Yet Another MacArthur Park--1974

This Mac Park was recorded from the audience 39 years ago, so the audio is a bit to be desired. Sill, I think you get the idea. What a wonderful experience it was to be 22 years old and featured by Maynard Ferguson.

While I was on Chase's band, Sandy Sandberg from Holton asked me if I wanted to have dinner with Maynard. Well of course! We met at an Italian restaurant in Chicago. There were 4 people at our table--Maynard, Sandy, another young trumpet player and me. Unknown to me, the other trumpet player and myself were being screened for the job. While we were at the restaurant, Chase walked in with Maynard's trumpet section. What are the odds of that? Hmmm. Anyway, I got the job......

My scholastic background in music is quite limited, while my performance background is far beyond the scope of KZread. Briefly, though, my first big gig was Chase in 1973. I was 21. I then played with Maynard, moved to LA (played with lots of great bands/players), then with Buddy, moved to NY, then Thad/Mel, and moved to Vegas at the end of 1976. I quit playing trumpet in 1993 when live music pretty much vanished in Vegas. I've been a Steadicam op, inventor, day trader, photographer, etc...

Out of all of the MacArthur Park bridges you’ve posted, this in my opinion the best rendition of it, like holy cow you are singing up there!

In a large pot, combine Maynard, Wayne, a few sprinkles of Doc, a dollop of Bud, and a few large portion of Yoda, and what do you have? One of the most gifted trumpet players to ever walk the planet. His name is Lynn Nicholson!

Thanks for posting, Lynn. I think I may like this solo of yours best, of the several versions I have heard. You found some artful, creative ways to make the solo even better while featuring your amazing range, it works very, very well!

Knocks me out! Lynn was playing the lead on that fairly obscure chart "Pocahontas" on the MF3 album roughly at the same time as the above video. He was whacking out all the High B Flats, A's an G's on that chart right along with Maynard in live concert. I knew from that moment that there was something that he was doing that I couldn't do. At least at that time lol.

I listen here in amazement, being a trumpet player that couldn't even come close to what you do. Impressive then, and you're equally impressive today. I am one of the few that had the pleasure of seeing you perform Mac Park live when you were with Maynard at Disneyland back in the 70s. I've heard many great trumpet players on Mac Park, you're still my favorite, and I love the way you change it up just a little each time. Thanks for posting.

Doc was a phenomenal teacher, but as you say, most of my playing apparatus was already pretty strong. Doc did also attempt to help me later when I damaged the vibrating surface here in Las Vegas..... Great man... RIP Doc.
