To those who are confused: A bike can be two things at once. It can be a solid beginner bike and yet not that inspired on track for someone like me who has over 100 days on track and club racing experience. The R7 is not as fun as an RS660 on track. That does not mean it’s a bad motorcycle. Both are true.

The only person confused here is you!! This is perhaps the worst, most confused take on this bike I have seen. You literally spend the whole session tying yourself up in logic knots. This bike is everything Yamaha says it is and your riding impressions only confirm that - yet somewhere along the line you decided it should be a track weapon and then fein disappointment when it isn’t. “The engine feels just like an MT07” - wow what a shocker!! “The bike feels a little squirrelly” - leaves bike on road tires!! “It’s not a real R bike” - but the R3 is? “The RS660 would smoke this” - at 50% more expensive, 30% more power and 100% sticker rubber. I could go on - but you get the point. ….. or do you?

Yup. It's a great beginner sport bike for street use. It's an MT07 for people who prefer an aggressive sportbike posture and styling. It's really not a good track option for an experienced rider. To be sure, Yammie is clear about his "it can be both things". But yeah, it's just not a real track bike, unless maybe you're a beginner. I feel this was pretty clear from the get go, though. It's based on the CP2 platform (fun, extremely good street engine) but it's got no real top end power. It's damn fun at low rpm, stoplight to stoplight, but pretty meh if you're racing people at highway speeds. Shouldn't expect anything else. It objectively is *not* a supersport.

The difference isn't as big as you might think. Maybe 3 seconds per lap between an R7 and a literbike if I had to guess. Generally about 2 seconds between a 600 and a liter for a given rider if I remember correctly. Aside from that some days you ride better than others. So one day you might turn 1:92 on a liter only to go out a month later and turn 1:92 on the 600. Obviously that doesn't make them the same class of bike. Just different day, maybe different temperature, and in this case he was on some very street biased tires.

What this bike ever supposed to be a "real supersport"? I thought it was more like something in between. Just.. "sport" so to speak. I don't think anyone thinks of it as a successor to a R6. Or something similar. I do feel maybe they should have given it a different name than "R"7. when I first heard about it, I would have initially thought OMGZ A 700CC R6 successor! But once you looked at the details learned that it wasn't, which is totally okay. The R7 is its own thing. It would have been similarly confusing if there was a bike named HONDA CBR700R, or a SUZUKI GSX700 (I took one of the "R's" off) Or if Honda took their CB650R and made a fairing clad CBR650R Maybe if it was a R7S. .. RS7.... MT-07RR I remember there was a Yamaha R6S. But I think that was basically an older R6 Maybe the only thing that's wrong, if there is anything wrong at all, is its name. Maybe should have named the Yamaha Steve, or Yamaha Yamcha, Krillin...... I'm happy that the R7 exist. I'm kind of sad a YZF-R6 doesn't anymore.

@No_Name no man, is not about the type of bike he is talking about ( i think), im also on that train, the problem with the R7 is it's price, exactly for what was written up there, it cost the same as a Z900, a 4 cylinder bike 100+HP and tech. The R7 is on the edge of what you will pay for a "end of the road" powerful bike, so you have to ask to yourself if is worth buying a supersport that is not a supersport but a road-city oriented sport bike, or a proper powerful road-city oriented naked bike like a Z900...i like the R7 more than the Z900 and i like sport fairing bikes, but the Z900 is the best package for the money that's for sure...but again, it all depends on what are you gonna be doing with the bike...

@manideepreddy5152 First, I'd change the front brake pads from stock to at least the EBC HH sintered pads. Much less brake fade and a much nicer bite to them. Getting steel braided lines, the hordpower intake, a full exhaust, a proper tune(not a power commander), and some proper tires turn the bike into a much better setup ride. Granted, if your track has a huge straight section, then you're going to be lacking on power, and there's no getting away from it. People rely on power way too much. Corner speed is key and knowing how to get on throttle when leaving a turn is crucial.

  • @AwesomeHairo

I have an R3 and it's marketed as a beginner's bike. It's purpose is for you to make all kinds of mistakes until you get something with more power. The problem was, the R6 was overkill; they're not meant for street riding. If you wanted to upgrade but still predominately ride on the streets like most people, you'd get an MT-07. So no, the R3 is not for one type of person and the R7 is for another. Not usually anyway because there will be exceptions like with people who actually feels the R3 is enough. It depends on the country, or city, and from my experience, the smaller and/or more crowded the place, the more likely a smaller bike would be enough (smaller streets, constant heavy traffic, etc). In the U.S, it is more likely you'll want to crave more power due to how long and big the streets usually are. Long story short, the R7 is simply a possible upgrade.

The r7 reminds me of how automakers toned down sport cars, making them glorified corollas and civics. . Now only one or two rear wheel drive platforms are available (Miata and gt86) aside from Camaro and mustang. The Only difference now is that yamaha fanboys are rooting for the company as they take away the real sport bike and replace it with a suburban/neutered version. The R7 is today what a front wheel drive Toyota celica/corolla became in the 90s. It's today's glorified corolla with flairs and trd badges.

A you tube video confirmed it when the rider couldn’t hit redline in 6th. Dow a tooth front up front and up one in back should let it push the engine harder. My simple calculations say it should hit 140 in top gear with proper sprockets. I’m sure emissions is the culprit.

@@xxxxx7876 People mod groms but it doesn't mean it's worth it. Judging from the mt07 the ECU flash+exhasut makes it smoother and a bit better on the top end but it won't be enough if your impression from stock mt07 is that it lacks in power. These mods are great for people who are happy with the power but need more refinement to the power delivery.

I was gonna get an R7 as my first bike but after watching this video, I think I’m just gonna go for the R1M.

Let me be honest here, although the R7 was not meant to replace the R6, the fact that the R6 is no longer in the market simply means that people can only look to the R7 to fill the intermediate role. And what other way to put it than to say that intentionally or not, the R7 replaces the R6 and it's a shite replacement.

I own both a CBR650F and a CBR600RR. You just rode the Yamaha version of my 650F. Fun bike for daily street riding, does most things well. Not a Supersport however. Just a “sport bike”. The visceral feel of a high-revving I4 is hard to duplicate except for something like a Triumph Street Triple. No doubt Yamaha was already aware of this, hence its non-SS price point.

So basically not a good bike for anyone but a very very beginner rider.. which is odd because you loved it for anyone who could ride on the street.. My question... Could you swap the mt09 engine into the r.7?

In short, it’s exactly what Yamaha designed it to be. A truly competent and fully usable road sport bike. And a possibly a beginner track bike. Can’t have both worlds man. If you want a dominant track bike, then just don’t buy it.

Guys in Moto America are turning incredible lap times on them…obviously highly modified, but still within the limits of the stock chassis.

What would you recommend for a first time track bike? Been riding for 8 + years but have no track experience

I suppose it depends on the sticker price. If it's using existing frames and powertrain, but then want a high price tag, that's commercial suicide, not a way to fatten up profits.

I hear similar comments on other channels. No way this 7 should sport the “R” in the wake of r6.
