Yanis Varoufakis in conversation with Anish Kapoor | DiEM25

The coronavirus crisis is revealing that the powers that be of the European Union have learned nothing from the Eurocrisis.
They are currently betraying the interests of the majority of Europeans in the same way that they have done so in 2010 -- by failing to mobilize existing money and public financial instruments in the interests of the many. With their current decisions, they are jeopardizing public health, public goods and the interests of Europeans.
We call it TV because we like retro-futurism. But it's much more than TV. In times of global pandemics, DiEM25 is launching a special online and completely free program to understand the current crisis and offer tools and hope to get out of it stronger and more united in building the World After Coronavirus. Everyone will be able to join and pose questions, suggest next topics and next guests!

This is SUCH a pleasure for me! I have long been in awe of Mr.Kapoor's brilliance and to find him so candid, personable and open is a revelation. And of course Mr.Varoufakis needs no introduction, so cool to find we share this passion. Many thanks to you both.

Gratitude, for your wonderful heartfelt thought-provoking conversations as always Yanis, and this one with an extroardinary artist, Anish Kapoor. Touching on Anish closing words on the power of poetry, would like offer this quote from Ursula K. Le Guin, “science describes accurately from outside, poetry describes accurately from inside.” She continues, “science explicates, poetry implicates. Both celebrate what they describe.” Peace love and unitifing grounded visions of near and more equatable futures.

Wonderful conversation between two people who offer, dare I say it, some hope and the possibility of other ways forward. Very sad the comments on the removal of freedom in art.

I've been all over the world - and never heard of him. A non-religious Jewish Hindu? Does that make any sense? Gonna Google him now to see who he is.... --- Oh, a sculptor. That's why I know nothing about him. 😁

So if I may come back to TRY to complete the circle (never perfect, but Zen nonetheless), I was delighted to learn more about Mr. Kapoor. What a great interview. I am busy engaging my fellow Americans here in the state of Georgia -- yes -- on the topics of democracy ("the most fragile of flowers") and capitalism.

Question for the team about the look of your videos' thumbnails. How did you decide to keep a "neutral" title thumbnail, with the TV over red and just the names of the guests? After a while following you, I wonder why not show the guest. That would jumps to the eye and make the individual videos easier to find. Maybe it's for some specific reason I can't think of. I mean I do Iike the TV logo, but now I just see all these "red tiles" and they all look the same. I know, I know, how hard is it to read the names? Still... just my 2 cents. Still a big fan! ;-)

Few things come to mind after hearing the talk and reading the comments. A) how the internalized identities of self in this case the Jewish in Israel, when he as there, influence our behaviour, which can happen to anybody. This can be deeper than racism and natural perhaps , coming from something like hey you are different, are you one of us' kind of sentiment. The racism is a set of behaviours deliberately carried out to suppress/ hurt another. B) Having or not having money has nothing to do with socialism. Socialism is a set of beliefs that can transcend money making mechanisms and the definitions can change around a core belief.

We as a humanity need to learn to stop. What I mean is to learn to at some level accepting the present, while trying to improve it and live simply. Then we can enjoy now fully. This process is easy when basic needs are fulfilled like for Europeans, which is not the case for many on the planet. So in simple terms we need to share and work towards getting all on a baseline, with access to education, healthcare, food etc. The internet is very good at disseminating ideas. If we let greed and incessant market driven resource destructive greed to set the pace, we are doomed. You need to create a movement of recycling, using the old, growing trees, our own things even in pots, roof tops etc. and make these kind of living popular, so others will join a and it will grow .

The problem that exists with the UK's Guardian review of your book this past Sept.4th, as I read it and yes, it was done sketchily, is that solely taking a mechanistic view of how to rectify the wrongs of capitalism by reforming the system, entirely misses the mark. The real issue is PROFIT, and how personal profit morphs into group profit and hence the ills of the corporate coup we witness all 'round.

Great discussion by 2 fine gentleman. Only wish this discussion had further investigated being an artist before the tech bubble billionaire class was created through this so called capitalism, and rent gauged your eyes out. Bob Dylan didn't have to wait tables to survive prior to his renissance. Todays culture, you can buy fame. Just look at Taylor Swift. While Ms. Swift is a fine pop star, her rocket ship to stardom was well planned and heavily financed. Yes, you can find some poor exception to the rule or some gifted talent. But for the most part, the arts, like higher education is for the privileged only. Nice little group of elitists that it has become, and goes well with our so called journalist community. Is there such a thing as a journalist in todays virtual reality? As this discussion accurately points out, "everything has become a commodity," particularly the human race. Isn't this fun? Now, we have KZread stars who are so called "influencers"? Amazing... "All intention missed the mark." Well said Mr. Kapoor! "WE must now reflect on what we've done to our world. What we've done to each other." Further, "What we know now is that capitalism has failed us in this endeavor,. An endeavor that speaks profit at ANY cost... " referring to the current state of the human race along with the beautiful planet, we call Mother Earth. Brilliant Mr. Kapoor!

Shine on you crazy diamonds - Yanis and Anish - I dedicate Pink Floyd to you guys. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYOMtsZ_ks3ag8o.html Capitalism brought us to its edge for us to decide whether to stay put at its edge or to explore beyond. As usual the first explorers do not know what's in it for them. Those who wanna know first before taking any action are the ones who would wait till the first explorers return with their accounts, if and when they return.

Funny you’re talking about racism in the art world in the 70’s and 80’s but refuse to deal with it in your lap in the present moment. Zero black people on any of these diem forums and not addressing black lives matter Insurrection right now. It’s as much a European issue as American. Get on board already please

Cathal Ó Braonáin Palestinians receive significant attention in the international community. I don’t think it needs to be a competition it should be solidarity between those struggles. And it’s pertinent to address america right now because it’s the center of an insurrection. This insurrection should absolutely be linked with Palestine not contrasted with it. And no diem has not addressed black lives matter in any significant way in their videos. They have had people of middle eastern decent on their committees but none of African decent. There is a deafening silence when it comes to black voices on here. The progressive international has done well to elevate black voices as well as devoting an entire segment to Palestine. Diem should do more to diversify its members that’s my point.
