    +Axe Avier He means that he empathised with the situation of these old men, even though they (well, at least Francis) demonstrate sociopathy, not that sociopaths will be touched. Anyway, I'm not even sure sociopaths don't feel anything; I once read they do, different prom psychos, who are basically robots, they are just extremely geared towards doing anything to achieve what they desire.

  • @Mixxathon

    @Mixxathon

    8 жыл бұрын

    It definitely has a serious core, and that makes it even more awesome. You take your wife for granted, as a man you might forget what positive influence she has on you. Then one day she is gone forever and with no one to rein you in, you go haywire. There is an empty wifeshaped void that you fill with whatever makes your numbed senses come alive. You throw rocks, you shoot horses, because anything less would mean nothing in your grayed out lonely world. In the end, all it boils down to is that you might have a friend, who is as broken as you perhaps, who has a hat. All we can ever hope for is a friend that we tolerate, and more importantly seems to tolerate us, brokenness and all. Then all is ok. '.... don't you worry 'bout me now. I'm doing just fine on my own.' No, you are not! But with a friend you just might.

    This is by far their best song. The lyrics, melody, cinematography, acting... they all meddle in a beautifully fun, yet melancholic song, which perfectly embodies the human condition. It's upsetting to see that it's of their lesser known songs, especially when you compare it to "what does the fox says"

    I am 12 my great grandpa passed away a few months ago. His name was francis and he always wore a fedora. As soon as we arrived to the funeral this song immediately came to mind. We played it for his friends and neighbors and his wife and everyone thought it was hilarious. My great grandma listens to it every single day. This song always reminds us of him and how funny he was. Even though this song was made as a joke and I’m commenting this seven years later, it helped lots of people emotionally too. Thank you ❤

    I have to say the acting from the old men in this video is amazing. The looks of thinly-veiled horror on the protagonist's face as Francis's behaviour escalates are absolutely brilliant. Also the part when Francis himself almost breaks but then suddenly snaps out of it and says "I'm bored"... Genius! Though I wouldn't expect anything less from Ole Martin Hafsmo!

    The line "Oh Margaret, oh Margaret, don't you worry 'bout me now. I'm doing just fine on my own." is truly heartbreaking. They are obviously far from fine, they have both just latched on to each other because neither can face their grief or accept their aloneness. Francis being further down the route of distruction, acting as a backwards mentor. You can see the desperation in Francis as he keeps moving from distraction to distraction, because he knows exactly what he is doing, what sort of life he is dooming his new friend to, but he can't face the fact and instead buries it under more and more violent acts, just like all his other feelings. The main old man clings to Francis, gladly letting him fill the fresh void inside him as a new life companion. He sees Francis' evident lost sanity as proof of where he is going himself and therefore won't fight it. His horror at Francis actions are also a misguided assumption, again based on his blind trust in Francis, that only terrible things can cut through his numbness now. He is horrified of what he thinks that means about him, and what he has become. It shows the risks of codependency, for fostering blind trust and loss of autonomy, but also the vulnerability of someone going through grief: How easy it is to latch onto destructive habits, when everything feels numb and meaningless. It's absolutely astounding lyricism and cinematography.

    Simon & Garfunkel's CD-box from 1997 is called "Old Friends". The first line here is "I saw you at the railway station", the first line in "Homeward Bound" is "I'm sitting at the railway station".

    +Quirentia I was just coming back to write that very same thing. Just listened to it ("The Boxer"). This also reminds me a little of a bit that the Smother's Brothers did ages ago. They sang "The Streets of Laredo" on their comedy show and when they were singing "I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy, the last line Tommy Smother's sang was "if you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too". It kind of reminds me of the "and he had a hat, and I had a hat" part. I know it's kind of far fetched, but I've heard speculation that Ylvis may have had some early Smother's Brothers influence also, although I don't think that's been confirmed, by any means.

    i have a theory about this song. i believe that our protagonist had been mentally unstable for most of his life, supressing intense feelings of anger and violence, and his beloved wife was the only thing keeping him sane. after her passing, he finally snapped. see, i think the protagonist suffers from some form of dissociative identity disorder, more commonly known as split personality, and this "francis" is a persona he created as a vehicle for the violent rage that his wife had kept in check, now free to run amok after her passing. Notice how the protagonist and Francis both have hats. The hats are a metaphor. they are symbolic of their psychological connection, that they are truly one and the same. When Francis cries when he strangles the chicken, that is a bit of the protagonist shining through the cracks, coming to his senses, however momentarily, and realizing just how horrible his actions are. Considering how swiftly francis reassumes control, it would seem to our protagonist that he did not even realize it was him crying, not francis, further blurring the lines between the two personalities. Truly a tragic song about a man pushed over the edge by greif.

    Cactusman129 Another thing to help your point is the rock part where the protagonist says not to throw anymore rocks but Francis does anyway yet the protagonist continues to follow. Also the horses being set free would seem to be great contrast to rock tossing but it, like everything else, goes bleak yet the protagonist follows anyway, almost as though he is completely powerless.

    4 years after I first saw this, still my favorite song. Is Francis a good guy distracting his new buddy from his wife's recent death, or is he just a sociopath dragging along someone who is all alone? Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing humor, but even if that is the case this is so good.

Just saying, liking and hoping it here won't make it happen. I've done my part, but a comment made hours will disappear in the flood of other people wishing for other things, so find it, like it and make more comments. I made one comment on the old "Elders react to Ylvis - The Fox"-video too, but I don't think anyone checks that anymore. Ylvis are legitimately incredible artists. Every music video they make shows an incredible understanding of writing, film, and music as artforms across all genres in order to convey their satire. You need to know the rules in order to break them. They combine their knowledge and abilities to create their art, things that reflect/critique/subvert the societal conventions that we take for granted. It's a bummer that humor is not recognized for the immense intelligence to observe, understand, and breakdown to the core what things are, particularly satirical humor. They are fantastic musicians as well, which helps to be able to sing any kind of lyric. It's always so impressive the effort and sophisticated techniques in every single video. There are fascinating concepts in all of them. For the students in university who can design their own classes, Ylvis's music videos would be amazing to analyze, they're chock full of detail to dissect in all of them even if Ylvis themselves would downplay their incredible work, they are incredibly detailed and intentional in every single aspect. Of course, all the music videos are also catchy and enjoyable to watch for everyone who doesn't want to take a deep dive as well. The thing about art is that every individual can take their own meaning and way to enjoy it, even separate from the author's intention. Ylvis rocks across all metrics.

    A good point, Ylvis doesn't get enough credit for their art partly because they themselves downplay what they've made as just some silly songs and such. I think they're incredible.

    I guess why so many people are saying this is sad, is because after watching it so many times, i realized... would it be sad if they were two young people doing the same stuff? i guess its because we interpret it as two old men, who lost everything they had(their wives) and they are trying to feel alive again doing those stuff, throwing rocks, stealing a car, etc... Truly beautiful.
