    Very comprehensive, excellent review. KONG is the obvious, better choice with so many added features, especially Made in USA, better engineering, handles, opening, latches, warranty. However, it is difficult to ignore the ICONIC, classic YETI styling that has an appeal all its own. With that said, I believe the ultimate shootout would be USA MADE coolers: Orca, Cordova, Bison & Kong. Orca has Yeti's styling plus better features, Made in USA, and a much more robust stainless handle on the 20 quart. Cordova has very unique styling, great features and the Cordova Sidekick is the only 20 qt cooler with nylon carry strap. Bison has some good features too. All in all -- there is no need to look beyond the USA for the best rotomolded coolers !

    Kong coolers are the best coolers on the market right now imho. The company that makes Kong used to be the roto mold for yeti before they were outsourced to China, so of course they know how to make a cooler…and better. The thing that sets these Kong coolers apart from other coolers, is the accessories. They can meet the demand for fishing, camping, hunting, and pretty much any outdoor enthusiast.

    Great review and I am considering one. I think for the average person even the "worst" performing roto cooler will satisfy the average consumer. Most folks don't need 5,7,10 days of ice retention. I think that is evident with the popularity of the smaller coolers. I think it comes down to buying something you are confident will last you forever, strong warranty, and price you are comfortable paying.

  • @joerevis

    @joerevis

    I agree with you, the average person doesn’t need that much ice retention, and if ice lasts one day longer, it’s really not a big deal. However it is an area where we can compare coolers with each other. If a person buys the cooler that they personally like best, they will be happy with it! I was going to buy a Yeti when I discovered that there was a cooler manufacturer only 10 miles from my house, that was Kong, so I bought that cooler, and I love them!

  • @jagreddog

    So ive done ton of on hands and online research.Personally i dont need a cooler that goes 7 days ish.But i will say that most of the roto coolers do a great job.Of course price comes into play at some point.So for me i picked the best i can afford with the overall best features.Kong wins hands down.I got the baby 25 and the 50qt recently.All the extras you can use can swap between the 2 coolers--cutting boards -kicker-bottle opener.But as well as one of the top rated for ice retention,Kong wins for me because of 2 things.The latches are epic(not plastic pull down) easy to use and seal great.The handles are perfect to carry -Not rope handles that swing/sway when you carry.Not hating on the YETI because they started this industry( i think??)But you have to make your choice and be happy.Kong for the money is my winner.Just be happy!FYI All roto coolers work best when you pre-chill for atleast 24hrs.Peace!!!

    Being able to open the Kong cooler a bit while it is secured is reason alone to buy it, I'm sure a huge pet peeve of anyone is having to shuffle things around and having to secure it again just to get at something. And maybe its just me, but the lid on the Yeti looks like its got a small bow in it, you can see the corners don't really sit flat.

  • @joerevis

    @joerevis

    5 жыл бұрын

    Spinal2111 Yeti had a big issue with the lids warping in the past. But it can be a real issue for any rotomolded cooler. When you have 150 degree surface temperature in direct sunlight and 36 degree inside ( when it’s full of ice), you will most likely see the lid bow down on the ends. Vice versa if you put hot water on the inside and the outside temperature is cool then it will warp up on the ends. Neutral temperature inside and out it should lay flat. There are design features that help reduce this, and I believe all the cooler companies are putting in an effort to minimize the lid warp issue. When I was at the Kong factory they told me that they have eliminated a lot of warp issues through engineering.

    Why didn't you talk about the cutting board and dividers that Kong offers to go in the cooler. That in itself makes it more worth the investment knowing that I can use dividers to separate the food and then use it as a cutting board/table. That is one of the coolest features and you didn't even mention them. Those indents inside the cooler are for that purpose.

The drain plug hose adapter is great new accessory offered by Kong now too! I think out of all the accessories my favorite is the Bottle Biter! It is the best looking bottle opener out there!

    This is not a fair comparison, as you need to compare the exact same size coolers. Despite his calculations, there is clearly more dead space in the Yeti which means the Yeti is cooling more surface area. The ice rention test delivers as expected for evenly matched construction quality. The Kong SHOULD keep ice longer. And the Kong weighs 3 pounds more even though it is a lower volume cooler likely due to extra build features. They are both outstanding coolers. They both leak when tipped. I would have chosen the Kong over my Otterbox Venture if the Kong were more leak-proof on a tip test. I believe this has to do with the design of the lid hinge which does not allow for compression/sealing of the gasket at the hinge side.

    Good review. However, not everything is factually accurate. KONG's warranty is a LIMITED Lifetime Warranty. As such, the warranty is good for the original purchaser only. Also, "normal" wear and tear is not covered -- and this includes lid warping and sagging (this is listed right on the company's website). Yes, the company actually considers that normal wear and tear, and almost everything regarding KONG's warranty is at the company's discretion (that's how KONG's website reads to me, at least). Also, the hardware (e.g., latches, hinges, etc.) is warranted for five (5) years only. Not part of the Limited lifetime warranty. To the best of my knowledge, only ORCA is made in the USA AND has a "true" lifetime warranty. Yeti, so long as you request it, will always provide the customer with an American-made cooler. For its rotomolded coolers, Yeti has two (2) production facilities in the USA, and one (1) in the Philippines.

    Listen I dislike Yeti so I'm no fanboy but this isn't a 100% fair test. One has 10 quarts more of space in it. The best way to compare coolers is to fill them both up to the brim rather than with the same quantity of ice. One with wasted air will obviously melt ice more faster than the one with less air.

    @champer slimmerthannone narwhal is right. The test is not accurate. This wouldn’t pass science experiment scrutiny actually. To test right both coolers must be filled with ice to the top. Then: q1 = weight of ice in cooler 1 t1 = time to melt in cooler 1 Then calculate the rate of melting per minute: q1/t1 Repeat for cooler 2: q2/t2 The smaller of the two ratios is the winner. For example, if: (q1/t1) Then cooler 1 is the winner.

  • @joerevis

    I explain in the video the difference in size is not as it appears, Yeti exaggerates their size where Kong is a true Qt measurement. The video breaks down several factors that people can consider other than ice retention. The ice retention is so good in both coolers, that will not be the determining factor for most people. I used the coolers I had available that were the closest in size. I would love to repeat the ice test with the Yeti and the Kong 50 and see how much size makes a difference. Thank you for your comment.

    @@joerevis I'm just saying, fair test would've been both coolers toped with ice for avoiding air gaps. with roto molded usually size doesn't matter because most of them have very similar construction design, there is a reason you did ice retention challenge, because it does matter, video was more for advertising kong coolers, and for what I see they are not bad at all price wise and for ice retention, but again i believe test could've been better.
