Rob: Thank you for providing this type of service to working musicians. As a side note, the Yamaha EMX860ST actually has 3 X 200 watt amps in it. Two are for the stereo mains, and the third amp drives the monitor speakers. This 3 amp setup is hard to find, but saves carrying around an extra amp just for the monitors. Not sure why the idea never caught on. Ben Price - San Antonio

I have to change one of the variable sliders for the equalizer in mine. This gave me an excellent idea on how to disassemble. Thanks!

great presentation thanks, I have an EMX512sc it had 2 scratchy vol pots ,and I found your clip on how to dismantle but it looked to much for me but what I tried first worked a treat as I only had to lube and not replace the pots , and managed without pulling apart I sat the amp on its back, removed the knobs and dribbled a few drops of CRC, same as WD40 , down the pot shaft and worked the pot shaft for about 20 secs and then sat it back up to its usual position and worked them for about 20-30 secs and problem solved. I thought I'd post this for anyone else with same problem a scratchy pot, to save pulling apart. Your clip is great and very well done you are very well organised and informative . cheers Dave . thanks

Nice job, the desoldering station with its powered solder vacuum certainly makes for quick work of removing the remains of the old pots! I am assume that this Yamaha model utilizes double sided and plated through holes? Always has been a particularly tough fix for me. The proximity of the pots to each other and misc. neighboring components doesnt afford much real estate on the top side to maneuver a iron and solder sucker. Without a desoldering station and the powered vacuum, I always end up alternating both sides of the board to remove a stubborn pot. I can imagine what its like pulling teeth! Just need to be patient and gently extract, to save pads and traces from destruction! Makes surface mount more attractive! Lately I will just destroy the pot body with a pair of nippers and desolder each lead singularly. Makes for less instances of wirewrap wire jumpers glued to the board once everything is said and done! I really dont care for repairing mixing boards. Seems like that there is always a steady stream of boards coming in that require complete disassembly. They take up too much bench space, too many small parts and too time consuming to make for a enjoyable afternoon! 😝

Southbound Suarez Thanks for the repair tips. I had a hard time paying the $200 for the station since I don't do repairs for a living. Now I am glad I spent the money. I have used on it 4 other projects and it makes removal a breeze.

Answer for a stereo output: Left channel in section 5, jack in nr 1, Right channel in section 6, jack in nr 2. Output speakers: Left channel Power Amp 1 or 2, Right channel in Power Amp 1 or 2. Then you get the stereo sound. If you do the left channel in 1 in section 5 and the right channel in 2, then it remains mono! Unfortunately, this is how the EMX640 is switched. See the scedule behind in the manual. Have fun Martien Giebels from Holland!

Hello Rob, I bought a used Yamaha emx 640. But when I connect my keyboards there is a noisy sound. It can't be due to the keyboards and cables. Because I've been using them until now. Do you have any idea how I can solve the problem? I suspect a couple of capacitors need to be replaced.

I had to resolder many of the xlr inputs on the one I worked on. I would check for bad solder joints first.
