    The best thing about this video: No gimmicks, no needless talking; just a real world sonic comparison of the Reface CP against the instruments it was designed to emulate. A suggestion to those who tune in: Listen to the audio without watching the video, it might challenge your ears. Also, take into consideration the actual instruments used in this demo probably weren't the actual instruments that were sampled for the Reface, so expect some tonal differences in that regard. Even so, this is a great demo. Thanks for posting, I really needed to hear this.

    Ehm... no... In the reface the rhodes does not sound like a rhodes, the clavi does not sound like a clavi, the CP80 does not sound like the real one, and the acoustic piano definitely does not sound like a stage piano. You can ear huge differences listening with a smartphone too :-)))) Very poor samples. No details. No resonances. The wurlitzer seems to be the only effective one. But the realtime effects panel is really good. If you compare this reface to a Kurzweil Forte, or a Dexibell stage, or a Yamaha CP1, etc. Yes, the reface is just a toy. Obviously it's good for its price

The player can tell and the player can feel the limitations or facilities of the instrument. Seems pretty good for the price though. The appeal to me of the Reface CP is the "artificial" style of the sounds. It's got enough of the character of the real thing, but has an electronic vibe going, too, that's just great for FX/ambient/experimental stuff. I can't get those sounds out of an actual electric piano, etc. A perfect companion to the OP-1 for me.

    To each their own. I've heard acoustic pianos that sound just like this. I think it's more of a matter of personal taste. Everyone seem to have a big boner for the Nord Pianos....I hate them. I hear a false metallic ringing in all of them. I have the CP and use a Roland A-37 controller. The Roland doesn't have piano action...but it makes for a great light weigh combo for small gigs and practices

    The out-of-tune/phased sound you often hear with a CP-70 or -80 usually has to do with the piano being paired with a chorus effect like the Boss CE-1 to thicken the sound up (since you had one less string for every key).

    For years pianos and organs have been emulated with sampling or modelling to a more than acceptable level to where the differences are purely academic, even if you're making a recording. Not saying the feel of playing a real clav, hammond, rhodes etc. can ever be replicated but in terms of sound and gigging these comparisons just plain show the emulations are more than good enough with today's technology. Both the Reface CP and YC are as good as they can reasonably be expected to be and it's astounding they come with minikeys, the other alternatives being the grossly over-featured Clavias and Yamaha CPs series and YC61 which are cool if you want that level of control but most real players actually don't. We can have a nice full size board with simple controls lik and stomp.box like effects like on these Reface and no damn screen for 1200 dollars tops. A nice simple board where you can split the vintage sounds and just play in your band like it's a real instrument. No screens, no menus. Crumar is trying but getting it wrong with spending all their money on modelling pianos and rotary encoders. Time for vintage sound keyboards with just a few controls.

    So... you're using a Midi controller midi'ed to the Reface? Is the piano patch on Reface called "Hidden Acoustic Piano"?

  • @marcoballa

    @marcoballa

    7 жыл бұрын

    yes, a weighted keyborad is used as controller for reface. the "hidden acoustic piano" is a sound present on the reface but not selectable with the cursor (set the sound selector BETWEEN any two settings and switch on the reface)

    ciao! as from REface CP manual: it.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/6/438816/reface_en_om_b0.pdf page 5: "[USB] terminal (page 39) For connecting a computer or a smart device such an iPhone or iPad by using a USB 1.1 or 2.0 cable. MIDI messages can be both transmitted and received via this terminal" maybe (I'm not expert) you can also use the standard MIDI connector on the Reface, with a USB to midi converter cable

    entrambi (gli originali) hanno tasti in legno (tranne qualche esemplare di rhodes) con meccanica molto particolare. quindi sì, in un certo senso sono tasti "pesati", ma nulla a che vedere col tasto di un pianoforte acustico :-)

    @@dirtyfatstaff l'unico, tra gli strumenti vintage contemplati nel reface, che ha tasto pesato vero è il CP70/80 che di fatto ha la meccanica derivata da un grand piano Yamaha. @@marcoballa i see it being useful as my band of which i am the guitarist who wants occasional simple keys will shove everything through effects (and on a budget) for these electronica sounds. I think its probably quite wrong for a traditional jazz EP player. Plus i would love some decent aco pianos, i dont think the hidden is good, and even if it were its that really bright Yamaha pop grand. Any reduced key count digi pianos? Bosens and Steinways and jazzy uprights? I would love a version for that in weighted 4 octaves or something.
