What we do is stand around pointing out the wrong things the mouse is doing, getting angry at the mouse for lashing out. Several global strikes and actions happened which were inspiring and gave the Dockers strength and solidarity to continue.

    Lol this is the stupidest argument over semantics I’ve ever seen. Clearly when Yanis said boarders he meant national boarders between countries... and when he said scar, he is implying that they are an ugly imposition on the earth that are the remains of painful battles which we could do without... it’s not that complicated. Saying “there will always be boarders of some kind” is a non-sequitur because he’s obviously talking about a specific kind of boarders, so it’s not a response to anything being talked about. How about instead of twisting words and playing games with semantics we try to actually understand what each other are saying?

    Imagine if instead of cancelling one or the other, people united using both paths?

  • @danielsykes7558

    @danielsykes7558

    3 жыл бұрын

    ^^^ solidarity. Taking both paths is solidarity. ^^^ When I was in school, I joined some usually urban groups that are starting to bridge this divide, but we need to go further. These two organizations do exist in the rural US, but they aren't as strong as in urban areas of the US. I would say similar things about the Progressive International in the US actually, I don't know of many (if any) rural hubs of the Progressive International. At the Sunrise Movement and the Democratic Socialists of America we intentionally uplift Black Lives Matter and stand in solidarity at actions, but we also have started to bring food to union strikers, join the picket lines, et cetera, because we need real labor power, we need unions. I think that the rural united states, especially Appalachia, needs to be explicitly included in our antiracism efforts. The upper classes of the US and the middle class as well, seem rife with bigotry against the people of Appalachia. Upper class whites in the US still uplift the gentility of the south, even as they deride country or folk music (both of which used to be used for causes on the left, like class solidarity, union strikes, and racial integration, even if those messages have been stripped from the genre for the most part). Bigotry often stems from pain, and the superficial bigotries of language can often be moved past, and we can learn together. I think that the onus is on liberal and left groups to reach out to the rural (largely scots-irish and latino/latina/latine) working classes in the united states. I'm currently in a rural area, but when I go back to school, I should bring this perspective to the city. We should then leave our urban bubbles intentionally to network with workers in rural areas. Those of us who know middle class liberals, should encourage them to open their minds to rural America, and to stand in inter-class solidarity. It shouldn't be considered politically correct in middle (nor upper) class liberal circles to derogatorily call somebody a r*dneck or a h*ck or a h*llb*lly, but if some of us working class white leftists want to reclaim the term redneck because of our history of solidarity with black folks, or any other term we want to reclaim, we should do so. We should wear it as a badge of honor. Also, like you've said, there's no reason to cancel each other for slipping up, or even being ignorant of different notions. I think that when we meet together face-to-face in solidarity in both urban and rural picket lines, these conversations can blossom. I've never seen anyone truly get cancelled face to face. Particularly not by people who are intentionally trying to tie our movements together. I've also seen people my age coming together through Tiktok. There are a lot of rural gay folks on tiktok and lefty-types who have served in the armed forces, and Appalachian socialists, all of whom still respect their queer and trans siblings, uplift people of color, and stand in solidarity overall. I think that as we age, if any of us end up finding ourselves in positions of privilege or in middle-class circles or in academia, we need to be careful to not divorce ourselves from our working class roots, or if we were raised middle class, not to divorce ourselves from the poverty of our 20s, or our unemployment during 2020. I think we all need to be aware that the structures of the institutions (that we may enter into in order to get food to our own tables) may influence us in the end. We need to cultivate and maintain inter-class solidarity just as much as we cultivate antiracism, just as much as queer liberation. The answer is not 'either or', it is 'yes and'.

    wow very insightful comment for KZread thread, I think it's a general sign of the pivotal moment we are all in! Being working class, and opting for more freedom than the careerist path personaly - I would just add how the working class also has a responsibility to reframe & reimagine our circumstances to liberate ourselves from the ideological work pride bias that can be so alluring to us. It is essentially what John Lennon's working class hero was about. I struggled with that sense of identity myself. I think its natural for us to rationalize our the sacrifice and suffering we may be vulnerable to on a personal level in a dog eat dog system instead of recognizing its somewhat inherent in the exploitive nature of the system we participate in. Obviously its not easy for many of us to reconcile our own responsibility in the matter when were just trying to survive but this is still essential to see beyond our own circumstances and take part in a vision of something bigger than ourselves- like progressive internationalism!

Now, how many are truly reasonable, that's another story... (btw, yh, I have to mention that I myself have met many supposed leftists(?!)/progressives(???)/SJWs(?) who act like immature fascists in practice, or, to be more exact, their favorite (paraphrased/enriched) motto is "if you don't agree with me 100% and you criticize my comments/language/behavior in the slightest, you're a misogynistic fascist yourself". Fascist behavior and mentality isn't limited to fascists, sadly. And that needs to be addressed, we got to be serious if we want to see real positive change. Altho it's probably too late for that already. But hey.) It's exactly this objectivity and realism that can unite ppl, imo. Divide and conquer has to stop being so effective so easily. We got to become mature, honest, and eventually, united. For now, the only ppl who have united, under Mr 45, are the only ones who shouldn't be united.... Who are the true imbeciles/incels/whatever insult we use to describe these fools...? Please listen to: Thrice - Only Us p.s. I don't exclude fascists myself btw, I talk to them too, with almost the same respect as I show to anyone else, at first. But they always end up saying completely one-sided things that are twisting reality or present half truths (and I don't tolerate these, especially as I'm trying so hard to be objective and understanding), and don't even return the respect usually, so I understand that they're beyond redemption. The reason the ‘metropolitan’ liberals are so alienated from the traditional blue collar population is that the liberals are the modern equivalent of the petite bourgeoisie. They identify with capital and want to strengthen its role in their lives, just as the petite bourgeoisie do. Technically speaking, the liberals are “working class,” but they live an idealized existence. Luckily for the rest of us, Zoom and remote work via the internet will subject the liberals (the professional - managerial class) to the same wage pressures that traditional blue collar workers have experienced. This is called Factor Price Equalization, or more pointedly, ‘the melting of the snowflake.’

Why pay $80K to an American accountant when $20K will buy the same service abroad? This is my point. I didn't mention international trade, but of course it has implications for that. The payments made to workers abroad would be same as dollars spent for goods manufactured abroad - negative numbers in the current account of the U.S. balance of payments. I take it your are from the UK. I don't know about your national accounting. You tell me. Does England run a current account deficit? And yes we’re running a 4% deficit on current a/c. But as far as I’ve seen managerial roles in the UK for firms that can relocate those abroad are already from foreign firms and are even increasing their presence here (Fujitsu comes to mind) but I think we’re moving into a higher wage bracket here that wouldn’t be so affected as by HR decisions down the pay scale.

    The problematic is that all political and socio-economic institutions and theories have an immensely narrow optic of the ontological identity of the human being. Humans will never be completely understood, hence the extreme effort of all institutions to create a human identity which fits their ideology. The reason for this, is fear! Fear of not being able to be in control. In other words, all political systems are merely materialistic, as they ignore fundamental aspects of human beings, such as subjectivity and spirituality. This means that they are always bound to fail. I believe that the answer to our problems would be a global Socratic humility; « I know one thing, that I know nothing ».

    I (may be naively) believe that every human being on the planet is supportive of minimum basics of life. I.e have the security of a liveable roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, food in our cupboard, clean running water sanitation & utilities, education and health service. I believe perhaps naively that the money exists between all of us collectively rich and poor to pave the way to this becoming reality. However I am reluctantly coming to the view that many politicians are mistrusted and are of such poor quality the normal person in the street does not support them or the groups that hijack them and distort the message / actions. The more I listen to Yanis the more I am understanding and thi k perhaps his views are in the right direction. I do however find that the intellectual discussions and many of the words or terms used confuse and loose the message and become a bit to clever. I'm busy looking up the meanings of neo liberalism proletariat etc etc. Perhaps to have a wider appeal the language and message needs to be simpler?

If you are giving a lecture (interview/podcats/wtv) for an international audience it's best you keep your examples to things that everyone knows. He could have have used dozens other examples of "difficult" borders in the world, but it wouldn't reach as many people as this comparison did. And also, no other border in the world is so "economically powerful" as the Mexican/US one. Not even Russia with China. Also, go read on his views on that Turkish/Greek border and then comeback with your findings.

That’s why focusing on the social issue that doesn’t help everyone is not and will not work. Do the economy first and social justice will follow naturally imo. Sympathy, for sure, in case we are looking for a democratic way of solving the problems and create a localized culture of democracy within that will situationally recreate itself and catch a synchron with other democracies simultaneously in every and each turn and twist in the country. Of course. Yet...this brings us to the expectancy (Erfordernis even) of sympathizing with radicals who transform democracy in a "na, let's see what the Volk devides" pragmatism which totally harms the philosophy and freedom promised within and our "pragmatic democracy" loses even its symbolic value. Symbolic democracy was something we critisized...And then came pragmatic democracy with the slogans "democracy in action!". OK, we said, "applied" will it be, this way or that way..And today we have abolished almost all the sophistication within in the sense of direct democracy as if we were in a small village. Almost direct voting as if in a communal-local election! Can you imagine? Representative Democracy was very complicated to apply so we were kind of compromising with the symbolic one...But this...now...Neither representative, nor direct; yet direct in its applications in case you have a proper look at the propaganda. Well, noone knows how our democracy will survive really: I call it "directed democracy" by the way☺. But we go on; knowing that it is at least not a dictated one...Why are we experiencing jail within our freedom and why are we experiencing dependency although independent: This, we can't understand and I completely reject to act according to the perceived dependency, and dictated jail personally: So these are the results, I personally could reach through rejection ☺ So, I reject sympatizing with populations who sympathize with democracy, but not really interested in a democratic regime. I won't and I can't. "But, but, Democracy comes after, my dear" attitude is an idiotic attitude, and is a lie some people tell to themselves to keep believing. Democracy is not a belief, it is a way of self-organizing, it is scientific, it is emeging history of thought itself. It comes before. It is conditional, infrastructural and non-compromised. So, I say, not democracy, but you...you come after in case you expect democracy comes after sympatizing with anti-democratic procedures and processes.

    Just for the record and for a bit of historical background, this tactic of separating the "Left" or "Progressives" from the traditional "working class" via various propaganda methods is definitely NOT new. The exact same fissure was created and exploited during the socalled 60's (which, of course, went on well into the 70's) such that working class white men were systematically enrolled into the idea that it was the cry for freedom for Black people and women, that was ruining their shot at the American dream. People like MLK, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton were all killed just as they started to talk about unity between oppressed minorities and the larger working class--a very threatening alliance indeed to the Ruling Class. And the Left often fell for it also, calling things like LGBTQ struggles aspects of "crumbling decadent capitalism" thus widening the divide between working class people and other freedom fighters. Nothing is new. Only our response can be.
