Yamaha Virago xv1100 Stuck Air Fuel Mix Needle removal...showing how it's done

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

One of the air/fuel mix needles was corroded on the recently acquired xv1100 Virago since it had sat out in a guy's yard for years. With a little patience, WD-40, and some heat...sometimes they can be persuaded to come out so the carbs are not ruined.

Thanks man 👍. Yep, just a little heat to expand the aluminum and then let it cool and contract a few times seems to work well to crunch up the oxide so the WD-40 (or other penetrating fluid) can get into the threads and free things up.

I saw a similar tip using candle-wax . The story-was that as it melted , the thinner 'elements' penetrated-first, pulling/wicking the thicker-component of the wax into the 'stuck' areas . I haven't used-it yet, I might try it on my lawn-mower-handle (the old-fashioned wooden-handled push-mower ) The captive-nut part has frozen , can't replace the broken 'T' part of the handle . People laugh when they see me using these old-mowers, I mention that they never run-out of gas ! Another tip for worn float-bowl-valves (where they are cast-into the housing or you just need a quick-fix ) is to take a small ball-bearing and tap-it onto the seat-hole, until the deformed-hole is perfectly round again , works-well for old 'Bing'-type BMW-carbs . 👍. I’ve never heard of using wax, but I can see how it might work. Lol ! I too have one of the old manual push movers and use it every once in a while. We call it the “Leave It To Beaver” mower as they used the same type on this old television show from when I was a young kid, lol. Works great until you run over a small stick that fell from a tree and for sure gives you a good workout.

Hey man ! It does take some fine tuning to get them to start quick like most of mine do (I’ve been messing with these old bikes for years so I’ve had lots of practice, lol !). The most important things are to be sure the carbs are clean, synchronized good, the float heights are set right (fuel height to the seam of the bowl), and the air fuel mix is adjusted correctly. It is also important to have a well charged battery as these will crank on a low battery, but it might not be strong enough to maintain the voltage needed to get the TCI to fire consistently. I also run Iridium plugs (removed the resistors from the plug wires as the Iridium version has a resistor in the plug) that focus the spark on the tiny little iridium tip to give a nice strong spark.
