I'll add 1:02 - Not really an error, but 金輪際現れない (konrinzai arawarenai), it's kinda a phrase to say "You'll never appear again for eternity", (basically saying Ai is so special that people like her will never ever appear again) 1:04 - Just something to add, 一番星 in this song does not translate literally to "first star", it's a phrase to say "Goddess Venus" which is God of Love (which fits to Ai) 1:08 - I think should be "With that smile, and how you say "I love you", makes everyone captivated to you" 1:29 - Translation error, I think it should be "We are all like a shadow to her, right? Don't spoil to non-manga readers

That dramatic chanting gives me goosebumps. “You’re my savior; you’re my saving grace” is an apt representation of how, for some people, idols have literally saved their lives. That’s a big responsibility to put on anyone, let alone a fake personality whose only duty is to perform well enough to keep up with the limelight. Then the droning in the background gives the song an ominous tone. The “oi/hey” in the background is audible, but comparatively faded. There are always eyes on you cheering for your success-or failure-as an idol. This song is awesome. So much wordplay and treats to analyze, haha.

Idols are a lie and being an adult fan means you liked being lied to. But what about those who cannot think for themselves yet and see idols as real pure fantasy beings of cuteness, mainly kids. It is just so sad to see to people love idols and even promulgate their growth when the idol industry is literally of the most brutal industries ever. It's no big secret that failed idols mostly turn to JAV stars to help out with the finances that were used on them to try and boost their career. Young girls go through rigorous training and they literally sacrifice everything for even just a chance of fame. Idols are just a pity and I just have to silently shake my head at people who genuinely support this kind of thing since the cycle just viciously continues and for every supposedly happy young star on stage, how many more are cast out with nothing but their pretty face and slender bodies to rely on since they basically gave up everything on this dream of theirs.. An idol's life, I certainly do not envy them. Fame always has a price but it's especially a bit more brutal for JP idols considering how their culture works. But hey, it's big money so I guess that always makes thing work out in the end right?

I don't know much about idols, since I'm really not a fan of them but based from what you said, it is definitely not as happy and purely full of smiles as it's presented to be. Which is heartbreaking. It is a toxic culture, an industry that sells lies to the fans who wishes to have their twisted fantasies fulfilled. It's a scary and foreign world for those of us who are not familiar with it.

I love how this song is so much than just some crazy beat and voices. It tells us about Ai's secrets that she keeps hiding and her lies. Everyone asks ger questions regarding love and else, but her answer is always that she isn't interested, but in actual reality she does not realise what love actually is. We also get a taste of backbiting by other b kamochi stars that are jealous of Ai's fame.

I just love this song lmao From how it portrays idols as simply as manipulators (unlike in other depictions where they were portrays as "victims), how they feed off and fed their fans with lies, how the fans reacts and worshipped them to such degree. I simply just adore this song for its essence of modern music, highlighting its relevance to the present, weighing down the reality of the entertainment industry whilst deftly telling the tale of a girl who stands in it accompanied by the thoughts of those around her and her own's. Everything starts off with a percussion, demanding the viewer: "Look at me. I am the performer. I am the star." alongside a rap that perfectly summarizes our subject at hand. A shining star that everyone wants to know everything about, down to her every flaw, ended with what she truly is. A perfect human being built upon lies labeled as an idol. Then comes the short choir, signifying the tone of her reality. Analyzing its surface, some might interpret it as "heavenly," "majestic," or "radiant." But the perceptive will interpret it as "dark," "cold," and "hellish." Similar to how people are separated on how they perceive the entertainment industry. Actual pure love because it's transactional, in the fans eyes as long as she is "mine" and for her as long as their eyes on "me" kinda thing. She demands your attention and you demand hers.

This brings me back to the old days of anime where characters would have image songs sung by the VA that talked about their emotions/personality. Basicslly painting an 'image' of that character. This is a perfect image song of Ai.

Fuck. Just, I don't even have words to describe how well this songs fits AI and the very first arc of the series. And those final lines... You can feel the love that went into this series but specially into this song.

The lyrics actually reference a short story that Aka Akasaka wrote specifically for this song. The story is called 45510 (spoiler to episode 2 or 3: it was Ai's phone password) and it is about an ex-member of B-komachi who finds an old interview of Ai that a fan reuploaded online. The first verse references how she skillfully dodged most questions in the interview, creating an aura of mystery to protect her private life while mixing some truth into it (for example, dodging the question about her type of man by saying she did not know what it was like to love). The second verse is about the rest of the group's jealousy against her. Despite this, deep down even her fellow idol who watches the interview could not help seeing her as the ideal idol, which is referenced in the chorus. The last verse, is the only part that does not come from 45510 and it is indeed Ai's perspective, most of it directly quotes chapters 8 and 9, which are Ai's flashback and her death.

the lyrics are genius. the first part of the song is from the pov of a fan, then pov of the fellow idols or stars in the entertainment industry then the last part is ai hoshino’s pov…. and i like the fact that they sneakily added aqua and ruby and called ai called herself maria in the song, maria being the latinised form of mary, a mother.

For those here who are kpop/jpop fans, can you IMAGINE how heavy watching this show will be for idols? They're the only ones truly able to relate to it

This song is really have deeper meaning. There are either 3 or 2 perspective in this song and props to Yoasobi to make the song somewhat related to the story. This is what happened when the Author takes a part in everything that are relating to his work

1:30 This part has to be one of my favourites, it just sounds amazing, and I feel some strange sense of nostalgia while listening to this part, and somewhat relate to the lyrics, and no, I’m not one of those edgy tryhards, I just feel some sort of relation to the words ‘This is not a joke, I can’t forgive you precisely’ and ‘You’re not perfect, I can’ forgive you’, it just sounds oddly familiar, maybe even relates to my own thoughts.

Also the "I am Maria" is described Ai perfectly; Mary means star of the sea good interpretation of Ai's character bcs she is a star, the most popular idol and an actress. I mean look at her eyes litterally has sea of stars. It associated as "beloved" and "wished for child".

It actually depends on how you write it. I feel like since it sounds like that same other word, it's like the singer says indeed "This is the true love", but the lyrics say otherwise, as "This is the true Ai". It's like a phonetic illusion, a lie. Which is quite a genius work for a character like Ai who always lies to share her love.

Her name hoshino also means my star (hoshi - star) (no - my) so her full name would mean love is my star (hoshi no ai)

After reading the meaning of the song, I immediately fell in love with this opening. The song gives us a happy and cheerful vibes when hearing it, but if you look deeply into the lyrics it's actually quite dark. Similar to how we look at idols and thought "omg being an idol is so great, they're always happy and smiling, I'm so jealous" When in reality being an idol is not as easy as you think. The cheerful lyrics mix with dark lyrics conveyed that beautifully. In the middle of the song, suddenly the melody becomes darker and the voice sound twisted as they sing a more "obvious" Dark lyrics. That part bring me chills. In the end of the song we got to hear Ai's last words before she died. "Aah I finally say it, this time it's definitely not a lie, I love you" This song is perfect, the cheerful theme, the melody, the way the singer sang it, boi this op had become my number 1 best anime op

The anime actually fits Yoasobi very much. A cute and sweet thing but when you delve in deeper, it's very dark

I like how the style of the song is very different from their other ones like the starting of the song is just plopped to you like there's no start start it alr started, I didn't believe this was the full song when the starting was like that but I have come to accept that this song is just super different from the other songs in the world

I think this is the first time I heard ikura-san's cracked voice while singing. It sounds cool.

fun fact: there is a part in the song's lyrics where it says honmono no Ai can mean "true Ai" and also "true love" and it makes sense cause the "true Ai"(the name) is what Ai is describing as what she should be while "true Ai/Love"(the word) is about her whole schpiel with lying and how she can't show true love. :)

The operatic singing is saying: "Oh my savior, oh my saving grace." For the first line, and then the longer one is: "Why didn't you save her, my saving grace? I will be forever by your side forever." Which I think is only in the opening for some reason.

"The song is so dark..." YOASOBI: "Yes." "But the beat goes hard." YOASOBI: "You're welcome."

This made me cry after ep 1. Can't imagine how manga readers felt when they heard it 😭

This sounds like a blend of Normal J-Pop with a sprinkle of Hiroyuki Sawano's music on it

So it's a sad song... The lyrics made me cry a bit

As a manga reader, I can say this song is dedicated to Ai, plus there are a lot of references, the last part tho 😭

the last few lines were enough to make me bawl my eyes out. i just finished the first ep of the anime (4/13/23) and when she said that, i started crying aha. but it's really good so far! can't wait for more episodes (the next one is estimated to air 1 day before my birthday so i'll consider it an early birthday present! :> )

I just watched the first episode last night, and I can tell you the same. I cried nonstop for hours (eventually crying myself to sleep) after seeing THAT scene 😢. Anyways, I’m all caught up now. Can’t wait for episode 4 next week

The anime made me cry in the first episode. The lyrics truly break my heart , especially the end . This song definitely shows an emphasis on how Ai was truly a cheerful carefree character. She had the character the epitome of a bright star . It's sad that I won't be able to see her in the future episodes of the anime .

"Maria" is synonymous with the so-called Virgin Mary. The non-religious Japanese perception of Mary is closest to that of Catholics. I think it has a strong meaning of a mother who gave birth to the Son of God. Ruby, on the other hand, says (perhaps jokingly) in the story, "Ai was conceived as a virgin." The use of the word "Maria" was probably influenced by Ruby's statement. *I'm using a translation tool, so there may be some problems with the wording.

The song and the anime of oshi no ko has a meaning on not just the dark side of idol entertainment but also another message on internet culture as a whole I know that the series tackles the dark reality of idol entertainment industry and majority of the entertainment industry But I like that it also tackles the horror and mental issues of Internet culture + online communities and how it effects on actors/ actresses mentality. Plus, how internet culture has become more toxic with reactionaries youtubers and people posting their opinion without understanding their own actions effect others (cancel culture, Twitter, etc.) It never takes sides and I like that it shows both the horrors and problems with both side
