Yamaha Reface DX Part 1 - Unboxing & First impressions

I finally got the keyboard i've been dreaming of for the past year or so. The Yamaha Reface DX is of the Reface series and is a modern remake of the Yamaha DX 7, a synthesizer which was prominent in many music bands and artists of the 1980s.
I've been looking forward to this a lot not only because i've seen it in action but i've been wanting to get back into music creation on the Commodore Amiga as well as other music making applications.
In this video I do an unboxing and first impression of the Yamaha Reface DX and discover that there is a world of things to learn, hence why i've split this into a multi part mini series.

Quoted from: www.musicradar....
"FM synthesis has been experiencing something of a renaissance lately, largely due to the popularity of soft synths such as Native Instruments' FM8, Primal Audio's FM4 and Digital Suburban's Dexed.
These authentic sounding, feature rich, backwards compatible soft synths have ensured that FM synthesis has stayed relevant for modern day producers. Save for the MOD7 engine in Korg's Kronos and Nord keeping FM alive in their Lead/ Stage models, the big players (and particularly Yamaha) have largely abandoned FM in favour of sample- based synthesis.
It's a real shame, as the only thing really holding back FM synths of old (including the brilliant SY77/99 and FS1R) was the lack of hands-on control. The DX200 module went some way to putting things right but it still required a computer to get the best from it.
Fast forward to today and we have the first new DX with a keyboard since 1988's DX11! This is big news and something folks have been waiting for for a long time, but will it address the key deficiencies of old FM, in particular the lack of hands-on control?
The Reface DX is built into the same high-quality enclosure as the other Reface models. This time though, it's a browny colour like the original DX7 but the similarities stop there - this new DX has more in common with the DX100 and so it features a mini-keyboard (three octaves compared to the DX100's four) and also uses four operators (FM-speak for oscillators)."

    As somebody who has never meddled with synthesizers before, I would recommend this. i've heard that the user interface on this is way easier than the original DX7 was/is .. I cannot comment nor compare as i've never tried the DX7 but I'm getting to grips with this interface fairly quickly :o)

    Very groovy! - will be a fun toy to play with Im sure. Will also be interesting if you can compose music with your Amiga. :) I think it is amazing that Yamaha themselves posted a comment on your channel to say thanks for using their machine, perhaps you thought it was a fan? Its them! Imagine if Sony left a message saying "thanks for using our walkmans" - that would be so cool. Looking forward to your shows with this device.

    "I've never messed with a synth before" Oh man, you picked quite a tough form of synthesis to start with (FM) XD However, if you start with editing existing patches first, and then use the Reface DX's 4 operators all as outputs (squares) as the formula, and just do subtractive that way, using the FX section and 4-oscillator subtractive setup, then you could start using one operator at a time to mess with how modulation works (setting an operator to be a circle, feeding into another operator)... now I'm just rambling haha Seeing how long it's been since you posted this, you've probably already learned a lot about synthesis X3 and had a ton of fun with the DX! It's the only physical synth I actually own (with keys... I do have a KORG Kaossilator Mini, and tons of other types of small toys), I mostly use software synths like Harmor, Redux (Renoise), Sytrus, Kontakt... Either way, I love seeing someone getting so excited to use this synth! I know I get excited anytime I'm gonna play mine X)

    Its crazy how much i have in common with you, from vintage hifi and gaming, to turntables and spectrum analyzers, and now synth keyboards lol. I decided to get the cs first though, i luv all those sliders and tinkering while playing. Im surprised you didn’t get the cs first, are you not a huge amiga fan girl lol. Have you ever heard of the yamaha cs-01? The original from back in the early 80s. That little analog synth is awesome. I’ve wanted one for years but couldn’t find any around me and refused to buy one off eBay from china. I suggest you check out your local used listings and stores for one, you might find one for cheap, there the next best thing to a cs reface and possibly a lot cheaper.

    This Reface DX was an impulsive buy, I loved what it could do and just went for it, even though you tell yourself "lets look at the others" there's that inner kid in you pulling your arm saying "Okay you saw it, now get the DX" , thats what happened lol btw, the next i'm saving up for is the CS for the very reason you mentioned, i'm a huge Amiga fan girl :oD. Once I do i'm planning to do a video on it like this also :o)

    nice little synth reface dx...there are also old patches converted from tx81z or dx21/27 (four op synths)...in gaming history 4op synthesizers has a long tradition from arcade cabinets to msdos soundcards or sega megadrive. however, if you need a good synthesizer capable of doing fm stuff i cannot suggest you to give a try to yamaha montage, 8 operators fmx engine with spectral skirt and resonance control at operator level, reads dx7 patches, and with motion control engine you can modulate fm parameters in realtime or seq based and via envelope follower you can use also external signals to control fm. best of all has 128 fm voices plus 128 stereo sample based voices like amiga chip (only 4 low quality), reface cannot import samples and use them with fm. PS montage operates also like a soundcard and midi controller, you can hook up it via usb on to logic or cubase and use it to record midi and digital audio like the focusrite scarlet, it has a great audio card inside derived from hi end yamaha digital mixers called PAC technology (pure audio circuit).

    I still haven't bought the Synth that i have had my eyes on because I'm still arguing with myself over the price. I kinda wish Korg would bring a new version of the DS8, which was their version of a DX7, however it came with only 4 FM operators instead of 6, like the DX7, because back then Yamaha held the patent for 6 FM Operator Frequency Modulation Synthesizers. The Korg one had some very interesting sound capabilities too and some performance sliders that allowed you to manipulate sounds during playing a lot easier than the DX7.

    home early from work and what do i see? Madija on a nice synth. i "am impatient to see some musical creations in the future. do you already have a midi interface for your amiga then? i am also a little bit interested about the other (usb)midiport, because i have got a medely DD401 drumkit which has only that. and many new keys dont have this (mini) din version. wonder if that could be hooked on old midi someway. small keys still, but this way you can fit some more nice synts in your room. maybe one full size midi keyboard to control them all. haha

    Hahah :o) I actually already have a basic Alesis MIDI controller with full sized velocity keys which I can link to this and use that instead, it works great just as expected. The USB I think is a built in MIDI device, so rather than having an external one connecting to MIDI ports, there is just the USB end.. whcih is convenient but not when you have an Amiga with a MIDI interface (yes one of the very few things I saved back in the day was the Midi Interface haha) It took me a while to save up for this lol, I think it maybe this is as far as i'll go :o)

    Surely you must mean a lot of mid eighties music was done with the DX-7 type FM sound, because before that in the early eighties it was analogue synth in Europe/Roland 808 USA and by the late eighties pretty much all sample based instruments like the iconic Ensoniq Mirage which that song Good Life by Innercity at the turn of the decade used stock sounds from the Mirage. I don't think music could change much more in one decade than between the very end of the seventies to the very start of the nineties

  • @MsMadLemon

    @MsMadLemon

    Well I just wasn't being specific, I just said the 80s which is still correct ;o)) It was still a huge chunk of the mid 80s I believe as I think the Dx7 was produced first in 1983? not exactly sure on the year. Indeed there was a huge change in that decade, it's quite amazing and one can see why a lot of people love the 80s music as a whole.

  • @planetretro4581

    @planetretro4581

    I agree it is not exact and there is plenty of overlap which makes it great. The Pet Shop Boys were also around in the mid 80s and only used a Fairlight sampler based set up mostly and plenty of FM based synths like the DX were of course used in the 90s too. Betty Boo even did her first album on an Amiga 500 +sampler initially even though she could have done that technically since 1986 onwards and of course Paul Hardcastle used a bit of everything for his number 1 Nineteen right in the middle of the decade :)
