2023 Prix De Lausanne Candidate Soo Min Kim, Age 18, from Sunhwa Arts High School performs Variation from Paquita at the Youth Grand Prix 2023 Korea Semi-Final, where she won First Place in the Senior Age Division.
Paquita is a romantic ballet in two acts and three scenes choreographed for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1846 by Joseph Mazilier to the music of French composer Edouard Deldevez and Ludwig Minkus. The ballet takes place during the occupation of Napoleon’s army in Spain and tells the story of Paquita, who was abducted by Romani people and doesn't know that she is really of noble birth. Paquita saves French officer Lucien's life from the Spanish government, which had sent the gypsy chief to kill him. They fall in love although their walks of life keep them from being together. Through a series of dramatic events, Paquita comes to learn of her true identity and is able to marry Lucien, who, it turns out, is her cousin.

She has breathtaking balance, and gorgeous arabesques.
Stunning! She must have incredibly strong feet because those shoes look so soft but she seems perfectly stable, giving her great mobility and smooth rolling down.

Absolutely gorgeous arabesques, stage presence and artistry the only thing that kills me is that it seems to be OK nowadays to do a double preparation before pirouette. This is just so maddening to me but I guess they are excepting it now since you are supposed to whip so many out. To me I would love to just see a gorgeous clean double from a single preparation, that double plié kills my eyeballs. This is not the only person doing it, I’m seeing this all over the place now. Anybody that can do a clean double or triple pirouette from a single plié in a real fit position is going to get all the love from me even if they fall on their ass at this point. But there was much to appreciate about this variation it was quite lovely. But for the love of God what is it with the double plies before pirouettes nowadays?
