Yamaha Revstar RSS20 Metal Review

This is my review of the Yamaha Revstar RSS20, specifically as a metal guitar! When I bought this, I played this up against a lot of Gibson guitars, and some PRS models, and I thought for the money and craftsmanship, this is a clear metal winner. If you like classic rock n roll style guitars, that have the bite and punch for metal riffs, this is a guitar well worth buying!
The audio in this video is all raw “in the room” from my phone mic, because I wanted to do something more genuine and raw to change things up. If you would like to hear how it sounds in pro tools direct in, check out the chug video I have of this on my shorts feed!

So I finally got the Yamaha Revstar RSS20 and BOY DOES IT SLAY! First of all , I would like to thank @MetalThrashingBuddy for helping me make the final decision. Now the irony of it was that I also ended buying the Flash Green because the Hot Merlot was not in stock and the Vintage White was not speaking to me. But I sure was surprised when UPS delivered this beast to me. First of all I was impressed with the quality of the Gig bag, really sturdy well made, could easily cost around 50-70 euros, but the great surprise was the beautiful sparkle green of this guitar that looks so much fuller in reality. Also I was pleasantly surprised with the weight, mine is 3.75 kg. Immediately I recognized the high quality fretwork and how easy it is to play all over the fretboard, the neck thickness is just right, actually it could have been even a bit thicker for my personal preferences. I own several guitars that are in the 1000 to 1500 euros range and this Yamaha does not feel any lesser than my Korean made instruments. Actually I could say that it feel even better than my EC1000 Deluxe in some aspects. The pickups are just fine, not too hot not too wimpy, I think they are in the sweet spot for all things rock, hard rock or metal ( keep in mind I am mostly an old school metal guy) . But it handles Exodus, Metallica and Slayer riffs just fine. I find the boost to work very well for solos. Overall I cannot recommend enough this instrument as steady workhorse for the guitar player that wants quality without braking the bank. I think some guitar players will stay away from this guitar because the way it looks, quite unconventional off-shape sg style guitar with a bold paint job. But if you are willing to slap the guitar industry and refuse to buy from Big G and the acolytes that are inflating the market with guitars that offer only 50% of what the Yamaha Rss20 is giving you, then I say you WON! Also it does not help that Yamaha the Company is making promotional videos of this guitar aimed at people in retirement homes or dudes that look like hipster squares. Keep the metal flame burning \m/ !

I use it for metal and it’s awesome! I also used it the other to play some STP funny enough, and it was awesome! All around great guitar, almost like a bit more high ranged Les Paul as far as its versatility!

Great Review, I am so glad somene finally made a metal review for this. I am also thinking about getting one, but I have a huge problem with the colors. So far the Hot Merlot one seems to be to one thats more my vibe, but i really wish Yamaha would have offered a silverburst, matt black or just a one color without the racing stripes (not everyone likes motorcycles or formula 1 ). On the other hand the value for this instrument is crazy you get SS frets great electronics, a gigbag and really god craftsmanship. I will let you know if I decide and pull the trigger on one. Thank you!

Hey thanks so so much for the great comment! And I’m so glad I could help with this because I had wanted one of these for a while, but couldn’t find any metal reviews either! I’m really with you on the colors. I wanted an all black one but those were back ordered online, and I didn’t really like the white one either. The only color they had in store was green, so I had to go see for myself, and honestly, in person, it was absolutely beautiful. I’m always wearing black and playing darker guitars at shows typically, but after buying this, I actually think it’s a lot more unique, while it’s more dark also than pictures portray. But I’m with you for sure! I kinda think it’s cool that it’s this not heavy metal looking paint color and style, but it absolutely shreds! Please let me know if you do grab one, that would be awesome and I do highly highly recommend it as a metal guitar!!!! Rock on and have fun!

Excellent review. Many of the reviews for this are on channels where Yamaha gave the person a guitar to review, but yours is honest. I appreciate it. I play primarily Stoner and proto-doom (Sabbath, Kyuss, Electric Wizard). Can these hand that sound? Are you alos in Portland? Did you pick that up at Five Star Guitars? I've seen that they carry these. I'd be all over the Flash Green model, but the racing stripe bugs me for some reason. Taht is definitely my favorite color, though.

Thanks so much for saying that! I started this channel specifically for that reason. Watching too many KZreadrs who are paid/given things and not giving a realistic review. So I started just reviewing what I buy and genuinely rating it on the value of buying it with your own hard earned money! Haha I imagine this guitar would be great for what you do. I bought this because my favorite guitar is my Gibson Les Paul 50s standard, and just like that guitar, I wanted more guitars that have classic rock style, but can do everything from stoner to indie to metal, and this one definitely can do that for a great price point. And actually I’m in Washington state! About an hour and half from Portland. I bought my Les Paul at the Portland guitar center funny enough. P.S.-the guitar is so beautiful in all the other ways, I don’t even notice the racing stripes when I look at it lol

@sams.4388 thanks for saying that! I’m no longer in a band now. I decided to focus more on family and just making music and content for fun still, but if you want to check out the band I was in its Dark Harbor. They have some new music coming out that I recorded on and they will be hitting Portland soon too. Great guys and great music. As for me, I’ll be posting my solo work on this channel here shortly as I get some music videos done for it!

Hey thanks for reaching out! Great question, glad you asked! This weekend or at the end of this week, I’m going to be changing the strings on this and setting it up for drop B to use in my band. I think I’ll make a quick short or video about how it feels/how it was to set it up! So I’ll have a more specific answer then! As of now, I can say that the stock strings on it are VERY LIGHT. I haven’t tuned down past Drop D with these strings. Even then, the strings are light enough on it that I was like oh damn, these are lighter strings than usual haha. So I wouldn’t dare tune to it until my strings are changed. Based on the sound of the pick ups though, this thing is going to be an absolute monster in drop c/drop b when set up properly. I could definitely picture myself ripping some killswitch engage on this and nailing the tones with it!

Awesome! I'll sub to hear you posting more about that. I plan on playing some melodeath and doomy black sabbath stuff on it. This guitar for being a double cut gives a modern SG vibe without the neck dive haha. @@MetalThrashingBuddy

Awesome thanks so much for the sub! And yes exactly! Haha, I went in with the intention of really hoping to like the SG because I do love all the Gibson shapes and styles, but as a guitar I was gonna be playing shows with, that neck dive and super light body on the SG, I absolutely couldn’t justify. So when I felt the balance and moderate weight to this while still having that super classic style and look (let alone the great tone) this was a landslide winner! It would be a great choice in your case I think!

@@klipkop5334 welp, this is what happened-I enjoyed the sound of this guitar playing it on songs in standard and drop D so I kept my LTD in drop C and left this with the original string set up on it. I wanted to re string and tune down, but most of the songs I play for fun are in standard or Drop D so I’m leaving it for now! I can say, that based on the output of the pickups, I imagine it will absolutely sound great in drop C for metalcore (which is why I initially bought it). But for now it stays in old school tuning 😂

I would love to say yes because I love this guitar so much! It would be a really really nice guitar for a beginner. Heck, you wouldn’t even really have to worry about upgrading from it in my opinion unless you wanted to. I do think that Yamaha has a Revstar model that is in the 500 dollar range rather than the 800 dollar range? I don’t remember. But this would last you a long time and be suitable for any situation for a long time. If you’re looking to spend less, I highly recommend an LTD ec-256 as well. About 400 dollars and built well and sound great for a beginner range guitar. It all depends of you want to start with something that is a bit more basic, or start with something a little bit more fancy to handle all your needs for a long time. If you got this rev star, you would be set for a long time.
