1:24 Completely wrong information. The fact it calls itself a serialisation language means that it can be used to save the state of an object. One purpose for doing that is to transfer data over the network. So, YAML does tell us what problem it is trying to solve.

You got close, but you stopped just short of an amazing fact about YAML. All JSON files are also automatically YAML files! Yes, JSON is, by design, a proper subset of YAML. Those [] and {} that you showed can be nested just as they are in JSON, and you can even have part of your config "YAML-like" and part of it "JSON-like" and it all works out. Please note that it does not work the other way around though. That's why I prefer YAML config files now, because if I can't get the indentation or syntax correct, I can always smatter in some JSON. Oh, and even if the whole thing is JSON, it's "relaxed" JSON, because you have YAML's comments, and YAML's no-need-to-quote key/value pairs for the JSON-like objects. And as long as you're inside either {} or [], arbitrary newlines, indentation, and comments are ignored!
