This is the end game of headfi purchase validation addicts. Being addicts, they feel the itch to keep it up, but need more and more esoteric methods to get the equal amount of dopamine fixation. This is what happens. You get people saying a headphone that legitimately sounds like a Mcdonalds drive-through with 10% THD is acceptable. Because the size of the fixation needed means things that normal people never need to think about like esotericness, expense, and exclusively come into play. When you are this far in, they become required traits of the fixation.

Get ready for one of 3 replies; "Have you heard it?" Implying there is no way you could have this conclusion if you did. "Keep thinking that". A deflection used by addicts without confronting anything actually objectionable. "This is a hobby". Implying we shouldn't call out this behaviour. Addiction doesn't just ruin you, if not pushed back against, it would normalise the behaviour conducted by others.

$5000 means a different amount to different people, its not that headphones cant be worth that much money. If you have to save up every penny for months to afford these headphones and their requisite DAC/AMPs then it just means these are beyond your league.

@@Maver1ck911 Please understand I am not trying to say these headphones are worth 5000$ for everyone. I was replying to the top comment because its implying that anyoner who purchases audio gear worth tens of thousands of $ is only doing so because they are " addicted" which is totally not true because there are many people for whom $5000 is worth the price difference as they their disposable income is enough to afford such gear without suffering from sunken cost fallacy.

I am writing this comment before watching the review. I just wanted to say that I tried these headphones at CanJam New York last February, and I was disoriented... I could not understand if it was a defective pair, or just had broken drivers, or if something was wrong with the chain driving it.... Bottom line, I hated it! I thought it sounded very weird, artificial, and not like a normal headphone, it sounded like there was a reverb applied, and the sound was tiny and as though it was happening awkwardly far from my ears. Someone there even mentioned that this was Yamaha's attempt at competing with Susvara, which is absolutely laughable. So I don't know, $5000?! Are they kidding?! Now that I vented without being influenced, I can go ahead and watch the review.

I used to own the original 1978 made totl Yamaha yh1000 and heard the yh5000 briefly at a headphone shop and was massively disappointed with the sound quality for the price they’ve listed it at. There are better planar headphones out there for under $1500. I mean it sounds okay but nothing really special. I think they’re only at best hd800s level.

Quite surprised by the comments and the review! I spent some time with these headphones I can confidently confirm two things: first, the tonal balance is absolutely outstanding in the sense that they sound so realistic and neutral that acoustic records feel completely indistinguishable from live music to the extent that it becomes scary, especially noticeable with drums; second, bass is the biggest achievement in this design - its clarity, tonal accuracy, and details cannot be even compared to anything else but live instruments. So this headphones may not be suitable for tone deaf audiophiles but, for professionals or someone who has sharp trained hearing, these headphones will be a shocking surprise, in good sense

It has way too much energy in the lower midrange making vocals sound honky and unnatural like a drive-through speaker and has a Grand canyon level, very sharp recession in a pina region that swallows all fundamental harmonic of string instruments. It is a genuine failure in making an authentic reproduction of the human voice and instrumentation.

You're clearly in the group of people I said will enjoy this headphone. That's great! A genuine congrats to you that you've found a headphone that works great for you. I don't know what your experiences are like and how similar or dissimilar they are to mine, but ultimately it doesn't matter. The question is if the person who may want to use this headphone enjoys it. That said, I have a comment on how we can all use listening experience to evaluate sound gear. One area where we all have a lot of experience is in hearing the human voice. If you're human with a functional auditory system, chances are nearly 100% that you have a lifetime of experience learning what a human voice sounds like. I think that being human and having a functional auditory system is all that's necessary to be able to determine whether electronically reproduced human voices sound reasonably close to the real thing or they don't. My ears tell me that in stock tuning and with either set of pads, the Yamaha YH-5000SE does not reproduce the tonality of human voices accurately in any way, shape, or form. Since a huge variety of musical instruments overlap with the frequency range of human voices, then by extension this headphone does not accurately reproduce the tonality of many instruments either...and least not for my ears. If it does for your ears, great! But let's also be clear that no one's experience, no matter how extensive or varied, qualifies them to tell another person whether they are hearing accurate tone or not. Hearing through someone else's ears is an experience NO ONE has.

Some people know how to use EQ and some do not, it takes a lot of time and listening to dial in EQ. Some good measurements are also very helpful. While this headphone is certainly fixable with EQ, I think the tuning is garbage for a $5k headphone (I heard it at CanJam SoCal 2023). Yamaha should be embarrassed. Too bad, such a beautiful piece of industrial design.
