Not really it's just gonna be heavier but the power is gonna be like 3-5hp more just to be a A2 bike. There was already a version of the MT-03 with 660cc it was the first gen check it out it's pretty dope looking and slightly heavier with 48hp.

My advice For All beginner riders: 1) if you are truly new to riding please understand that riding requires a lot of skill, attention, patience, and respect for these machines. I've been riding for years and I still make mistakes, so keep that in mind, your not a pro and your not practicing for the TT Isle of Man on regular streets so don't act like it. Cycle Cruza always talks about defensive riding and that's something that takes practice over time. 2) Practice, Practice, Practice. No matter what bike you choose whether it's a 300, 600, or 1000 (definitely don't recommend for beginners). You need to practice on that bike. Every bike is different and just like a brand new car it takes a while to get used to all the controls everywhere. Find an isolated place and practice everything - cornering, shifting, braking, everything before you head out on these streets. 3) what you can afford? If you can afford a nice bike as a beginner rider go for it! but, know this, your going to drop that bike I promise you. You'll forget something because it's not natural to you yet, kickstand etc.. So buy yourself a bike to practice and learn on and not something to show off to your friends and family. Hey it's ok if they laugh at your 250 or 300 just get something to practice on the streets with that your going to drop because it will happen so no sense of buying an expensive bike. 4) Also, my advice don't buy a used bike. I bought plenty of used bikes and only ran into more trouble as a beginner rider because your not going to know what's broken with your bike when something is not right. Just like a car you need to feel it, it's 10 times more with a bike. 5) Lastly, just my option, but they say a bike is cheaper than a car, I'm here to tell you that's slightly true. Yes, it saves on gas and everything else but if your buying a bike to save money your not going too as a beginner rider. I recommend the best gear always when riding, but especially as a beginner, and gear is expensive but trust me you want the best gear money can buy and that shouldn't be an option for you when riding. Over the years your going to want to put new shiny toys on your bike and that will be expensive as well. Good luck, stay safe!

You give some good advice. As a new rider, I took MSF course, but I also learned a lot "the hard way". :( But I have to disagree on one point. For a new rider buying a new bike is not wise because, you'll be selling it in the near future for a bigger one and will lose more money on that sale. Plus, as you said, if/(when) you drop your first bike, the damage won't feel so bad.

Personally I went from a 30mph ebike to a 2021 MT03. I'm extremely new to riding and the 03 was perfect, Perfect throttle throw for a beginner, great seat height, Excellent wet weight makes it easy to toss around, the clutch is SUPER forgiving and the brakes aren't bad.. not great but abs helps... I did TRY a MT07 but it was a bit taller to me (5'4) and i felt super uncomfortable with the throttle response and torque on demand.

I was a beginner rider in 2019. I purchased a 2019 CB500F for my first bike and sold it within 10 months. I upgraded to a 2020 SV650. Hindsight, I wish I would’ve purchased the SV650 as my first bike. I would recommend the SV650. I own both a 2020 SV650 and a 2022 MT-07. My SV650 has a smooth throttle response unlike my MT-07. Also, the SV650 has a feature called throttle assist for stop to go and slow speed maneuvering. BTW, I also own a 2020 DRZ400SM. It’s another great bike I would recommend for a beginner.

MT03 forsure, i started on an R3 and it was some of the best times on a bike. Commuted, tracked, traveled, dropped, fixed, rode aimlessly, etc etc i did it all. Gave me a hint of the sportbike feel with a lot of forgiveness, inspired confidence, and it let me put her through hell when it was that time to hoon around. I miss that little thing and i am so glad i started “small”. I’m on that whole spice of life thing and have gone through various different bikes since but currently settled with an FZ10, FZ07, XT250, and TW200. The FZ10 is my forever bike, the CP4, the looks, the feel, all of it i just know that bike is meant for me. My lil dualsports are for all the fun i need for the dirt and some road. The FZ07… She’s great and gives me some R3 vibes due to its practicality and lightness, the punchy CP2 that makes my work commutes worth it every single time BUT! A big BUT! Its just not for me, all the the things about it that bother me can be fixed but i’d rather put my money elsewhere. I too am a Yamaha fanboy but Kawasaki knocked it out the park this year with the ZX4R and will be selling my FZ07 for it. I miss the petiteness of a lil crotch rocket and all day trackdays and fun i had on my R3 and ringing out the top end. In honor of the joy the R3 brought me i will buy the next closest thing to it by sacrificing my CP2 and getting a mini inline 4.

I would also highly recommend the MT03 or the Honda Grom as a beginner bike. The MT07 is a badass bike It may not be the fastest but like you said it has a crap ton of torque and it could set you up for a real effed up day if you don't know how to control the beast.

On paper the MT-03 is great for beginners, but it is physically too small for many people. I'm 6' tall and about 260 and I am severely cramped on the MT-03. Did a demo ride on one a few years ago and barely made it the half an hour. The MT-07 seems manageable for a beginner but they have to watch the throttle hand. Better still if it came with adjustable power modes.

You think going from a Harley 1200cc Forty eight to an MT09 is too big of a jump and instead go to an MT07? I'm still looking for something that i can ride out on 500+ mile adventures which is what i do on my 48 and the stance on the MT's seems like they could probably handle a cross country trip just fine. Some say the 48 isn't nearly good enough for cross country and i think that's 1,000% incorrect because my furthest is 1,300+ miles and it was a dream on my 1200cc. I'm just looking for a change up and a friend recommended an MT09.

I just bought a MT-03 a week ago and have been riding for about 3 days now. I’ve dropped it a few times. I admit it was a bit scary at first stepping up from beat down 250s at my MSF course. It’s got the right amount of demand for respect without feeling like I’m gonna get sent into the stratosphere. I do have a question if you ever see this. Any recommendations on replacement gear shifter lever (left boot)? After dropping my bike a couple times it’s a bit bent and I’ve gotten it looked at/fixed at a mechanic shop but a bit worried for the possible day it’s out of commission and so far I’ve found iffy selections and been lost since. I don’t mind if someone also aside from Cyclecruza gives me some input!

I would HIGHLY recommend the Yamaha MT03 or R3 for beginner riders (or Kawasaki Ninja 300/400, Honda CB300, Honda Rebel 300, etc...). Anything below 50 horsepower should be good. No beginner bike has dual disc front brakes, no beginner bike has a 180 section rear tire. I rode a Yamaha R3 for 3 years before upgrading to my current Yamaha MT07, that little R3 taught me so much and even after all that the MT07 STILL surprised me with it's torque and I had a couple of times where I would spin up the rear wheel by accident or accidentally wheelie when taking off. The MT07 is no joke, it might be tame compared to bigger 100+ horsepower bikes but it still produces torque like a 600cc but at low revs, it is a well respected bike in the stunting community because it is so easy to wheelie. No wheelie machine should be your first bike. You learn a LOT from riding a smaller bike.

  • @OtterMachine

@@Takezo_no_Miyamoto the torque on the MT03 is good enough for city riding and great for beginners. The 0 to 100kmph (0 to 60mph) is like just over 5 seconds if you skilled. The MT07 is about 4 seconds. The MT07 is quite torqey but not out of control, is actually an easy going bike of you smooth on the throttle. If you are a bit older or very mature, and taller than 6ft (180cm) then I think the MT07 COULD work for a beginner but I will always recommend a 300 or 400cc bike for beginners.

What do you think about the Triumph Speed 400 for a first bike? (We’re talking a 66 year old dude who’s never been on a motorcycle in his life) …I was thinking a dual sport Yamaha XT250 because 99% of my riding will be in town (bad traffic areas too DC metro area), but one reason is the cost of parts if (when) I drop it…I figure the Triumph is going to be way more expensive for parts, and the little dual sport Yamaha from what I hear is virtually bulletproof…of course if you get hit or hit something….no bike is bulletproof.

Good advice. I've had bigger bikes, but have other responsibilities now so I won't be buying a $10.000 bike. There are several other reasons for my interest in the smaller MT-03. I was never a skilled rider and I'd like to be. Formal training on a smaller bike makes learning a lot easier. Secondly, burning less gas is important - not only the for cost of it but also with regard to the pollution from it. And finally, I think there's more fun pushing a slower bike harder than trying to rein in a monster. Smaller bikes are where motorcycling started over a hundred years ago. And smaller bikes defined cafe races and scrambling decades ago. I'm going to restart my riding on the 03 or something like it.

I started my wife on a Grom, which we kept for 7 years!!!!! After about 6 months of riding, she got a CB500F which is a fantastic bike! Much better than any 300/400cc bikes with many premium features and extremely cheap to own due to Honda Quality and ridiculously low insurance. I’m going to say that the 500cc class is severely under represented and makes a much better beginner platform for real adults in the US.

So Yamaha will always be the value leader along with Kawasaki, and Suzuki, the Euro's are going to be premium, electronic laden, you know fancy, have you ever owned adventure bikes?

MT03 is an excellent price for the drivetrain and reliability. Priced like a Royal Enfield budget 350, but twice the motor and less weight. It is a bit squat and cramped for an adult man over 6' or a heavy guy over 5'8"....excellent for a slim or smaller frame. It can be better for a tall rider with the optional tall seat. The 07 is tuned for seasoned riders. It is more expensive, it is a more spacious frame but only 40 lbs heavier (impressive with twice the motor and a bigger frame). If your MSF classes still teach with Yamaha 250s, CB250s, old Rebel 250s then you're already in for some surprises with the NEW bike you buy. Those bikes have 18 to 20hp, slow cams, mechanical brakes with drum brakes in the mix. You buy even the MT03 and you get twice the power and 5 x the brakes to toss you off if you abuse it.

@@CycleCruza that’s what I’m saying, QS is for the Street Rossi, might as well go track. lowkey the 2022 Display looks better as well, I love my 22 MT-07. Also the forks, I agree, USD Adjustable wouldve been nice, but that’s the difference between the R7 and MT’s cost I guess

Kawasaki 400 twin is ideal. But they need to put it in adv and true standard bike form. Not just for entry rider but for Boomers who can't handle 800 lb hogs anymore. That 400cc motor seems to be good compromise between too big and too small. Goldilocks wants one too.

mt-03 would be a fun AF if you're in cities or small towns. then upgrade to 07 after you get some experience. if you're out in the country, get the 07

They should diffidently get the MT-03 first. Let them come up at there own pace. When there ready for the 07 they'll know. Better a alive fellow biker than one the bit off more than they can chew to soon.

MT-03 doesn't look that bad at all, but MT-07 has that nice grunt.

All of the MT bikes are set up with grunt for the street, even the MT-03. The MT stands for "Master of Torque."
