    Yup..... Just think of it...the worst thing we had back in the 2000's was a president getting a BJ.....now a slow news day , is day where the presidents does not do anything wrong, there is no racist, mass killings or terrorist attacks. Like sexual assault, a horrible accident seems not as controversial as the rest :S:S:S

    Aussie here. Need to correct one thing sadly. While it is voluntary to vote, the vote is only none binding in the Yes option. The No option is a binding result. Yes that's right, the Yes vote means nothing but the No vote becomes law. Not only that, there has been a number of things added to the rules regarding it that would make your vote invalid. These can include anything in the envelope other than the vote, anything on the vote other than a mark in the space provided will have it made invalid. On top of that, police are being rolled out in force to make sure that groups do not tamper with envelopes and damaging postal locations. We have groups, some being funded by members of parliment, that are putting out false information, or giving out little packets of glitter telling people to put it in the envelope to show their support. We have even had some people making it clear that anyone who openly votes Yes, will be targeted. And again on top of that, the vetting proccess for counting the votes has not been enacted. What this means is that anyone at all is able to count the votes. While normally this is not a problem, because there is no vetting, there is also no legal ramifications if someone was to tamper with the counting. Sadly this is what the plebiscite has become.

    *the Jay* Sure, they can say that all they want, but history proves which method was the most successful at bringing legitimate, effective socio-cultural and governmental changes during those years, and it was NOT the militant/violent extremist groups. In fact, there is quite a deal of evidence to suggest that the militant/extremist portions of the activists were _detrimental_ to their causes, delaying the changes they sought rather than encouraging them to happen. IDGAF what they stand around bitching about MLK, because ultimately it was the actions of him, and people like Rosa Parks and the (many) protesters who did their work peacefully, stirring the minds and hearts of nations making them feel and think, that effected the changes we have today (such as they are).

    Just FYI- The original mandatory plebiscite was not a postal 'vote', it was an actual 'vote' at the polls. When they tried once a year ago and again now to get that through parliament and failed, they switched to a non-mandatory postal survey, which they could pass without parliamentary approval.

    The Taylor Swift things makes sense. I don't care about Australian politics. I don't find the Trump retweet of Chicago as dismissive of Charlottesville. He addressed Charlottesville, but I think its on point to address where is the media when something larger is happening elsewhere. Proving that the liberal media only focuses on its agenda and not larger stories happening at the same time. Pizza gate has been easily proved as true, but liberal media wants to drop it and youtube keeps deleting videos that prove its true. I think you're right on calling out Vanguard people as racist. Agree to call things out that are extreme on either side. In good news, the people who tore down the statue have been arrested. Thanks for doing these videos Phil.

    I was taught one thing while growing up, that I feel like many have been forgetting lately: I don't have to agree with what you're saying, but I will fight for your right to say it. Do I agree with the alt-right and what they're for? No, I don't. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to PEACEFULLY assemble to voice their opinion. Why? Because as soon as we remove someone's ability to voice their opinion, then we're limiting everyone's right to free speech. And that's not okay. Do I think the left had a right to PEACEFULLY assemble and counter protest? I do. But notice that I keep saying PEACEFULLY. Because any group of people should be able to assemble without fear of violence. That said, hate symbols are hate symbols, and have no place at a public rally, because they're essentially designed to incite violence.

    I am so baffled about that a nation like Australia can be debating same sex marriage. Im shocked that this is even up to debate, love is love and wether you're a man loving another man, a woman loving another woman, or a man and a woman loving each other, love is love and everyone should be able to marry the person they love as long as it's two consensual adults obvious. Im so thankful to be living in Denmark, a country who's been celebrating same sex marriage for many years, in fact we are in the middle of our pride week in Copenhagen at this very moment.

  • @wallacewallaby5782
    @wallacewallaby57826 жыл бұрын

    Marriage equality was outlawed in Australia in 2004 by conservative ex PM John Howard WITHOUT a vote. WRT this vote, many conservative politicians have said they would always vote no, even if it means voting against what the electorate wants.

  • @jaynesteele99
    @jaynesteele996 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for talking about the same sex marriage debate in Australia. Just to make you aware, another reason why it's a controversial method is Malcolm Turnbull has in the past opposed postal votes because in his own words : "The voluntary postal voting method ... flies in the face of Australian democratic values," he wrote in a 1997 article for The Australian "It is likely to ensure that not only will a minority of Australians vote, but also that large sections of the community will be disfranchised." There is also the key issue that it is a non binding vote and even if the public decide yes/no it is still up to parliamentary discretion whether same sex marriage will become legal or not. It is frustrating I know for many Australians that we are spending $122 million just to end up back in the same place as if there was no postal vote, a vote in parliament. There is some hope though for the yes campaign, being a young Australian myself I know there has been a huge push on social media and on Uni campuses to register to vote. Hopefully despite what method is used love will in the end win.

    Voluntary voting is going to be biased, one way or the other people who feel the strongest are going to vote. A mandatory vote is the only way to get a clear picture of the populations actual feelings on an issue.

    I agree. Hopefully this plebiscite gets a strong turnout and a strong yes vote. Tony Abbott and the other conservatives championing the no campaign for all these years use doubt as a weapon - they perpetuate doubt that Australians want marriage equality to forestall legislation. We need to banish that doubt, and if they're going to force us to have a postal plebiscite, it's the best opportunity they've provided us with so far.

She will benefit greatly from claiming this shit, she got incredible amounts of media attention from it. She says she will donate to assault victims - in other words, females. Not males. There is not a single group dedicated to helping male victims in america. She could have brought up important issues, but instead, it seemed like a stunt to benefit her at the cost of a mans life.

    When i found out that people were taking down statues it pissed me off. I mean i understand why some people can believe it to be racist to have statues of people from the confederate army stand as a monument. They are the same people that need to go back to school and re take US History. These statues are up because they are figures who made an impact in our history. Regardless of what side they fought for. Their way of thinking may have not been favorable but the fact that they strongly fought for what they believe in is what America is about. Just a few weeks ago the statue of Robert E. Lee was taken down, it saddened me. I remember learning about him and other members of the confederate army in school. We were taught that even though they were on the confederate side they had amazing battle tactics that we still use in our military today. We learn from our history is my point. Yes we, (we as in the America) have had a very screwed up and bloody past. That is still no reason to sweep it under the rug and try to erase it because a few people find it racist. Again i ask these people to return to school and retake US History. Understanding our History is how we as the human race learn and evolve from what we once were to become something better tomorrow. Without that history we are doomed to repeat our errors and eventually destroy ourselves.

    If Taylor really wanted to help sexual assault victims, she would've gone for an actual amount, not a dollar. Going through a civil suit for one dollar is pointless. I know she meant it as a symbolic suit, but it's a waste. Either file a criminal suit (AKA actually get law enforcement to charge him with the crime you're accusing him of, rather than suing him) or go through with the civil case, but for a good chunk of change. Use the money you win to fund / start a charity for sexual assault victims. Make the man you say is an assaulter spend his money helping assault victims. That's a lot closer to the poetic justice she wanted from the $1.00.

    The problem with the 2017 conservative is that there is really no platform anymore, its just 'this issue may be bad, *but* that issue is just as bad, or worse. Take any issue. Trump is bad but Hillary is worse. Nazis are bad but Antifa is worse. Alt-Right is bad (say some) but BLM is worse. (Makes literally no sense comparing a supremacist hate group to a movement). This is just deflecting the point of the original issue to support your own claims. So how about you comment with some sense, and support your claim with evidence instead of deflecting, or insulting the other party. Oh right, but if that was to happen, we would see your true side.

    2017 baffles me. Before 2016 saying Nazis are terrible didn't seem like a political move. Back in the good ol' days you could say "some crazy neo-Nazi went off the rails and committed a crime" and the overwhelming general reaction would be "oh my goodness, that's terrible"! We recently had a local "Rally of Unity" in light of the events in Charlottesville; while I was on my way from the library to the grocery store, a man stopped me to ask what was happening over there. So I explained to him what happened over the weekend, and it felt weird that internally I was bracing myself for a reaction. Because I had said "a white supremacist rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters", I feared that he would suddenly get defensive of the neo-Nazis. Luckily he didn't. He had no idea of what had happened at all. I almost miss the days of being able to be blissfully ignorant of every screw-up in the world.

    As a adolescent (16-year-old) in Australia, the most annoying thing about the postal marriage vote (other than same sex marriage not being a thing in Australia) is on the electoral website they vaguely lead to sixteen and seventeen-year-olds allowed to vote in the postal marriage vote. In Australia, you are allowed to enrol to vote once you are sixteen or seventeen. As stated on the website you needed to enrol before 24th August. If sixteen and seventeen-year-olds who are able to enrol to vote before they are eighteen, they are mature enough they can vote in the postal marriage vote. This vote is for the youth generation, but they are going to take on the opinions of the older generation, this doesn't affect them, this affects the youth of Australia. This determines the future for younger LGBTI+ children and adolescence. I hope the population says yes. Something help Australia.

    I'm not one to comment but I am Australian. My best friend is gay. She has found the love of her life but cannot get married so I have a lot of feelings around this issue. I want marriage equality for her but this is the worst way it could happen. A) its optional and B) if we get a no they say it's off the table and even if we get a yes they get a free vote. I do not believe politicians should be allowed free votes. They are not voting as themselves, they are representing us. They should vote the way their constituents want them too. The majority of Australians believe in marriage equality but all the past times parliament has had a free vote they have voted no because it goes against their personal beliefs. Its rubbish. They are suppose to be our voice. This is a democracy. Their personal feelings shouldn't impact a vote of this magnitude.

    I will never forget the day we legalised same sex marriage in Ireland. I woke up to chaos on the streets! cars on fire! The euro exchange rate plummeted. People were stocking up on food and getting ready to ration it!.... Actually no... Life just carried on. Actually Ireland became a happier better because of it, getting one step closer to equality. Its only going to be another 100 years before the next step....

    The slippery slope argument is so dumb for specifically the reasons of "oh next its legalize beastiality, pedophilia, and marrying your car". On all three of these points you deal with animals, children, and objects that cannot CONSENT. Unless either a parent or guardians permission, someone who is under 18 years old cannot legally consent to marriage. Animals do not have that capacity and objects can't even think let alone speak. You can't marry something or someone that isn't consenting.

    You can marry video games in Japan. Objects don't have emotions/feelings/awareness so consent isn't an issue. It's like saying you shouldn't be able to punch a punching bag because it can't say yes. The issue of consent is also wildly misconstrued. I'd say consent laws and a legal age for consuming alcohol/drugs is more of a revocation of freedoms than an effective means of protecting people, but laws aren't based on science so...

    Im my opinion, i believe When Trump retweets something, he isn’t looking through that persons online history and nor does he care about it. If he sees something he likes, he’ll repost it. All because the guy was a troll in general, he said the truth with Detroit. Its not like trump praised him. I wish the media would stop looking at the whole thing and just focus on the argument on hand.

    DB Pixels But this is *retweeting* and you can see the identity of who first posted it. As President, he has the audience to pretty much guarantee that the country sees who posted the thing first, so it would be logical to assume that the President wants others to look into the idea he was posting along with the person who first posted it because that information is included with the information on what idea he likes. Retweeting something is like saying "I like this idea *that this person came up with* and I want to share it with you all." Now, if Trump had denounced the person before or after he retweeted it, that would be another story.

    Well, this is a tricky one. There is free speech of course, however leaving an option like this where groups of people could spread bullshit as such within ignorant and/or under educated masses and altering their view points, warping their perception of reality and thus making them easier to manipulate under whatever agenda is rather dangerous. Free speech is fine and dandy, leaving options like this and allowing reality to be twisted however sounds quite irresponsible in my opinion

    I'm Australian, the bullshit around the marriage equality vote is so fucking frustrating. They blocked the mandatory vote because they would HAVE to change the law when the YES vote won. Hiding behind the excuse of "oh but what if they say no, we'll have to keep the law. We're trying to protect you." It's bullshit. Now when the YES vote goes through, they can back pedal and still not change the law.

  • @ms94

    @ms94

    RedVelvetRabbit yeah I completely agree. The government is trying to delay this issue because, although there has been pressure from same sex marriage supporters, the ALP, Greens and other parties, the media and even members from within the Coalition themselves to legalise gay marriage and preferably through a free vote in Parliament, the Coalition won't do that because several powerful groups within the Coalition - ie. the conservative branch of the parties - are trying to silence and deny the issue at hand because of their opposition to the concept of gay marriage, and that the Prime Minister, although he is a supporter of gay marriage, is pandering to that conservative base of his party so that he can hold on to his job. And another thing, an earlier comment that I viewed on this video mentioned that the strategy that the conservatives of the Coalition are using to maintain the status quo is that they are using the postal vote, which is troubling because the postal vote is going to be geared towards the older generations, which is more likely to vote 'No' and being fairly exclusive towards the younger generations which are more likely to vote 'Yes', and even then I can poke holes into this by saying that many same sex marriage supporters might not agree with this move from the government because of what Philip mentioned about the legality of this vote and the bigotry that might come out of this, and also that studies/surveys have shown that there is a majority support across every generational group towards gay marriage, including the older generations, which might make the result a lot less predictable than it should have been. By the way, I'm voting 'Yes' to it. I have been a supporter of same sex marriage for years now. I think that it's time for us to move forward and I'm quite embarrassed in my country already for still not legalising gay marriage when every other Western country, even the US which is usually more conservative than Australia and that Australia usually leads on progressive issues over them, has legalised it. I'm also tired of it being used as a political football and tired of waiting and waiting for this important progressive policy to be passed by the Government and to be implemented to make our country a better place for all citizens.
