Yamaha PSR E373 Review

Музыка

This is my comprehensive review on the Yamaha PSR E373 portable arranger keyboard, focusing on whether it's a good portable option for a piano player. Great sounds (especially the piano!), tons of features, and super portable . . . looks like a solid choice!

    I happened across your video purely by chance from my KZread feed. Generally speaking I know nothng about music, keyboards or pianos but still I watched the entire video. Thirty nine minutes passed and now I am interested in music, keyboards or pianos and it's highly likely I will buy a PSR E373. My motive for posting is to say thank you for inspiring an old guy to try something new, and I cannot wait!

    An excellent review; the best ive found so far. im getting one of these tomorrow from a lady who got it as a gift but she never even opened the box or plugged it in! i had to TELL her to do that to make sure it works!! I play hymns by ear on my other 55key portkey board..I ADORE the grand piano button on the 373; thats what sold me on this one. Yeah totally worth it; some 61 key boards (PSR-E473, Korg EK50) have dedicated octave shift buttons right on the panel so it’s easy, but diving into a menu every time is no fun - with 76 keys you don’t have to do that anywhere near as often

    You can also use the full chord setting and play single finger chords as well using the older model approach of playing minor chords using the previous method of playing an Am chord using the A key plus nearest black key to the left and similarily a C7 chord by playing the C key plus the nearest white key to the left. Easier for those of us who grew up on the older models!

    Just got my E373. Love the piano sounds...but I am having an issue that might mean returning keyboard to store. Problem is when assigning a drum pattern to one channel, that drum pattern automatically goes to all other channels. When assigning a new rhythm to any channel, the same thing happens: pattern auto-populates on all the other channels. Any experince with this?

  • @PianoTone

    @PianoTone

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there! An F# Dim is basically a D chord only with a D note instead of a C note (C - F# - A); I would check if you are on the "Smart Chord" chord mode instead of fingered, and if so switch to fingered. Also check where the split point is set in case it is cutting off some of your notes (some below the split point some above). Thanks for visiting the channel, feel free to subscribe

    How to play G Major chord in e 373, because when I pressed G Major chord it appeared as G7 on the screen ... Em also a problem

  • @PianoTone

    @PianoTone

    2 жыл бұрын

    Check what chord mode you are in (page 23 of the manual explains it) - there is “full chord” (you finger the full chord normally in your left hand, but make sure all notes of the chord are below the split point). And there is “Smart Chord” - with this you first specify the key signature of the song (specifying # of sharps or flats-check the manual) which allows you to specify a diatonic chord with one finger . If you’re playing a full g major chord (GBD) make sure you’re in “full chord” mode and that all 3 notes you’re using are below the split point. I just bought this board. I unplugged my MX, set this board up, and discovered only one 1/4 output. Where is the stereo mix on my computer? Does stereo only come through a USB plug?

  • @PianoTone

    @PianoTone

    6 ай бұрын

    The one output is a stereo headphone output, so to send stereo to anything else that would require either a TRS cable to connect to another input capable of receiving stereo or a TRS to 2xTR splitter cable to connect to 2 mono inputs on something else. Thank you so much and god bless you❤️. But how did you record the playing part? This keyboard sounds too low in my DAW and needs a lot of work to sounds loud and clear so I suggested play it like your way to get loud and clear sound and then send it to my DAW. Did you record through the speakers or usb connected to the laptop or what? How to record and get the sound like yours?

  • @PianoTone

    @PianoTone

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would have recorded it with the headphone split to L/R line ins on my mixer/audio interface which then output direct to my iPhone recording the video. I then (probably) boosted the overall volume (I can’t remember if I did that on this video but I usually do) using my video editor. I have found with many keyboards that volume through an audio interface is often not very loud-you could also try recording directly into your DAW from the USB port since this keyboard has an audio interface built in (make sure you use an audio not midi track in your daw). Yes you can shift octaves - you have to find it in the function menu, and it will shift back on its own if you change voices (if you’re going to use it alot I would set up your voices etc, shift the octave as you wish and then save it in a registration so you can recall it quickly) Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

    Now that CS T1 has long been released, as well as the Casio CST 400 and Yamaha EZ300, what are your thoughts on THOSE? I understand for keyboard bed/action, nothing in this $ compares to the CS T1, but I'd like to tinker a little bit in some of the other arranger features. PIANO LEARNING is also a main objective, which is why I've added the EZ300. THe Casino LTK450/250 is also being considered. Sound quality, compact size (Yamahas are LESS so than Casios) and lesson features are all important. I wish the CS T1 had arranger capabilities and built in midi interface as the Yamaha you reviewed. I'm really just getting started after not having touched a piano in more than 20 years when I had taken rudimentary lessons. I play beginner acoustic/classical guitar, but would like to be able to jam (sing, guitar, keyboard) with my musically talented brothter who needs help with digital production/software, so I'd like my keyboard to be at least capable of beginning that journey. GREAT REVIEW, btw... have now subscribed and will check out your other reviews asap. TY.

    I have a review on the CTS1 - it is awesome, but no arranger features. The EZ is just the 373 with learning functions but online lessons now are far better than built in learning functions that I wouldn’t bother with the EZ. The CTS400/500 have arranger features but I would recommend sticking with Yamaha either the 373 or 473. Thanks!

    @@PianoTone Thanks; I'm taking your suggestion and going with the Yamaha PSR e373, today on sale for $189 on Amazon, in a set format including stand, and headphones (not expecting much from either, but even without those accessories, the 189 is a good deal for keyboard/ac adapter alone) I have been perusing vids/info online for connecting this 373 to an ipad pro 11" 3rd gen, with a USB-C jack, to the USB MIDI (USB-B) on the keyboard. So many reviewers suggest you must get the apple camera adaptor, though i've just found many 3rd party USB-B printer cables with USB-C on the other end, obviating need for any kind of additional cable.... Are you aware of any compatibility issues or reasons why a 3rd Party USB B to USB C, Nylon USB C Printer Cord wouldn't be sufficient to connect the keyboard to Ipad or MBP (also w USB-C/thunderbolt ports) ??? I"m hoping to use garage band and take advantage of built in audio interface for basic recording and other 2-way audio functionality (that is, IF I am understanding the built in audio interface capabilities of this Yamaha. Anywho, just wanted to thank YOU for a great, thorough, straightforward review as well as brief comparisons of other models. Well done and THANK YOU!

To be honest I have no idea about whether a USB printer cable (to USB-C) would work or whether you need a camera kit with USB-C (my iPad is ancient lol). Hope your keyboard arrives soon, and let me know how your connectivity works with your iPad and cable if you go that route: - does MIDI work without lag? - does audio stream back from the iPad? Uhhh so I am thinking into playing piano however I don't know whether I should start with a keyboard or a digital piano

  • @PianoTone

    @PianoTone

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there! The big thing to consider is whether you want weighted keys or not; most digital pianos will have weighted keys that more closely mimic the "feel" of an acoustic piano - keys on a real piano are harder to press down than keys on a keyboard (which are "synth action"). I have a video describing the difference here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZauDlbJvhJWenaw.html Digital pianos with weighted keys will cost more, so that's up to you whether you want to spend more to get that; if you're not sure if it's something you will stick with, then it might make sense not to spend too much on your first one (if you stick with it you can upgrade later). Here are some options for starter digital pianos and keyboards: Alesis Recital Pro: fully weighted keys, decent sounds nice user interface, one of the least expensive fully weighted pianos (I owned one for a year and liked it): kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHiC28ioepfNfbA.html Alesis Recital: semi-weighted (not as realistic as fully weighted, but closer to a real piano feel than non weighted; still has decent sounds and 88 keys): kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKR8ktitltWunbA.html Casiotone CT-S1: this is a newer keyboard with non weighted keys, but they do have an almost semi-weighted feel, and the piano sounds on this are fantastic (I own this as a portable keyboard - runs on batteries only weighs 8 pounds); it is only 61 keys, but is less expensive than the 2 Alesis models, so not a bad option if you don't want to spend that much. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eax1pKd-kcvgZbQ.html Hope that helps! @@yomo6624 From what you are saying, I would agree - I think a digital piano is a better choice. Either the Alesis Recital Pro or the Yamaha P45 /71 (the 71 is an Amazon exclusive piano that is the same as the 45) would be great choices. The Yamaha has a more realistic & higher quality key action (it is graded as well as weighted - so feels heavier at the low end and lighter at the right like a real piano - the Alesis is weighted the same across the entire keyboard). The Alesis has a much nicer user interface (more buttons and a screen), line out ports for connecting to external amps, and is less expensive. I reviewed the P45 here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nHV5xNSTo9fdg6w.html Hope that helps!

    I found the sustain on the 373 excessive and of very little use as it`s all or nothing. Got one of these a few months ago after a longish layoff, and have found other problems in that it doesn`t now work off the batteries and can`t get the registration memory to do anything. However it`s a decent little keyboard, especially for a beginner and I have been able to put the styles to good use to get back into the swing of playing, so things are far from lost. I do intend to upgrade eventually, probably to an E473, the styles are the same only more of them than on this and the 463 which I tried to get earlier but failed as Yamaha had just withdrawn it.
