Yamaha XT250 6 to 12 Volt Conversion Part 1 - Step by Step guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yamaha XT 250 - 6 to 12 Volt conversion: This is the start of a new series, and today we look at a simple way to convert from 6 to 12 Volts. We also discuss the 2 other options you have for improving the lighting on your Yamaha XT.
This first project has been split into 3 parts or episodes to make it easier and simpler to follow along. If you are a complete beginner or have no maintenance or mechanical experience, it’s probably best you start from the beginning…. Part 1.
However, some of you may already have a good level of mechanical competence, so you may choose to skip Part 1 and go straight to Parts 2/3.
The Yamaha XT series will cover many different topics, from simple servicing and maintenance to more complex modifications and restoration.
This is a new series for me, so it is important you let me know, if you enjoy the episodes and if you find them useful / helpful, so please Subscribe and press the Bell notification button (This will help the channel grow and develop), and of course you will be notified when the next episode is uploaded.
Thank you, Carl

    Learnt something today that these are 6V systems no wonder someone butchered the bike i have. Also nice presentation and very lucky you can get the OEM parts still were i live even yamaha dealers aren't much help and sadly anything out of Europe/UK its about x2-4 times our dollar so its no wonder so many old bikes end up as scrap where i live

Question: to increase brightness and reduce power usage, i'd like to replace all bulbs with LED's. What is your opinion about this please? Cheers from Australia.

    Hi Your videos were some of best I’ve ever seen describing things slowly and in such detail. I’ve got a 77 XT500 but everything in your bike is same as mine. It’s hard to drive at night with headlights and gauges so dim. I wanted to get all the Kedo parts you listed ( except lock cylinder part ) I tried looking up each part number but couldn’t find specifically. I found their home website and awesome catalog with what looked like every part I’d ever want for my bike if needed! But it wasn’t in English snd when I wrote to company they said they didn’t have an English version and also don’t ship to USA OR CANADA? Anyhow I haven’t been able to drive my favorite bike for almost five years. It needed a new engine which I found last summer snd just put in this summer. The bikes all apart and I’m going to redo a lot of it but before I start I’d like to get it converted to 12volt. Can you help me find a way to get exactly the parts you said I needed in the states or somewhere I could get them shipped to USA? Thanks very much! Todd I hope you can help me out.

    Hi Michael, I would have thought that as the USA and Canada are many times bigger than Germany that you would find the parts much easier. I think a great place for you to ask this question would be on a local XT forum in north America... I would imagine there will be several... and probably many owners that have already done this conversation. Let me know how you get on. Beat wishes with your project. The 500 is a great bike 👍

    Are you sure that the 6v or whatever it puts out will provide sufficient power to charge the battery in the long run? All my conversions have always involved replacing the stator light coil and for the most part the flywheel. That's normally the actual conversion as I see it.

    Hi Elizabeth, the TLR200 is basically a XR200 in a different frame so the 6v to 12v conversion I did on the XT should work just fine. You will need to change everything from 6v to 12v don’t forget that. Also you could use led bulbs in the tail light and indicators to give yourself a better headlamp output ( don’t use led for that) just a regular 35w/12v halogen. Check out the xr200 forums for owners who have also done this. For example www.thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/1228001-new-guy-xr200r-6v-to-12v/

    Hi I did the 12v conversion exactly how you did it but my battery runs out of charge, I checked and it’s only putting out 12.7v at peak rpm so I’m taking that as my stator is not in great condition, I’m thinking I might just go back to 6v. What do you think?

  • @justthewayitis

    @justthewayitis

    3 ай бұрын

    Hi , without physically checking what you have done to your motorbike its really hard to advise you. If your bike is EXACTLY the same as the one I worked on, and you installed EXACTLY the same products as I did, and you have thoroughly checked all wire connections especially the ground / earth circuits…. Then maybe your observation is correct - Stator output might be an issue. However, my initial thought is that something somewhere is causing the issue and would suggest thoroughly checking the wiring harness and all connections for corrosion and poor contact as this is the more likely cause. Then if all of the above is ok, disconnect the headlamp bulb (this draws the most current) and see what the battery voltage is at idle and 4,500 rpm ? have you installed the correct headlamp bulb ? I hope this helps, Carl
