanity. The prosecutors, Mr Jones and Ms Kek, and the stand-by-counsel defence attorney were all stellar in a crime of abject horror. (Also, I was most disturbed when he was menacingly staring at Ms Kek. You could see how utterly uncomfortable she was. I wish Mr Jones had swapped seats with her. I appreciate how the defence attorney kept his arm over the desk during the sentence verdict, essentially creating a barrier. It’s clear he didn’t trust his own client to not launch over and attack the prosecutors).

The victim blaming and re-traumatizing are, sadly, the disgusting standard in trials involving sexual assault. I'm old. I remember the 1970s when making jokes about rape was still a standard part of comedy routines. But today it is more difficult to get a rape conviction than it was 50 years ago. Another thing about being old is, I've met a lot of women in my long life. Well over half of them have been raped. And those were just the ones who happened to speak about it with me.

Good God for one thing I am glad these days are over. In my country we still have very old fashionned definition of "sexual assault" "rape" etc. (aka very strict definitions totally out of ways of wht consituted real sexual assult against women for ages) There are now voices to adopt a more modern definition of that and hopefully they will come into law some days. We typically change our laws once all the developped countries have theirs in place for about 20 years or so. (voting right, same sex marriage etc.) @@greenman6141

Did y’all hear the defense attorney at the end tell him that he wasn’t going to do that concerning the pre trial transcripts? Telling him it wasn’t a good idea?! I feel the defense attorney raised the issues he did in order to make sure that Yohn could not say that he didn’t have good representation on appeal. He knew that those motions would be denied. Absolutely knew it. But he needed to do his job to protect himself against any potential repercussions.

How is this piece of cr*p allowed to send her husband a letter from jail? She was wearing depends at the time of the assault, who gets aroused by assaulting an elderly woman. He is sick, perverted and evil. And everyone pointing out that he was so heinous, but didnt even know how to pronounce it as he pretended to be a lawyer. Thank you judge for applying the maximum and for the prosecutors for not offering a plea deal like so many do.
