The 1.2 update made me buy the YC61…hands down one of the biggest best OS updates I’ve seen in any keyboard! I’m a B3 player from the 70’s so a 15lb B3 and Leslie are very inviting! The only short coming of the organ section is not having the high trigger point for the organ…I’m praying that will be included in a future update…please! Also nice playing!

Lots of really good stuff in this update, but the main thing is that new “Studio” rotary sim. Glad they finally fixed that, now 2 years after the YC was introduced at NAMM 2020.

From an organ standpoint they took this to another level. 😃

I never thought I would find a better sim than my Neo Vent but now Im actually considering selling it.

now that I sold the NE5D this is growing on me good review shows the depth Yamaha took on the organ top end tone in the higher registra

Once again, Steve from Featherlight knocks it out of the park with another home run review. I’m so grateful for how clear and knowledgeable his reviews are. On top of that he is an extremely good speaker. He really comes prepared, no fumbling over words. He is obviously a very talented player as well but he doesn’t feel the need to show off like so many others on KZread do to the point where the video becomes more about how fast they can play using pyrotechnics instead of the product itself. Add to that when they are playing that quickly and switching patches and effects, you don’t have time to even hear what you are supposed to be listening to from the instrument in the first place ! @@thesoundsmith I don’t know man, I think this whole obsession with pyrotechnics has been around for a while. Probably goes back to Emerson Lake and Palmer and the bad part of the whole Prog scene as well as the horrible 70’s fusion era whereby everybody that ever played with Miles was signed to a major label and made boring records for the most part. Made you wonder if they actually ever learned anything about space and minimalism from Miles!

The classic rotary sounds as an old live-set with two little “lavalier” mics. The studio rotary as a full stereo three condenser micking

The FM synthesis is awesome. FM has always just needed physical controls to make it accessible.

Thank you! I purchased mine a month ago after watching and listening to many videos including two of yours. I’m running mine into a Berlinger 12 channel board to Yamaha HS 8 studio speakers. I’ve downloaded and installed the firmware updates. I’m not getting the full sound I expected. Perhaps it’s my room ? Are you running this through an effect pedal or software (Omnisphere, etc.) to enhance the sound?

Nice ..Does it have pipe organ sounds ?

Are there any options for useable church pipe organs? Not gritty or driven/cutting B3 sounds but more traditional pipe organs? Love this video - thanks for doing it! My church is considering this as a big upgrade to our current setup.

Yeah, the YC88 has become my main rig for our worship team now and replaced our Nord Stage because of the flexibility and larger sound library. Check out Yamaha's SoundMondo page for a huge library of additional sounds for the YC series, its a great resource and a lot of user content sharing as well. soundmondo.yamahasynth.com

Has anyone tried using the Neo Mini Vent II with the organ sound and see if it makes it fuller, real sounding?

Hi there, are you able to play different sounds based on the velocity you play a note on the YC 88? For example I have a basic Rhodes comping sound but want to use a brass sound when I play loud, like you did in the video, but how do you actually program this?

I used a combination of S Curve velocities and Offset. Turned one offset most of the way up and the other most of the way down. Its a lot for a comments section but, I will try to make a video detailing that.

88 key version is weighted keys 73 version is balanced weighted keys so better I feel for the organ and piano

Can you globally set the organ patches to come from the right output, or can you pan the organ (per patch) to the right side?

The YC series are not set up like their other workstations where you can build a "Mix" so you can't pan the sounds to separate outputs. However, you can 'control' external keyboards with the fairly extensive zone/master settings and those settings can send MIDI Pan position info. Hopefully someone else can chime in here If they have figured out a way to so.

I just purchased the YamahaYC88 and currently have Ver .02.1. I see there have been 2 updates to the firmware. Do I follow the first video you did in May 11, 2021 or do I follow the second video dated Mar 1, 2022 in order to update to firmware V1.20? I noticed the updates are different. The first video you leave YC backup.YOA along with the 8T250S_.PGM in the flash drive but not the second video. Than you in advance for your help.

You can use the latest firmware 1.20.1 as it will update your YC to the latest and will include ALL the previous updates. While your USB key can have other files on it, the important thing is that the .pgm file ( Firmware Update ) is located on the root directory of the USB key ( No Folder )

As a dedicated aficionado of software instruments (including my beloved VB3 Hammond plugin) this is the first time in many years that i've lusted over any hardware instrument. The Nord Electro 6D has been a close contender, but the YC, especially with that new Studio rotary, has rather pushed the Nord into the shadows. One question - can the organ, Keys A and Keys B each receive external MIDI input (i.e. playback from a DAW) on separate MIDI channels? This would be a deal breaker...

The YC series is not multitimbral like a Motif or Moxf would be, it can only receive one one channel at a time however, the organ/keyA/keyB sections can be assigned different zones/split points and each can be set to respond to that incoming MIDI data and key range you set up.

@@Featherlightstudio Ah, OK. Thanks for the reply. The zones would probably be too small to be workable that way, especially if doing a full-on piano part accompanied by organ. It still gives the option to record the MIDI of each instrument one at a time and render each one to audio though, so not a total disaster!

@@Featherlightstudio That is quite a downer, as pretty much all clonewheels and software organs can receive 3 Independent midi channels. Without that you can’t really call it a clonewheel but a gimped down 1 manual organ wannabe. That said, cudous to Yamaha to finally after like 3 decades of keyboards and workstations to make a usable leslie sim. People have been missing that

Will the new manufactured machines come with the firmware already installed?

This would depend on where they were in the manufacturing cycle and when the stock was delivered to the retailer. Pretty hard to say really but its pretty straightforward to update.

The YC Analog input is really just analog mixer designed to combine external keyboards or additional mixers with the output of the YC for convenience in your live setup. The built in audio interface on the YC is just for the onboard digital sound engines, not for external audio.

I am trying to decide between this and a Hammond or the Roland VR730. How much closer does the new firmware get the Yamaha to the Hammond? For me, I need Hammond, Electric Piano, some piano and a little synth.

Really close! But organ tone is like guitar tone, deeply individual and you may want to take a trip to a music store to try them out in person for such a big purchase like this.

Hi if my YC is two updates behind can I directly install 1.2 or do I need to do prior ones first? My version is 1.02. Just got it yesterday.

In Yamaha's official release it says "This update is applicable to the following version: YC88, YC73, YC61 with firmware versions earlier than V1.20" So yes, you can directly to the newest version 1.20

@@danielcolfer4671 The 1.2 update includes all the sounds/functions introduced in the 1.1 update. The download includes a file with the complete data list that you can print if you like.

@@danielcolfer4671 The new update doesn't take anything away from the previous versions and ALL the pianos from the previous version are in this update. Both the new pianos AND the new rotary organ emulations are included. Just checked on mine and the Nashville is there in the list of available pianos under the red rocker switch when you step through them.

Just getting back from NAB and jumping into it in detail.

Received YC73 last week. For some reason, I've tried 3 different new Sandisk USB sticks and the keyboard is not recognizing any of them. Want to update to new firmware. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try re-formating the new USB sticks to FAT 32 and then drag and drop the new 8T250S_ .pgm file onto it with nothing else.

Hit the 'Menu' button, scroll down to 'Version Info' and press down on the scroll wheel to see the current version of the firmware.

These boards may sound great, but for the older keyboardist, they are WAY heavier than needed. A shame, I would have bought one, but can't carry it anymore. And Hammond does not care about pianos and EPs I wound up with a Roland VR-730, the sounds aren't as good, but they're all there...

Heh Michael, the download file is compressed so you will have to unzip it first. Then look for the .pgm file...thats the one you want to drag onto your USB stick. It REALLY helps if you start with a newly formatted, blank USB stick, much easier.
