Yngwie has stated himself that when he was young he "wanted to play Paganini (which is impossible even on a violin) but on an electric guitar", and that became his driving force to develop his style.

I'm slightly leaning toward Unlucky Morpheus, because I started listening to Yngwie when his first album came out and the song wore out a little over 37 years. Still great, but Unlucky Morpheus added a new freshness to the song so I can enjoy it again. Also, the production is a lot better in 2021, obviously. Of course it's not Yngwie's fault, that 1984's technology wasn't at today's level, but it's still a point for UM.

YM gets credit as a pioneer and is one of the greats, so the natural bias is to give it to him, but just song for song, I'd rather listen to the UM version. There is much more dynamic range to it; UM gave the keyboard part to the guitar, and the guitar part to the violin, and overall it's brighter, more dynamic, more explosive. As for violin not being a lead instrument? Really? Are you kidding?

Violin "not a lead instrument?!?" Um...sorry, but that's just spectacularly clueless. Much of the advanced violin repertoire is basically lead playing...shredding. People have been doing that sort of thing on violin long before anyone played like that on guitar. Yngwie's entire awesome style is essentially derived from violin (Paganini in particular). Sheesh... And yes, I play both instruments. ;)

@@NerdChannelBrasil I agree with your opinion, but the problem might be recent usage of the word 'metal'. For example, The Hu, the band don't play any 'electric' instruments, is now generally called 'Mongolian metal', not 'Mongolian rock'. If any music played only by traditional acoustic instruments could be called 'metal', we would not be able to distinguish between metal genre and others IMO Morin khuur might be lead instrument in Mongolian music.

Violin can definitely lead... there's a different taste in it, UM tried to follow Yngwie version and not put any extra violin flare, add more to it from its origins from Paganini... And for the Most part, this feels like it's written for the Violin in the first place, and no one saw it for this long... some shreds are even more in a richer taste and has more feels than the Guitar version... I love this, i wish they would add more classical elements, more advance play style, then it would have been unbeatable...

Yngwie's version is best - He composed the song! The violin cover just proves the baroque-era style of Yngwie's music sounds great, no matter the instrumentation (it would also sound cool as 8-bit video game synth) - it's the composed music! Another standout is Yngwie's VIBRATO - compare the melodies on both instruments. The Unlucky violin vibrato pales in comparison to Yngwie's "scalloped-fret" smoothness - which is strange, because the violin CAN have epic vibrato (listen to Midori's version of Paganini's 24 Caprices), this violinist needs work in this area - nice cover, though! 🌎✌️🌱🎶

Thanks for the video. Excuse me sir, with all due respect, "an absolute violin fan" would not say that violin is not for lead, it has been a lead instrument for centuries and inspired Yngwie and Syu for a reason. Meanwhile, guitar has been historically an accompaining instrument until the XX century. You are comparing acoustic violin with distortion electric giuitar...if you compared it with acoustic guitar you would have another opinion. Also, a fair and more interesting comparison would be with electric violin with distortion. Look Mark Wood's original "Fire and Ice" for an exquisit example, or for a comparision, one of these covers: MWROC festival live cover of Metallica's "To live is to die", or Mark's wood Led Zeppelin covers in the video "NAMM 2017 Mark Wood Rock Orchestra 100% GoPro Best Rock Performance Ever". Ahd of course, there's much more from more artists. Anyway I think Jill was amazing and her performance was, not better than the original, but at the same level at least.

Also can I say that the only advantage a guitar has over some one like Jill, is that it has a whammy bar, the advantage of metal stings. @@MetalAcademix I do not think it's streamed at the moment, they properly didn't think that there would be the interest in it, until they released the Eruption cover, which bought them a lot of interest from new people, even Slash from G'n'R. You can buy it www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B08Q4BZJGP/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_jOi6FbBBAHHEC To be honest, one of the reasons I love this band is because they do what they want to do, and are just happy if a few people like it. The 1st live stream they did of one of their DVD's, Shiren was surprised when there were more people watching the live stream than were at the show (650), then would not accept it when it was more than double that number.

you said not many bands do instrumental metal anymore, actually there is whole subgenre of power metal called touhou metal in Japan, which is usually instrumental (but not always) and based on themes and melodies from series of computer games called Touhou Project. All of these soundtracks were composed by the legendary ZUN and it's common practice in Japan that bands start their career with touhou arrangements, Unlucky Morpheus did that aswell with albums like Amazement Park or even many albums including Fuki's vocal, i think last album based on touhou they released was Paralellism Beta in 2015 or 2015, And there are many bands doing touhou metal, one of best are Iron Attack and Demetori, i'll leave you some links: speaking of Yngwie here is Iron Attack - Rising Scarlet (based on Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force): kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZ9mmcaSfpvLc7w.html and to introduce you to the idea of touhou metal: Here is the original Touhou theme Phantasm Boss - Yukari Yakumo's theme kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKqevJOMgKSuZso.html Demetori - ネクロファンタジア ~ (based on this theme kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaWA08SAeMSWg5c.html Here is Iron Attack live where the first song is based on same theme: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqquu49rZ7rdYbQ.html and here is Unlucky Morpheus with song SIVA on same theme kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKNrt8Vsls2udbQ.html

In regards to the violin that is being used specifically in the video, I don't think you'd really want to know. Looks to be a cheap violin by all indications: It looks to have a tail-piece with four integrated fine tuners (highly uncommon for serious players). Close-ups reveal it has plain-grain neck and sides of who knows what kind of wood; the finish looks like the kind of cheap synthetic finish you get from typical mass production violins; the bridge looks large, thick, and terrible; the violin bow is quite crooked (this is not tied directly to the violin, but it's an indication that probably a cheap instrument was selected). Of course I would wager that the violin that is actually used in the heard audio is not the one that appears in the video and I'm assuming that's what you're really interested in.

To me, Unlucky Morpheus is far beyond. This strictly depends on my personal preference, Unlucky Morpheus sounds a lot better to me as a total music. Yngwie is a super guitarist. His technic is just overwhelming....but, again to me, I'm truly sorry to say this, he sounded a kind of flat, I felt it was too long or felt enough on him in the middle. He sounded like a machine. Unlucky Morpheus version was short to me, I could listen to it another half an hour.

Malmsteen's first record was just before Satriani, so in 84-85 it was something very refreshing to metal and the guitar scene. This is also my favorite of Malmsteen's catalogue and my favorite cover. Very respectful to the original, but it doesn't have the attitude, passion, arrogance, power of young Ynwie. His vibrato and pick attack. I think it's not because the instrument. I want to see Maxim Vengerov or Janine Jansen doing it, but it will never happen. They don't play rock. Instrumental rock/metal is fluorishing today. Animals as Leaders, Polyphia, Intervals... so many talented bands and my two favorites: Plini and Arch Echo.

@@MetalAcademix Can I add "Rie a.k.a Suzaku" to that list. I'll put this link kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKVr1tWJl7K6cqg.html but the sound isn't the best, but keep an eye on the drummer, who in this video is 16, and maybe one of the best female drummers in the world, Kanade Sato. I saw them play in London and was blown away and I don't normally go for instrumental bands.

It sounds good on violin, obviously, the player is technically good etc. But people typically don't understand the difference between pioneering/creation and copying with technical skills. Sitting down and meticulously learning music note for note takes skill but it doesn't take creativity. Malmsteen is on a different level to these people covering him so anyone giving him second place here is laughable. Someone wrote that it sounds like the Unlucky Morpheus version is the original. What? Learn where 'classical' music and all the instruments come from, it's a place called Europe, not the Orient. Europeans aren't the ones imitating any music here because 'classical music' is actually their native culture believe it or not.

Yngwie for the win, I saw a few year ago his still have the touch, he know how play perfect concert was super good, but him is ass...., on that concert the drummer, the keyboard player and the bass guitar was in one corner hide, and we a not talking of a small stage not was on a venue of 5000 people, but still he one of the best guitar player of the worlds,. When I saw the Unlucky Morpheus 1 week ago, I say si really good cover super technic, and excellent execution, but have something don't have the Yngwie version. Talking about Yngwie hi totally Paganini but because of the influence of Jens when they play together on 80's was a combination between Paganini and Bach, Jens say look Back is better Yngwie say but look Paganini is faster: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fat-tJSolLzLk8Y.html in General without this 2 current power metal will not the same. Still prefer Far Beyond The Sun live on Leningrad with Anders Johansson on the drums. Also the name of the first album was Rising Force, also was the name of the band Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force. If you want something more with Yngwie and Jens they have also solo album of Johansson Brothers All Opposable Thumbs kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2yZmpuGY9TLiJc.html this is more Bach style.

Typically in metal, anyway. "Rock music and rock and roll bands typically use electric guitar for the high range, and thus deploy violin only exceptionally. Nevertheless, some rock musicians have experimented with violin in a rock setting as either part of the backup (such as Paul McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby") or as a dual lead instrument sharing the spotlight, or alternating, with lead guitar. Violin as the featured lead instrument in the rock genre is a rarity and is more frequently associated with regional bands." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_violin -Michael

Their version reminds me of Yanni live at the Apocrolis. It literally sounds like something Yanni would have played check it out yourself if you don't believe what I'm saying. Yngwie is still the best version.
