Yankees vs. Red Sox: Does England have an appetite for baseball? | MLB

With the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox playing an historic two-game series at the London Stadium, ESPN decided to delve a little deeper into America’s national pastime and its origins in England. We caught up with a British professor and American baseball historian John Thorn, who claims the sport was first played in England in the 1690’s and a different version adopted in America in the 1730’s wasn’t the invention of Abner Doubleday. Plus, we met some of the locals that have taken to the sport and the London ‘Mets’ who remain undefeated to their rivals, the London ‘Capitals.’

To James Davies: It is refreshing to know that being in the UK you can fairly and personally choose your United States sports teams, and not be psychologically holed-up in a region or city that you cannot mentally separate yourself from, lest you seem as if an outcast with your friends, students, or co-workers. ------------------------ It is akin to having fewer options to venture and reside in neighborhoods outside of "one's own" and are stuck with their cultures, music, and entertainment. If you choose a topic out of bounds, you are ostracised. In the States, it's heartbreaking. I am a UK expat to the US and wasn't used to this and still am not. Even London's Brixton and Notting Hill, back in the day were not black neighborhoods.

I think the US should indoctrinate the children in other countries to play baseball when they're little lol. Joking. But I played baseball growing up here in the US. I played in "minor league" 12 years old, and then in Little League (13-14) or so years old and then when I was 15 "senior league" I think it was called. And I liked certain MLB players during that time. Honestly as an adult I stopped following the sport but this past week I've been watching Japanese player Ichiro and been looking at Japanese videos about baseball etc. The Japanese really like the MLB it seems like.

We used to have baseball teams here in late 19th century. Derby County FC used to play at the Baseball Ground until the late 1990s, it was even used for baseball before football. There was a league but it only lasted a decade or so. Anyway, I'm a big cricket fan, would like to get into baseball, so will watch the games. @itheuser First I agree . I used to find cricket boring, I didn't understand it. Then really got into it when I was 15. I think the more you watch on TV, the more games you go to, the more discussions you have on a sport the more you get to enjoy it. I think that is soccer's problem in America- women's team is best in world, so women's game is popular, but not the men's the other sports will always be more popular.I quite enjoyed the Yankees v Red Sox game. Great entertainment, crazy score! 17-13?! I always thought baseball was lower scoring than that?

That will probably become the most popular version because it's shorter and more action packed.

An mlb team for britain would most definitely help baseballs popularity there. The problem is Britain is too far from the u.s. Just flying to the east coast of the u.s. to play games is a 5 hour flight from britain. So you can only imagine how long of a flight a west coast u.s. trip will be from Britain. Then you add 162 games ontop of that, where half of those games are road games and it just becomes too much. Maybe when commercial flights go super sonic and flight times are a fraction of what they are now, then it maybe possible to have international teams. until then, i don't see any country outside of north america getting a mlb team anytime soon.

That would be a more accurate way to state it, because that's what we actually gave them and gave to the world. Led Zeppelin and the other fantastic bands needed to have the music first to write/play/sing like they did and still do + their enormous talent and musical skills.

Baseball should be more popular in the UK, after all, they invented the sport. I think its not popular because the UK has not done enough to promote the sport. When you get to understand the game you will relize how much more exciting the sport is compared to football and other sports. Still, I think it will take more then a two game series to make baseball popular here in the UK

Perhaps the KBO could turn it around with the interest in baseball in the UK. most other Korean interests are gathering pace world wide. it be fantastic if a Korean based company in the UK would sponsor baseball in the UK . Also all the USA military bases in the UK they could help support British baseball, Even let us use their baseball pitches for practice. I suppose the security would be a logistical nightmare for them thou.

It's simply a matter of which sports you grow up with. Baseball is quite different from many constant action sports. Baseball is about strategy and skill more so then raw physical prowess. It's about the pitcher vs. the batter. It's about building to a crescendo. It's calm enough to have a conversation, but also explosive and violent enough to have a hard ball moving faster then most people have driven. It's a thinking mans sport. In parts of the US baseball is a bit like a religion. The Japanese have taken it as their own for a long time now. I find it interesting how the game has evolved slightly differently in Japan, yet still very much the same game.

Correction: it was actually the British who gave America baseball, not the other way around. Baseball was based on numerous bat and ball sports that were previously played in Britain, most notably rounders. The way I see it, it's pretty unlikely that baseball, Major League or otherwise, will ever be successful in Britain. What the high attendance numbers from the recent MLB game in London won't tell you is that most of those people were Americans who carved enough time out of their schedules and found enough money to make the trip across the pond and see the game in person. Same goes for football; the only football Brits care about is soccer, which is why the NFL is wasting its time holding games over there.

I like the pace of baseball, and the fact that you have to keep playing until someone wins. You can't have a tie. I saw a game at Yankee Stadium that went extra innings until something like 1:00 am--and no one could score the winning run. So they stopped, and then started the game up the next day to finish it.
