Originally Sien Drachams was a popular Greek song that was adopted by the Sephardic community of Thessaloniki. The two performers who created it were Sadik and Gazoz, who worked together in the thirties of the last century. They set Ladino lyrics to Greek songs. At a time when the Jewish community in Greece thrived and flourished, they published their Ladino songs in local magazines.
This love song, which was published in 1935, matched the atmosphere of that time in which thousands of Jews emigrated to Palestine ("Let's run away to Palestine, and escape the horror"). However, the lyrics are a chilling prophecy of the tragic fate of the great Jewish community that would be destroyed almost completely during World War II.
The existing arrangements for this beautiful song (originally named "Mansevo Dobro") are influenced by the Greek style of music. Aviv Bahar's arrangement manages to evoke the story behind the song, the tragic story of its creators, two young artists in Thessaloniki in the 1930s (1930-1940), who were transported to their deaths simply because they were Jews.
We had originally planned our second album to be entirely in Hebrew. For this album, we wanted to produce our original work with some small traditional additions here and there. But then this song came along and turned all our plans upside down. It was impossible to resist its beauty. We just had to have this hypnotic arrangement in the new album.

Ladino, otherwise known as Judeo-Spanish, is the spoken and written language of Jews of Spanish origin. Ladino was consolidated as a specifically Jewish language after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, when it came into contacts with Turkish and other Balkan languages, and adopted a massive vocabulary from Hebew. It is also known as Judezmo, Dzhudezmo, or Spaniolit.
When the Jews were expelled from Spain and Portugal they were cut off from the further development of the language, but they continued to speak it in the communities and countries to which they emigrated. The further away from Spain the emigrants went, the more cut off they were from developments in the language, and the more Ladino began to diverge from mainstream Castilian Spanish. Ladino therefore basically reflects the grammar and vocabulary of 15th century Spanish, but has heavy Hebrew and Turkish components.

My brother and I played this music and many of Yamma's videos for my mother while she was dying. We wanted to bring her comfort and expanded consciousness. The muslims or 'moors' who were predominantly present in muslim Iberia were found to be genetically part Amazigh(indigenous North African) partly Iberian (see 8000 years of genomic history of the Iberian peninsula which came out 2 years ago), no "Syrian' ancestral remains were traced nor found in these studies. Or perhaps you could trace part of your ancestry from North Africa and Iberia, as part of your ancestors could have fled after the reconquista to the eastern mediterranean Turkiye (besides to North Africa) and eastwards further to present day Syria. This is the possibility i could imagin to what could have happened.

Wow, what a wonderful song and music! At first I didnโt pay attention to it, but then I noticed how it stands out among others in my playlist of songs for concentration and work.
Talya's voice weights several hundred pounds but you hardly notice it, for it moves slowly, and soothes you. Almost a dangerous proposition. The ensemble is very subtle, and powerful. The whole thing another example of giving from what's yours and recieving from others around you, incorporating into yourself and returning it back, to begin all over again. To remind those who can see and hear, and touch and feel that everything is everyone and all belongs to all of us for we are all part of it.

Your performance popped up in my monitor by chance and I opened it because I had seen other performances by other groups of Sephardim music, hope to have the term right. Perhaps from my Spanish Caribbean origin, and first layer baby boomer, which made me be exposed to an earlieer form of music and expression of feeling around all over the Caribbean until after WW II. Your music is familiar, sounds and feels familiar. It is a known fact that in Puerto Rico and all over the Caribbean there are lots and lots of Sephardim names, mine among them, something I learned no more than three years ago. So is no mystery to me that the soul in the music took roots who knows in how much of a widespred manner and I am listeing back on it through you. Would love to come across some kind of stupid argument around 'proof or lack of it' around this I'm saying. It would make my day. Thank you very much again for your response, Be blessed and remain protected.

This song hits home and I can't explain it. I got to visit Thessaloniki a few years ago. It was only for a day and I didn't know what to do. A habit of mine is to look up Jewish history in an area. It hit me to read of the Jewish people being taken away by the Nazi's. It felt lonely walking around the former Jewish area of the city and as though their voice was forgotten by most. This song is so personal and beautiful, yet sad at the same time.

@@patmurphy389 Ladino is combination of 15th century spanish, hebrew and language of country native speakers moved to after edict of alhambra. Another song yamma performed is in Ladino spoken in turkey because kondja is turkish for rose so when translates name of song kondja mia translates as my rose. Another name for ladino is judeo-spanish because in name of shepardi jews, shepardi is derived from hebrew word sepharad of sefarad,not sure how it's spelled which means spain in hebrew. From this you can see that there is much more to learn about jews yet there is one thing i don't know and can't find out. Why most of world hates jews so much? I don't hate them.
