Yeovil Snow Scenes 1978

Yeovil Snow Scenes - February 1978.
I recently digitized some old 16mm Ektachrome motion picture film I'd taken 40 years ago when the town came to a grinding halt following two successive days of heavy snow. I would have taken more footage were it not for having to clear the wind-driven snow from inside my attic ! Enjoy.

Incredible footage. Forward thinking ti film this at the time. The irony of the paper saying "Town became a refugee camp". 44 years later it looks like it again.
Thats amazing to see the town 40 years ago. I was only born in 83 and start living in Yeo back in 2007. great video well done Martin
I lived in Dorset at the time and can remember it being that deep in the morning I couldn't find my dustbin.
Lived in Fairmead Road at the time, what a brilliant time to be 8 years old!
That's what I call snow. Proper stuff.
What a wonderful video. This was 2 years before I was born. Your Highfield clip is actually the top end of Hillcrest Road. My mum currently lives to the left of the person filming.

Hi C, thank you for the info - good to know there are folks around who recognise the places in the film! Best regards. Bud

@pennyarcade2 I recognise them all. I was born 80 and lived up Montrose Road, then moved to Highfield Rd. The areas in the clip were my playground
Remember it well as I was 33 at the time. Had set off from Amesbury by car (Mk 3 Cortina) that day aiming for West Coker. The snow fall got heavier and heavier as we got further into Somerset. Was very worried that we might get trapped in the car but we just made it to West Coker. That night the Royal George did a roaring after hours trade as the A30 around the village was completely blocked in both directions. Next day the local dairy farmer came round on his tractor selling milk from the churns. I think the A30 was blocked for a couple days after. We then dug our way out to the A30 and back off home.

Go for it Paul. Send me a pic of it when you're done.
Thank you… I can’t wait to show my dad this
My Dad filmed stuff around our home in Langport. Was an awesome time. Wish we'd taken more footage and pictures! I was only 8. Look at all those people out and about - not a mobile phone in sight!
Thank you for this! I remember this winter really well! We had about 4-5 feet of snow in Martock :) someone had to dig out our front door - I was 7 and had a whale of a time playing in the snow while the school was closed.
I remember this vividly.we lived in Hillgrove Avenue, and I was going to take the bus down Forest Hill. My dad walked me to the bus stop, and holding his hand I disappeared in a snow drift upto my hat. I remember looking down the first bump of Forest Hill and wondering why the buses were not getting closer. I was five mind...
I was 25 years old and worked for the GPO telephones - or were we the Post Office Telephones by then? Anyway, we walked everywhere, towing our tools on the ladder which was used as our sledge. Great days!
Hey it's mowing now and I'm in 2018

A nation widr thing now maate
My dad was 5 when that happened and lived on Rosebery Ave at the time.
