I bought a Yamaha YC88 a month ago and the setup is almost the same. It has weighted wooden 88 keys instead of waterfall and of course is more for a pianist than an organist but I've learnt more from your demonstration than from any of the demos showing the 88 so far. It has exactly the same organ setup as the 61. Thanks for the detail. I'll be watching this video again.

YC61 is really a great keyboard that addresses the need for a keyboard that focuses almost 100% on the actual playing of music and creating those USABLE sounds that have dominated music for the last 50 years. Doesnt have all the bloated stuff like the big Korg or Roland workstations. This is for folks who want to focus on the sound coming out of the instrument and believe 98% of good music comes from pianos, electric organs, and synths. The easy to use interface makes that possible. I do wish they have a 76 and 88 version however to really dive low in the register for some of those great acoustic piano and over-driven organ sounds. You dont need a 1,000 page manual for this keyboard. Just start messing around and in a couple days you'll probably know how to use it like the back of your hand.

It’s literally sitting a few feet away from me against a wall, as if somehow it will start working again. I’ve done so many shows with that pedal. Luckily, my band’s guitar player had one he picked up and never used, so he gave it to me. Made my day!

I have the YC-73 with Leslie sim update...absolutely brilliant. One thing I cannot fathom in such a good keyboard is the lack of envelope control...one knob for attack and release? Yamaha what were you thinking? Hope some more envelope control will be available in an update even with menu diving would be better than nothing

Always enjoy your posts! Isn't the DRIVE on the Right side - in the AMP section still ON? You bring up a good point about them always demo'ing this instrument with the crunch engaged, maybe not on the Left, but the other Drive (on the Right.) I wish it would sound like my Reface YC!!!! (maybe it does, but I'll have to listen to your sounds-only video to find out. So far I've been underwhelmed whenever I try one. Hopefully Studiologic's firmware update on the pretty cool and much cheaper Numa Compact 2x will make this heavier, pricier shorter, no-aftertouch instrument even less intriguing. The sk-1 here and the VR-09 also please. I always miss a Yamaha piano though. And though the 1st Rhodes on the Numa is GREAT, yammy Rhodes are always yummy. Take care, rock on, solidarity among key players, ta!

Great presentation, very informative. Anyway, it will be good if you presented Hammonds without any drive in amp/Leslie section, with cleaner Leslie. But this board can really be Electro killer. Much more versatile, maybe with slightly worse soundset, definitely different. But hey, Electro doesn't have pitch bend, modulation, filter, multilayer other sounds....

Please do a sound comparison of YC61, Roland VR09, Nord Stage/Electro, and Hammond SK1/2 plugging all into a Leslie 3300. As owner of B3/Leslie 122 setup, I know that plugging even a real B3 into a keyboard amp instead of Leslie results in sound more like a Vox organ than B3 as we're used to. Demo with Leslie will boost the clones' authenticity, B3/Leslie rich fatness by 1000 percent. Onboard Leslie sims don't cut it compared to Leslie 3300 into good recording microphone. Viscount and SK1 or 2 aren't bad for sims, but still don't get the true Leslie overall sound. These You Tube B3 clone demos all sound thin, canned, especially top octave. It's mostly a problem of keyboard amp or directly routing clone with onboard rotary sims into a recording console.

I would run to the store and buy YC61, but... there's just one thing that holds me back. My old trusty Hammond SK1 has a 2 manual + pedal mode, which is important for me as an organ player. Yamaha does not. I can connect an extra keyboard and a foot keyboard to SK1 and have a full Hammond experience. Why hasn't Yamaha thought of this? YC61 is lighter, has more sounds (especially credible Yamaha pianos), and more live sets, so it could be an instant replacement for my SK1, but it won't be just for this reason.

Now i have hammond skx pro….a difference like day and night….on the YC glissandos are much more difficult….you need to press much more the keys…..the hammond keys feel lightweight and very precise….you can adjust them to your individual purpose

[Been waiting since NAMM for a thorough demo like this. Thanks! Now I have to wait until they get the darn things in the stores] *UPDATE 5/31/20 Got one of these a couple of weeks ago! Sounds are fantastic and the controls are well thought-out. As good a Hammond organ sound as there is, and the addition of the FM organs is a unique treat. The rotary emulation is where Yamaha stumbled, unfortunately. The stereo spread is very narrow, and there’s no way to spread that out. I have a MODX, and the rotary emulation on that is top notch. You can spread the stereo field from 0-degrees (effectively Mono), to a lush 180-degrees. The YC61 does not do that. It has an option to choose either Stereo or Mono, but the stereo option has a very narrow spread, somewhere in the 45-degree range.

    4 жыл бұрын

@@officialWWM It may be worth waiting to see if Yamaha comes out with a 73-key version, the way Roland did with their VR series. Roland first came out with the VR09, which is 61 keys, and then about 3 or 4 years later they came out with the improved VR730. I have the VR730, and it has a great organ sound. It's an affordable alternative to the YC61 (about $400 cheaper), and it has a MUCH better rotary speaker sim than the YC61, although the effects and product support for the VR730 leave a LOT to be desired. I'm not sure what Yamaha was thinking when they designed their rotary speaker sim, but it is about the worst I've ever heard. Hopefully they will provide an update that improves it. Otherwise, the effects on the YC61 are very good and stage-friendly. For piano and synth and other sounds, the YC 61 is excellent. Industry best in my opinion. Many of the same sounds you've heard in their best boards. It's not a "synth", so there are no deep-dive menus for sound-tweaking. You great sounds, and a simple, direct, hands-on process for modifying them to taste. I think at this point, though, the overall best option for stage organ would be the Nord electro, 73-key version if you want the most you can get, and have the money to spare. If Yamaha improves the rotary speaker sim and comes out with a 73-key version of the YC61, THAT would be the board to have!

@Tom Jones Stay away from the 09 completely. If you get the Roland, get the 730. It has waterfall keys (and of course 73 of them). The 09 has synth action keys that not a lot of users like. As far as I’m concerned, there are only 2 things about the Roland that beats out the YC61: 73 keys, and a great rotary sim. Otherwise, the Yamaha wins in everything else, IMO. The Roland VR series has some great sounds, but they’re on par with the Yamaha. Some better, some not as good. The Yamaha is more stage friendly and has way better effects. Plus, with the Yamaha, you get 6 different organ engines, whereas with the Roland you only get 3. But the Roland’s synth sounds are a little better, in my opinion.

Thanks a million for the review, and Jack for your statement concerning the Nords. There seems to be an unfounded snobbery when it comes to the red keyboards - and for a long time there was no "real" alternative in terms of the usability aspect. But Roland have their VR 730 with a similar usability concept, Sutdiologic has their Numa Compact, and I think Yamaha have knocked it out of the park here. I had the choice between the Nord 6D 73 and the Yamaha CP73. I chose the Yamaha. The pianos are stellar, the EPs lovely, the lead sounds great. And yes, the wiggle-stick tipped the scale for me. I wanted the red one... and it's like 3,5 kilos lighter. But the Keybed on the CP73 is miles ahead of the Nord's.

The Viscount clonewheel does it all very well. Keep the videos coming though love listening to them. Great work.

So this has a real FM engine, like the MODX? That's cool. Is it the same FMX engine as in the MODX/Montae? Other questions: Is it velocity/aftertouch sensitive? What is the polyphony? Is it different for samples and FM? In terms of price vs capability, how would you compare it to the very capable MODX6? Thanks!

Hi Steve. True - there was an update and the Leslie simulation is quite fair. However the sound is really weak - especially because of missing bass frequencies and the missing of a realistic key click since the virtual multi contact is missing. This is one of the most overseen but important feature when it comes to clone the original Hammond. This is not a clone but a clown (wheel) organ. My mum always said: we don’t have money for cheap things. If someone prefers a lightweigt cheap keyboard with thin sound engine the YC61 might be the perfect choice. If you want full sound - spend double the price - have double weight but thousand times more fun and full siund experience - it‘s worth every penny.cheers.

But its got a 4 zone MIDI controller and audio interface, its got a (sort of) synth with portamento and a filter, its got proper audio ins, its got better sounding wurlitzers (which is important to me) and its got a pitch stick. BTW I'm a nord electro6D owner too! Nord has the sample synth library (meh) and the option to designate L/R outputs to different sounds, but I don't see any other advantage the electro has over the YC61. I suppose Nord has the 'vibe' effect too, which makes everything sound nice and vintage...ish. But I'm curious to hear how Yamahas VCM stuff compares. Oh, The Yc61 also has more comprehensive effects control (rate and amount) as apose to electro's universal control for each effect - which iv found to be a bit limiting, but not worth the upgrade to a stage 3

JRussoC I own a reface YC and together with an external leslie pedal is great! I agree with Nord (and here we have “all in one” concept just like YC61: elecro or stage doesn’t matter! Great!) and Hammond. Sk1, ok but SK5 is probably the best after the old B3. For me the YC61 (from the youtube videos!) does not happening! Sorry. Today I was just listening to the iPad IK Multimedia organ App and I was blown away!!! After only one minute! (Check it out if you didn’t!) I watched basically all YC 61 youtube videos and I felt almost...nothing! But yes, the thing is, I like the Nord “all in one” idea for live performances! Unfortunately (and I am an Yamaha guy : P85, MODX 8 and 6, Reface DX and YC, MX49, an old S03 etc... ) as much as I wanted to like the YC61 ....I don’t. I would still buy a Nord Electro! Or stage, but ok, the price is higher ... I am not happy to say that!

@@DrDAAD yes, I'm sure that with a external Leslie it gets a lot better, in principle, making a acceptable hammond sound isn't hard, the leslie part is. @@patsaxon5284 I have the VR730. The waterfall keys are a MUST for good organ technique, but the effects section and on-the-fly modification of the organ sounds is not nearly as good as the Nord design or this Yamaha design. And I REALLY hate the distortion on the VR730. Try turning it while playing and it goes from 0 overdrive to like 3 or 4 with no gradual change. If all you want is a tiny bit of dirt, you can’t get that. Also, if you save a registration with the distortion effect in it, the volume slider setting is ignored when you call it up. The volume is full on LOUD.
