I can pretty much say with high confidence the northern access road into Yellowstone NPS will be closed for at least 2 years or longer. They may have to reroute the road further away from the river to avoid another disastrous flood. If so, that would further lengthen environmental review process and delaying reconstruction. Let that be a learning lesson not to build roads and buildings so close to any water area.

You will be able to come up through the eastern, western and southern entrances to the Park in the next few weeks. The 2 northern entrances will be shut down. You won't be able to use major parts of the northern loop section of the grand loop. The news today, the 15th is worse. Looking like other entrances might be closed longer than I initially guessed.

My parents worked in Yellowstone for 20 years so, of course, I spent a lot of time in Yellowstone over the years. They lived in Gardner and worked at Mammoth. Hard to believe the road between the two will be closed for an indefinite period of time. This is a nightmare for hospitality. No food supplies coming in for now. No travel between Lake and Canyon, among others. Hotel reservations are total horror. ALOT of reimbursements. So, if I had reservations for last night and couldn’t get there, when I can travel within the park, when I do arrive at the hotel, I wouldn’t have a room. It’s already been reserved by someone else. To get in the park in a couple of years we had to make our reservations two years in advance, there was absolutely nothing available next summer. My heart goes out to all.

Yellowstone area weather and environment allows for construction one month per year. Couple that with slow progress of public works, lack of funding and environmental lawsuits that’ll inevitably happen it’ll be at best case scenario decades, not years, but decades before that road is repaired into a condition where 2-way traffic could flow uninterrupted. It takes 10 years to repave 15 miles of road inside Yellowstone. At that rate it’ll take 3 decades for the road to be rebuilt and that’s a best case scenario if they could even secure funding, in other words anyone trying to access the park from Bozeman in the next 30 years minimum is out of luck.
