So, that's what you guys did while I was riding in Deland and Titusville area. I'm actually pretty happy that I decided not to come to that ride because there's no way my 35mm tires would handle those sandy roads in the beginning but I definitely wanna check out the Old Dixie highway at some point, so cool!! Great job with putting this all together. Now I feel like wanna go another bike tour. Great Adventure!! A cool wild pig family sighting, she didn't even care about you guys. Half way to nowhere sign was original 😅

yeah, we did some pretty long "walks on the beach" the first day but it sort of settled down after that. The backroads were pretty awesome and, yes, the Dixie Highway was a great find. Hey Bryan, Just finished viewing this great adventure. Really beautiful and rugged Florida landscapes. The term 'Coast to Coast' doesn't always apply, does it? Walking your bikes through sand isn't really coasting is it? 😅 I couldn't help but think of the damage done to chains, chain wheels, and sprockets even after cleaning your drive train every night. This kind of riding is really for single speed balloon tire beach bombers... given how flat and sandy it is. I loved the views of this kind of terrain, but the price of admission can be rough at times. Gord

absolutely. it's higher on the "adventure" scale for sure. I could hear the grit in my drivetrain which I didn't like very much. I tried to hose it off the best I could.

@@RideAlongAdventures Bryan, Now that you are back home, I assume you completely and thoroughly cleaned and lubed both the chain, chain wheel, and sprocket set. After getting all the grit and dirt out, go over to a good bicycle shop and have the tech inspect and measure for wear and give you an update. There will come a time when you will need to replace both the chain, the sprocket, and chain wheel because of excessive wear. When you replace all those things, your shifter should work like new. In the mean time keep the joints on the derailleur clean and lubed regularly. If you've done allot of dirt and sand miles, it might be worth replacing the derailleur as well. They're only around $20+. Then you will have the same as a brand new bike.... Yuge difference in performance and satisfaction. 🙂🙂🙂 Yesterday I went out for a 21 mile ride and my butt didn't hurt a bit. Also, I didn't need to shift down into 2nd or 1st. My legs were strong enough in 3rd to pump up all the inclines. Great news for my conditioning... 😊😊😊 Gord

Yup. All good advice. I do a fairly extensive tune up every spring. New chain, new cables, new tires. I’m fortunate to have a super bike shop nearby. Glad your body is adjusting well! Keep up the training!

@@RideAlongAdventures Thanks Bryan. Indeed, I will be keeping up the training... as I switch from hiking to biking. Keep in mind that both the chain and the teeth that mesh with the chain, both wear out. Replacing the chain only does about 50% of the fix. For every third chain (every other new chain), I personally would consider new teeth. Old teeth will only cause the chain to wear prematurely. And neither will work as originally designed. But if you are happy with the results... Of course, it still works... even if a little rougher. But if you crave that new bike feel... then the complete fix is the answer. 😊 Gord

Another great RA! Just moved from Florida where I lived across the street from the Pinellas Trail back to the Finger Lakes of NYS. Takes some getting used to riding along with traffic. I don’t much like it, country roads are fine, but I don’t know how you deal with high speed roadways. Thanks for sharing and we all look forward to your next adventure!

Yeah, it’s an adjustment. I prefer off-road. This is why I gravitate to rail trails. BUT riding on roads is a fact of life. I’m being overly simple here but I think it just requires extra vigilance and attention. I’m watching in my mirrors, I’m constantly looking at the eyes of oncoming drivers. Yeah, it’s scary when I see them looking down at devices or otherwise distracted. No doubt about it: it’s dangerous and risky so you have to raise your own level of attention. When I plan routes, I look for big shoulders and I ride in non rush hour traffic. Whenever possible. I gotta get up to the Finger Lakes! I’ve heard nothing but awesome feedback on that area. I think I’d contact a local bike shop for a shuttle to St. Augustine. Florida traffic is awful. Great video. I enjoy trains. US definitely could be more bike friendly. We’re trying. All the wonderful bike trails being planned is a start.

It was definitely heavy in some places. Always good to be careful.

It's interesting to see that stretch of Dixie Highway. It's a lot older looking than I expected. There are a few segments further south that are still active as 2 lane, paved roads. I know of 3 between Valkaria and Fort Pierce. They are useful if you want to get a break from the traffic along US-1.

Interesting! I came across a website awhile back that showed active vs inactive sections all the way north-south. Those brick sections were really cool.

finally got to watch the whole thing. Great video, so so different from SE Florida, which is the only area of the state I've really seen and which I'm......not a big fan of. Kevin got a lot of advice (and I think purchased maps) from Karlos. And we followed a good bit of it except when we encountered a lot of sand or were fearful of no trespassing signs. @@SingletrackSamuraiyes, that was the part from St Augustine, where we were trying to get off US 1. One area was clearly no trespassing so we went a little further south. We ended up on the north end of the Old Brick road. There were some other areas that we modified “on the fly” for various reasons also.

Love it would like a map of YOUr trip so that me n my guy can do the trip as well, it looks epic😅

Bryan, this is the second time that I road this with you. It is always goog to get on my stationary when I can't get out on my bike. I knew that you came back to finish your ride from Ft. I was wondering if you had any new rides since the Flordia Coast to Coast from St. Augustine. There is suspose to be a trail from St road 207 to Platka Florida, to Keystone Heights and they are now connecting it to Lake Butler Fl.. I see where Thomas is tearing it up, going to different places each week.

Great stuff Bryan , very entertaining videos. Water bottles are so easy to lose, usually at a cafe and wandering more as you get older is a good thing, so long as you remember where home is. Wondering if you had editing experience in a previous job?

Thanks, Amy. I’ve done a roomette before. Yes, FAR more comfortable but you also miss out on the many characters you meet along the way. I’m with you on driving. It’s slightly more expensive but more flexible. However, sleeping on the train is also cool. Thanks for watching. Not sure what’s next actually. Maybe some shorter trails and then a big summer adventure. I need to nail it down at some point soon.

lol. 😂 the most cicada filled day I ever experienced was a few years ago on the Ohio to Erie Trail. (kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5aXmdtydbTIiMo.htmlsi=SgGGo7x2AbMjvYEc) at the 3:09:00 mark. They were everywhere but they sort of kept their distance except for the occasional tag along for the ride. They’re ugly creatures but I think you just get used to them. And then they’re just endearing little guys who have their brief moment of life before quickly disappearing for another X years.

Somehow, someway I've been unable to find your review of the Brooks saddle that you purchased. Did you like it or hate it? Still mulling over my favorite things about the 70's. The music was definitely one of the best things to be sure.

Hi, Steve. I don't think I did a full review but I can do a quick one. In short, I love it. It has been fantastic and super comfortable. It takes about 300 miles to condition it and for it to sort of mold to your sit bones, etc. But after that, it's great. One thing is to be sure to apply something like mink oil regularly. I do it every time I wash the bike (both top and underside). 70s music was awesome. :)

Thanks, man. I try to be. For sand, it's really a tough call. I've ridden my fat bike (4.5") tires through all sorts of muck but, well...sand is sand. Kevin had wider tires and the sand still managed to make him fish tail in the back. Now, if it's wet, that's a different story but dry, deep sand is just a whole different beast. Stay tuned because I'm thinking of trying to organize some sort of group ride at some point. Maybe a summer tour somewhere. It's been my experience that bike touring folks are generally very cool people, friendly, positive attitude, etc. I keep waiting to meet a total jerk some time...hasn't happened yet. :)

Talk about off of the beaten path! Interesting video and your shared thoughts. Thanks also for your logistics info. However, I have a question about that. Where you able to catch a train out of Tampa or did you have to ride a bus to another station? I checked trains from Tampa to Washington DC and it seemed like you have to take a bus. We moved to SWFL last summer and have been looking ways to take Amtrak, but without the 4-hour drive to Orlando. Thanks again.

Sure, I caught the train at Union station in Tampa and went straight through to Wilmington, De. No bus. It's a nice station as well. Seems like an old building tucked away in big development. Also, Starbucks around the corner. Jealous about your move :) Before the hurricane, we went to Sanibel every summer for about 20 years. We might get back this year. Anyway...enjoy the area!

For some reason when I enter the entire route it shows mixed services, but when I enter Tampa to Orlando it shows the Silver Star train. 👍

lol...this is a funny topic because I've sort of experimented over the years and I don't really know what I prefer. I used to clip in (spd) but that meant carrying another pair of casual shoes. Then I went with flat pedals. I use Merrill Moab hiking shoes which I really like for comfort as well. But I still don't want to wear them all the time so I generally bring a casual pair of lightweight slip-ons (aka old man shoes), especially for use if I'm on Amtrak. the Merrills definitely stink after a long ride and they also take up a lot of room in my bags. long answer to say I haven't totally figured out what works best yet. I noticed several other riders who use clip-in sandals during warm months. That might be worth a try as well.

Thanks for another great adventure. How did Kevin and you come up with that route? I thought you would have seen Thomas? Maybe the Huracan is in your adventurous future (see Ryan Van Duzer’a recent videos). Again thank you for the efforts.

This route was purchased from The Singletrack Samuri on his website (see in Bryan’s info) Since we started in a different location we had to do some modifications to the start. We also modified in some areas to avoid possible sandy areas and/or to get to a certain destinations (lunch, lodging, etc).

I know this might sound crazy but, no, I just don’t flat. Yes, I ride tubeless and I’m a big fan. Prior to that I used those slime tubes which were also useful. I’ve been sort of lucky in that way. However, since you asked (probably more than you wanted to know), I had some burp of sealant all over my rear rack during the first day of this trip. I still know what happened. Perhaps my stem was loose (?). I recall hitting one fairly significant bump that actually threw a water bottle into busy traffic. But I’ve looked at the video and the sealant mess didn’t happen until later in the ride. So, no clue. I had one tubeless flat during last fall’s Ohio to Erie trip but that was because I didn’t know you needed to top off the sealant every so often. Valuable lesson. It was bone dry and just “disintegrated.” Fortunately, aliens helped me that day. (See video 😂 - that was some serious special effects for my limited video abilities; about 1:49:30 kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXWsz8OTlc26m8Y.htmlsi=YY2KdTJjvDme0mx-) I had some fairly significant punctures on the Montour Trail (well, getting to the Montour Trail, actually). But they sealed up before I could even use the plug tool. I only pumped the tire back up and all was well again. I think one reason is that I don’t push it on worn tires. I replace them almost annually which is usually when the rear tire is usually done for anyway. Long answer. Sorry. Thanks for watching.

I ride a 2019 Trek Checkpoint ALR5. Good solid ride that handles gravel, road, dirt, sand, creeks, swamps. I really enjoy it. I toured for several years on a 2000 Cannondale R1000. Nice bike but not for trails. My other touring bike is a Trek Farley with 4.5" wheels but i don't take that one out as often...that's mostly for mountain bike trails. Thanks for watching.
