Wow! If you made more I would buy one. I’m sure others would too.

Nice work. I also removed the starters from my bikes and fitted a spin-on filter but it never occurred to me to put it where the starter used to be. If only Yamaha had fitted an electric starter that worked and an oil filter that actually filtered the oil. As you mention, another bike made its debut in 1969 and it had both of those things. It also had a clutch that's actuator didn't get in the way of a bigger trans sprocket because it was on the other side and no shock absorber springs to break because it had a cush-drive in the rear wheel, and a crank that's rods unbolted from it and that could be rebuilt any number of times without a press. That said and for all its shortcomings, the XS-650 remains the greatest bike ever made.

Thanks David, it was a solution that suited my needs at the time for my bobber. The sump plate spin on filters while being a good substitute for the original and additionally are best suited to those who retain their starter motors are easily damaged if struck by anything. Sadly I've nearly sold all my xs650 stuff now, just thought I'd put it out there as an alternative for people to consider...

Ive been considering something like this for a future project, but id like to keep it as a strainer perhaps use one of those cleanable filters like a wire mesh filter, might be less of an issue on suction side with a high flow pump.

Considering the greater capacity and fineness of filtration, mightn't this make the primary filter redundant?
