Year Of 5Finds: Shopping Report Card

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

That's A Wrap on my Year Of 5Finds!!!
In today's video I'm sharing the result of my Year of 5Finds. My goal was to Shop Less and Shop Better. Did I even do that? Or did I just become an average shopper?
I'm not even sure if anyone reads whats in the description box. But I wanted to clarify why I shared my total spend for the year. Now to be clear, spending less or keeping a budget wasn't my goal. And in fact I knew that in order to Shop Better (better quality, more ethically) I would actually be spending more per item than I have in years past, but potentially Less all together. So while I don't have my total spend to compare against for 2017 (I wish i did, but it would be a wild guess), I thought it would be helpful as a starting point to compare for future Shopping Report Card Videos (which I plan to do again). I also thought it was interesting to compare against the average shopper. So while I considered editing that portion out, I decided to keep it because I personally found it interesting.
Thanks so much for watching!
Excited to share my Year Of for 2020 with you soon!

Loved this series! cant wait to see how you progress with the whole shopping journey in 2020. Thank you also for being so transparent and open and talking about what went trough your mind, I think having an overview of what you bought can be really eyeopening and might inspire others to do the same. I definitly have been shopping more mindful this year and I guess thats partially influenced by your great output.

I can't tell you how much i have loved this series from you. I don't purchase a lot but I wasn't as intentional in the past as I wanted and now I really think about purchases and Ive have found myself making lists of clothes i actually want and not buying something when I can't find what I actually want because it's good enough. I'm not only writing a list for 2020 but keeping a list of everything I buy clothing wise for this year(love that idea). I purchased more last year because of weight loss and will again for some of this year but I don't want to bring anything into my house I don't love and truly need/want. Makeup is a whole different struggle but I have been making huge changes on that in 2019 and will even more in 2020(that's my Achilles heal).

It’s really interesting that you became more aware of your shopping when watching yourself back. This is a helpful tactic when going through therapy or learning what the reality of how we are acting (or interacting) with people. I love all your videos and love this series! Merry Christmas and here’s to a great 2020!

Loved this series. Always looked forward to your videos. I’m going to try a year of five finds. My shopping habits are out of control. Thank you for making me be more conscious of what I’m buying. Have tried to not go shopping just to shop. Have to have a purpose. Hoping you and your family have a happy and healthy 2020.

I have loved this series!! My biggest problem is impulse shopping! I would love to know how many items from 2017 do you still have & how many do you like/love? Maybe even compare it with what you bought in 2019 & what items of those do you love?

You're such a source of encouragement to us! We are on a "Slow Fashion" journey for 2020. We know that looks different to everyone, but we are looking to purchase pre-loved/thrifted as far as possible. If not, then hopefully supporting local business (reducing our carbon footprint), shopping either sustainable or ethical brands. We're so excited for this journey! xo

I have loved loved loved this series! I am definitely going to limit my purchases in 2020 based on what I’ve learned from you. And I must say that floral print looks incredible on you!!! Would love to know what makeup you’re wearing, but maybe you’ll cover that in your beauty finds video.

Love this series. I began tracking my purchases mainly to see how much use I was getting out of each one. This is the third year and I've made 34 purchases and spent just under $1900.

This was great comparison I am trying to move away from fast fashion too and I love the way you have approached it. As a side note maybe it is worth looking at your shopping in 2017/2018 and see what you still love and use and what proportion of it has already been given away/discarded/ or damaged in some way. I feel we all love to bash on fast fashion but there are items in my closet which I have had for 5 years and I still reach for it and they maybe from one of the fast fashion brand I feel I have truly used that item of clothing!

Thanks Dhivya! I do plan to do an upcoming video where I revisit past favorites from 2017 and 2018. I know I decluttered a ton of the items in my big closet purge video from 2018. But you are absolutely correct about Fast Fashion... So many it my old items are still in fabulous shape and I'll continue to wear for years to come!

Refreshing approach - a spreadsheet is def the way to go, to keep you honest. Do you apply an in/out rule to avoid 60 items a year overwhelming your wardrobe? Great video, thanks. Ciao.

It sounds like you are guestimating that you bought about 8 items a month in 2017... That doesn't sound so bad! Love your videos and your year of 5 finds is motivating!

Thanks Jess! It's interesting when you put it that way bc 8 doesn't seem too far off from 5 per month... but man was that a total mind shift!

I’d also like to ask...in 2018 during your year of simple, you decluttered your closet. I would love to see a follow up and hear you reflect on how being more mindful while shopping has changed your wardrobe as a whole and revisit your closet now. Thank you.

I wonder if it would be helpful for your mindset to "Spin" a month ahead so that as you shop in the current month you already know what to expect the following month.. that's how you did a lot of your planning last year, you knew when you needed an item and if you could work it in.. I think the stress of trying to rush in your allotted amount of items in any given month, is too much; and may even be forcing you to shop more often, and then return more often than you might like. 🤔😘

I found your channel while searching no buy 2020, even though your not doing no buy...but, it popped up... I am going to track every purchase from the areas where I have a problem with spending... I didn’t think I had a problem with spending on clothes, but, when I do a no buy month, i see things I like...🤔 I started some no buys in July ‘19...Some mos I did well...other mos. I didn’t follow the no buy at all... In Dec. I gave it up... Starting fresh in Jan. I picked 3 things I don’t want to spend for the month... But, guess what...there is going to be a sale...it is from a small business...there are like 3 clothing items that look amazing!!! So....maybe...I’m going to switch the no buy...to the 5 finds??? I have time to think...I haven’t bought anything yet... It’s going to be interesting what I decide...

Hi Carol! Report back with what you decide to do. I've never done a No Buy Year, so I can't speak to how that might shift my shopping mindset... but a No Buy Month did nothing for me. Picked right back up. One of my best friends was considering a No Buy Year and I talked her into buying at least 1 thoughtful item a month. I shifts your mindset to buying what will actually serve your closet... and cost becomes a very small part of the equation. Good Luck to you!

What Kate Finds It’s the 5th and I haven’t spent a penny yet... I am going to do 5 finds...I never heard of it until I found your channel & I think it’s reasonable... The areas of my “problem areas are” 1.Clothes, (not worried about underwear, socks or Pjs)....I have a lot of underwear (also a new pack I haven’t opened)🙄, I’m good with socks & I am in the process of buying a couple bras(I don’t need to spend a lot on them & they last me for years) I just need to replace a couple...but I will count it as my 5 for the month whichever month I purchase them... I have plenty of Pjs & don’t need to buy any... 2. Planner supplies, stickers, pens, & markers... 3. Jewelry (I buy cheap earrings, I don’t wear my good ones as often because I tend to lose them) 4. Makeup....but, I’m better in that area as I’m getting older 😊 I only use a certain good skincare regimen & it lasts 6 mos. all natural from my esthetician... I think my hardest one will planner stuff & clothes...don’t know why??? I’ve replaced about 10 tops in 2019 because I was lacking clothes after getting rid of 3 /13 gallon bags full in 2018... Thanks for responding...
