Yamas and Niyamas: The '1st and 2nd Angas' by Sri M

Sri M now goes back to the first two important angas in Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga - Yamas and Niyamas.
Sri M says, "For the practice of yoga, Yamas and Niyamas are very important. Sadhana pada is the second section of the Yogasutras of Patajali, after the samadhi pada, but before looking into the samadhi aspect you need to keep your chitta (mind) free of vrittis (disturbances). For that you need to practise the Yamas and Niyamas. So this is sadhana pada, what you have to practise to get there, (samadhi)....."
The Yamas are :
Ahimsa (non-violence)
Satya (truthfulness)
Asteya (non-stealing)
Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)
Brahmacharya (restraint in sexual conduct)
The Niyamas are :
Saucha (purity)
Tapas (purification through discipline)
Santosha (contentment)
Svadhyaya (self-study)
Ishvara Pranidhana (contemplation on Ishvara)
This online session took place on 18th June, 2020 in Madanapalle.

About Sri M
Born in India, Sri M is a spiritual guide, social reformer, educator and writer. He first met his Master at the age of nine under the jackfruit tree, in the compound of his house in Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian coastal state of Kerala.
The full account of his astonishing and amazing experiences are published in his memoir from 2011 titled “Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master - A Yogi’s Autobiography“, which became an instant bestseller. He has written a sequel to his autobiography, titled “Sri M - The journey continues”. He has written two more books - Shunya, his first novel and his latest one being - 'On Meditation', a book which answers questions on meditation.
Sri M has traveled the world fulfilling his life’s mission to teach and guide people as instructed by his Master, Maheswarnath Babaji. Over the years, Sri M’s mission as a spiritual guide, social reformer and educator have given rise to many initiatives including:
- high-quality, multi-lingual education, free to rural children
- Satsang Rural School - an unique and innovative approach to education.
- Co-educational, residential school committed to providing in-depth exploration of knowledge.
- Affordable, preventive and curative holistic health care
In 2015, Sri M went on a 16-month journey, Walk of Hope, from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, spanning 5000 miles across 11 states of India, to bring attention to humanity’s need for peace, harmony and tolerance.
Sri M says: “Go to the core. Theories are of no use.” His message seeks to transcend the outer-shell of all religions, by exploring their mystical essence and thus nurture the innate goodness in every human being. To know more about Sri M and his programs, please log on to :

Putting here for a quick reference. Do go through the video fully (swadhyaya). Yama: 12:45 1. Ahimsa : non violence - Don't hurt.. No violence in thought, in words, in intensions / emotions about anyone / anything. Watch the thoughts and cut down hatred, jealousy and hurtful feelings. 17:17 2. Satya : stick to the truth - bring down the number of lies I tell out of compulsion or fear or just for show off. 19:10 3. Astheya : not stealing - Remove thought of having something that does not belong to me. Applies to desire for the person of opposite sex as well. 21:38 4. Brahmacharya : Restrain on Sex - Sexual desire should listen to my mind and not the other way around. 25:22 5. Aparigraha : non possession - simple living and always remember that things that I have can go away anytime. Don't take things for granted. Niyama: 29:55 1. Shoucha: purity - physical cleanliness and mental purity as well 30:35 2. Santhosha : Contentment - Understand that happiness is a state of mind. External stuff can't bring peace. 32:27 3. Tapa : fire - to find the ultimate truth. 34:43 4. Swadhyaya: self study - study Bhagavad gita / upanishads / bhahma sutras / yoga sutras / Bhagavatam / complete works of swamy vivekananda 36:10 5. Ishwara Pranidhana - dedicate life to Ishwara - think that a spark of the divine exists within me and fix attention on it. 26:45 Mahavratham - observe these at all times in all places.

I just love the practicality of what Sri M presents. He takes the perspective of a beginner. It is most grounding in how life actually is. I had an idea that I am at some advanced stage of spiritual evolution. Listening to Sri M is most illuminating and revealing as to the reality of my current state. In fact, I now feel more compassionate towards my own ignorance.

Jennifer Grove , Indeed. This is a journey of Self awareness and it is a journey of knowledge plus experience. Knowledge without experience is a waste of time for us householders. Sri M speaks to householders because he is a householder himself. Hence the more I understand my own ignorance the more compassion I feel for others.

Outstanding! I would say that in each requirement, start by observing how you do not attain to it. Just like in A/Himsa. Watch yourself stealing, having sex, eating too much/little, etc. All of it. Increasing awareness will bring more control, tho not perfect at first. The felt sense of choosing is still a long way off.
