This video demonstrates how to do the YMCA Cycle Ergometer test. It is a submaximal exercise test designed to estimate the VO2max for clients aged 15-69 years old. It uses 3 or more consecutive 3-minute workloads designed to raise the heart rate between 110bpm and 85% of maximum heart rate for two consecutive workloads.
Remember to incorporate an appropriate warm-up
Review the CSEP Aerobic Fitness Test Termination Criteria before testing
Always complete the test with an active recovery procedure
These CSEP guidelines are under constant revision - If you notice any mistakes or out-of-date information, please let me know in the comments so I can update the video accordingly.

At 2 minutes and 16 seconds, you will notice that the underlined cell in the second column has the wrong WATTS figure - it should be 125W and not 100W.

Hi Miritana. It is difficult to say which is 'better' since it depends on the purpose. Both tests are indirect predictions of VO2max. The gold standard measurement of VO2max (maximal oxygen consumption) is a direct maximal treadmill test using a metabolic cart. These tests attempt to predict those results. The preferred test will depend on which is more feasible to administer. For example the 20 meter shuttle run (beep test) makes more sense if you are testing a large group of people at once. Current literature shows that both tests have a correlation coefficient of around 0.86, but the most important thing is to ensure that results using different predictive tests are not compared to each other! Thanks for your comment!
