Yellowstone: When will it explode? Anatomy of a Supervolcano
Beneath Yellowstone National Park is one of the most powerful forces on the planet: the world's second largest active supervolcano. With the capacity to devastate the ecosystem of the entire planet, when can we expect this behemoth to explode again? Will it be in our lifetimes? And what are the geological processes that permitted its formation in the first place?

Wow. Hi from an italian geologist who loves to hear you speak latin and describe volcanoes 😊
You are literally making videos about my two favourite topics. I love so much geography and linguistics!

This is geology. Luke is a geologist. I very much agree with you, though. Geology and linguistics are my two favorite topics. Which is why I study geology and I'm minoring in Latin!
I'm taking a physical geology course currently and I love that I am now able to understand the geologic activities you describe in this video. Geology rocks!

It rocks indeed!
I love this awesome diversity in the topic of your videos, at one point you're learning about the evolution of Latin, next you're learning about geography.

I see you waving dude at 7:26! I see you!
Volcanoes are always a welcome addition to your polymathic videos! They are indeed very fascinating natural phenomena. Frightening and unsettling, yes, but fascinating all the same.
Gratias, Luci.
I was reading this article about the eruption of mount Tambora that took place in 1815 . The ash clouds formed by the ejecta lasted so long that more than a dozen regions in the northern hemisphere were recorded to have experienced a summerless year. I then proceeded to find more info about active volcanoes that could cause cataclysmic damage to our planet, which is where I learned that Yellowstone is one of them. I have since wanted to learn more about this and I feel surprised when I found out that my favorite youtuber serendipitously decided to make a video about the same topic I've been pondering upon for days. Nice work sir!

What a great coincidence! Please share the video if you liked it; I’m hoping to grow my audience into one that appreciates these topics.
I love Supervolcanoes
So many familiar diagrams! I just got done putting many of those in the volcanism lecture slides for my college students 🌋
Thanks!🎉
Amazing video!

Tuesday.
It will explode when Marvin finally tests his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator.
Don't forget the historic super volcano at Campo Flegrei, home to Pliny (the elder or younger, I don't remember).
What’s more a wonder to behold? Yellowstone or Luke?
I spent 3 summers living on top of this superbomb before the wolves were reintroduced, along with the smell of sulfur 🌋
Thank you! Syncretism, didn't know the use of the word in this sense 😀 my problem is that when analysing a sentence in Latin, it is problematic (for me, I took two years of Latin in high school) to discern when a word is in nominative or other case. I suppose that practice solves everything. That is one of the reasons I learned Esperanto, is more regular. And why "Latino Sine Flexione de Peano " looks so attractive. I'm thinking of learning Italian and to try to read Latin a bit. Cheers
The KZread channel Soup Emporium (who is also a geologist) has a wonderful video on why no one should be worried about an imminent Yellowstone Eruption. I highly recommend that video (and the channel in general). That video also covers why the term "supervolcano" is kind of not a great term to use to describe any volcanic system.
When are you going to visit the Phlegraean Fields supervolcano in Italy? Unfortunately, it has been shaking a lot recently. You can go to Puteoli, there you can speak both Latin and ancient Greek to people!
it would be interesting making a video of the history of greek and roman alphabets. I don't know for example how exactly the greek alphabet ended up influencing the roman alphabet. Etruscans may be involed too. in the video you can add historical facts like the addiction of certain letters in the roman alphabet later on (for example the letter G, U...). maybe you can talk of the role of greek letters in latin (I know for example, romans used "K" as shortening for Kalendae). the two cultures were very much connected so I think there are other thing I missed.
I like your nature videos. I suppose in materials like these you use more 'latin/greek' words than 'germanic/others' words :)
Aiutooooo! 🌋

Luke, or anyone who knows, you referenced the volcanic deposits in the Gulf of Mexico. Is the accepted idea that they were deposited there by the blast directly, or could they have been carried down the Mississippi river and deposited on the floor of the gulf that way?
Flavumlapis super volcano? 😉 Next, how about the Campo Flegrei, the dangers of which local authorities downplayed for decades? Super volcano right beside Naples. 🌋 🇮🇹 💥
Quick question, any idea why Latin uses the same ending for different cars? V.g. 1 declension nominative plural "ae" is the same as the genitive singular "ae" . This always have bug me. Cheers

They have different origins, but they have merged into the same ending, called syncretism. We have the same thing in English: the cats (nominative plural), the cat’s (genitive singular)

Hello! Commented here multiple times, I'm Greek myself, interested about the pronunciation of ancient Greek, and I'm wondering: could you visit Greece in the near future and test out if Greeks can understand ancient Greek? In both the modern and the ancient pronunciation?

Cant we vent some of that pressure, like slowly unscrewing a soda bottle to release the pressure.
@polyMATHY_Luke
2 ай бұрын
That’s a very interesting idea. In fact, when pressure is partially released, this causes a chain reaction where more gas bubbles are suddenly dissolved from the magma, causing the melt to expand, releasing more gas that forces the eventually explosion. This is very much like the soda bottle: at the moment it’s already been shaken, but the lid is still on tight. As soon as you open the lid, there is an explosion, no matter how slowly you try to release it (which would require enormous forces on our part, very much beyond our technological ability, to press down on the earth to prevent it from rupturing).
@roxas3071

What about poking a few small holes into it it small enough to vent the gas but not get the magma flowing.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, can you translate the Septuagint LXX? It’s in Ancient Greek and I can’t find any translators. If you can’t do this can you recommend an Ancient Greek translator?
2 Peter 2:6 και πολεις Σοδομων και Γομορρας τεφρωσας καταστροφῃ κατεκρινεν - though the archeological evidence indicates that that was not a volcanic eruption, but a meteor explosion like Tunguska or Chelyabinsk.
