    The convection + radiation is not to be neglected If there's even a mild air current silver will lose heat quickly! But without it will hold onto it like nothing else

    Thanks for sharing this very interesting video. There seems to be a lot of focus on the chemical properties of different teapot materials, but the thermal properties shouldn’t be ignored! I am curious about a whole lot of experiments now. For example: do you taste the difference with the same teapot, once with and once without insulator below?

    Amazing video, and a great explanation of the differences between these two teapot materials from a thermodynamic standpoint! One thing I sometimes do (and I've seen other people do) with well-aged/traditional storage Sheng Pu'er is having my Yixing pot "swim" in boiling water (with the water being replaced after each steep so it stays as hot as possible). The much lower thermal emissivity of the silver teapot makes me wonder whether it would be a suitable candidate for dry brewing that kind of Sheng (because to be honest, those pot baths are a bit of a mess).

    Very interesting and informative video. I always wanted to get a silver teapot. Unfortunately it is to expensive for me.

    preheated yixing will hold teperature longer than silver teapot even on non thermally conductive surface. because since the yixing has low thermal conductivity the temperature stays inside and dosent readiate outside as much.

    The through-wall conductance is anyway small, as the teapot is thin. The temperature difference between inner and outer wall will be very small in both cases, probably below 1°C for yixing and even lower for Silver. So while the reasoning, in theory, is correct, the effect is negligible. If the teapot was, let's say, a inch thick, than it would be a different story. But for a thickness of a couple of mm, the through-wall conductance is small in both cases.

    Wonderful video and well timed. I just made a purchase of a silver teapot to add to my collection. I have Jian Shui, Chao Zhou, Nixing, Yixing Zini, and Yixing Duanni pots. I am excited to try the silver when it arrives. One question I have that remains is how to care for the silver pot. You do mention removing your leaf and not allowing it to sit after brews. What other than that would you do to maintain it both externally and internally? I expect the silver to tarnish quickly. Is anything done to remove the tarnish?

    I clean the silver teapot after a session and pour hot water in and out, leave the lid off and it dries, if it discolors just rub it with a thick baking soda paste, do it with your fingers, it cleans it perfectly.

    So far from what I understand is when determining which one is better largely is on personal preference.

    Certainly personal preference plays a great role, although there are also objective differences between the two materials.

    I like the idea of a comparison, but it's very hard to follow cause at least few times statements regarding one or another teapot or material were swapped. Also I believe few times statements were incorrect. And last but not least, it's incorrect to compare objects without their difference in masses included in any conclusion.

  • @nannuoshan

    @nannuoshan

    Could you please mentioned which statements you think we're incorrect? If there is something to correct, we better do. But a general comment with substantiate is maybe of little benefit. Concerning masses, we chose pots with similar mass. I though we mentioned it, but might have forgotten. We weighed them ahead of the video.

    silver is the metal that has the greatest conductivity of both electricity and heat. this means it the heat will radiate out of the silver pot faster than the clay pot. the pots being that small probably makes this a total non issue.

  • @gabokuroki

    @gabokuroki

    Hi Mark, thank you for the comment! Indeed silver conducts heat even better than copper and one should take care of using an insulating saucer to avoid loosing heat too fast from the bottom of the pot... moreover the table might get damaged. As far as radiation is concerned, that's not a problem as conductivity is not related to radiation. Silver, especially when glossy, has a fairly low emissivity, so heat lost by radiation is limited. Convection will play the greater role in cooling down the pot, when an insulating saucer is used.
