Owner of both. They are no brainers for a first bike or anyone that loves riding small fast. My thoughts. The cb300r gets way more compliments as far as looks...I have the blue and black 2020. It is a beautiful motorcycle. The mt03 has a higher top speed by about 15mph in my experience, however, I live in the mountains, the single thumper in the cb300r pulls up hill with more conviction and it has better cornering. The seating is similar, but the mt03 is a bit less cramped and more comfortable. Both get great gas mileage. I choose to ride the cb300r 70% of the time. The breaking is adequate at best on both, though again the engine breaking on the cb300r is incredible and takes sometime to get use to. Lighting is great on both. 1st gear on the cb300r is shorter which can be a bit weird when stop and go is followed immediately by a acriss traffic left turn. Any questions I'll answer, but these bikes are the best beginner nakeds going. Duke fans shut up the orange bike is too fucking to ugly for anyone with any self respect to be seen on.

THANK YOU! Been waiting for someone to give this insight. Can’t make up my mind. So you are not saying the MT has inferior brakes, right? Do you find the CB300R more “exhilarating riding experience” overall? If i can only have one of these for my bike for 5-10 years, which should I choose?

@@grumpysquid They are both great. I believe the cb300r is a better ride. It pulls up hill effortlessly, starts faster from a stop, and does have better front breaks. They are both kind of wooden break feeling, but it's just a feeling they both stop fine. So, it could come down to style. Everyone loves the retro round lights on the cb300r...that neo retro style. Again, both great bikes. Push came to shove. I'd give my mt03 away before I'd sell my cb300r.

@@grumpysquid both Honda and Yammie's are brilliantly built bikes. The build quality is legendary. Easily the best 2 companies on earth. So, both are very smooth and extremely forgiving. You can't break em while learning that's for sure. I would say the Yamaha is a tad smoother. Not much though.

Hats off to you for not once calling these ‘beginner’ bikes like most other reviewers do. I have been riding for twenty years and have had every size of bike, and I’ve just bought a cb300R not because it’s a beginner bike, but because it’s just a plain and simple great bike. Calling it a ‘beginner’ bike puts it off most seasoned riders wish lists because it’s somehow a demeaning term. A shame, because as I said it’s just a great bike with all the power you’d ever need for everyday riding. So, this review is right at the top of the many I’ve seen over the last few years. Thanks for not patronising your biker brothers. I subscribe on this basis.

@@fftheblueskys absolutely. It’s like many think that the more experienced you are, the bigger or faster the bike you should get. Absolute nonsense. I’ve had as much fun on the 300 as I ever had on my 1000cc bikes. If I was doing a very long ride then maybe I’d miss my old big bikes, but this is still capable as long as you take a few more breaks.

I'm 5' 9" tall with a 32" inseam. I sat on a 2022 MT-03 (couldn't ride it, someone had sealed the deal on it 20 minutes before), felt really cramped on the bike. I sat on a 2019 CB300R, no cramped feeling. Rode the bike, bought the bike, loving the bike. Experience wise, this is probably my 12th bike, currently my only bike.

I recently purchased the MT-03. After putting 1400 miles on it in 2 months, I have noticed I love this bike! I am finding excuses to go for rides. The bike is replacing my car as my daily commuter, as it does 70-80mph in its sleep, with plenty juice left to accelerate in a pinch if needed. I have had my bike up to 110mph according to the speedometer, with it still accelerating, but probably near top end, and backed off because well, that's just fucking fast. As for power, it has no problem doing a wheelie in 2nd, so Beginners, be careful in those first 2 gears!!! Don't let this small bike fool you into thinking it's a calm bike. It definitely earned the MT (Master of Torque) name. Fuel economy, I have noticed, depending on how hard I ring its neck, I get anywhere from 40-60mpg, and I have achieved 70mpg during the break-in period when I babied it. Ergo-speaking, I am 5'10" & 190lbs with 32" legs, and I fit absolutely perfectly into the bike, with my thigh-to-knee tucking right in under the gas tank like it was meant to be, and the arches of my feet naturally go right to the pegs, with the shifter & brake levers at the perfect spots. I sit mostly straight up, with a ever so slight aggressive lean and slight elbow bend. The bike does allow for the rider to scoot back in the seat, drop the elbows, & really lay down on the gas tank in a tucked position if desired at times. As far as handling, the bike literally becomes an extension of you, and goes wherever you want, leans well, flicks & maneuvers with ease, and can take twisties as fast as your riding abilities will allow. I can see myself owning this bike for years to come!

I owned a 2020 CB300R for five months, then traded that back in to get a 2020 MT-03, which I still own. The CB300R is a good-looking bike and light in weight and has a smooth, easy-to-ride power delivery. Those things are what it does well. The 286cc thumper has good power down low and decent power in the middle revs. As you'd expect, it flattens out beyond 8,000 RPM and wants an upshift, unless you like making noise. The handling felt good and sporty with surprisingly good suspension. The Dunlop GPR300 radial tires help with the handling, I'm sure, as they're good tires. What I was disappointed with on the CB300R was the weak front brake that never got any better than so-so, something that, for me, is hard to take. I bought the MT-03 this past March and am glad I traded the Honda for it because it really is a better match for what I like in my street bikes. Although it weighs more than the CB300R due to it's 2-cylinder engine and the styling could use some help in the looks dept. due to those goofy-looking fake air intake scoops, the engine has considerably more steam across the board (even down low, it pulls quite well), the bike handles like a dream, it also has surprisingly good suspension, and, thank God, the front brake actually works as I'd expect it to. The MT-03 also comes with Dunlop GPR300 radial tires, by the way. So, due to more poke from the engine and a good front brake, I pick the MT-03 over the CB300R lighter weight and better styling. For me, it's not much of a contest.

That's interesting since the specs for front brake favor the Honda (petals on disc with 4 pistons, opt for ABS with IMU) and many reviewers say it has the best brakes in the class. Sounds like paper specs didn't show up on the pavement.

I don't see how it can be rated anything better than fair. A master cylinder with a smaller-diameter piston might have fixed it for me, but I traded it for the MT-03 before I tried it. I still have the Magura 12mm radial master cylinder I was going to try, too.

I loved it, except that the lack of acceleration in the lower gears started feeling like a safety issue. If they made a tu450x, it'd be a no-brainer. QUESTION- Will the slight increase in engine size and horsepower of the CB300r vs my 250 be enough to satisfy my need for more acceleration? If I had the $$ I'd pick up a CB650r immediately.

I picked up a cb300r non abs for $3099 dollars at my local dealer + all the additional fees a week ago, at first I wanted to buy the mt-03 however at this price point the cb300r did it for me, I'm a beginner rider and I love the torque delivery throughout the power band, transmission is very smooth, the power delivery for me was more than adequate, very comfortable, top speed for me was 74mph at 109 degree ambient temp, I'm 190 lb, I'm sure in the winter time it will do better, this is going to sound crazy but I learned how to ride on a honda st1300 police motorcycle, I was scared of it the thing just wanted to get of my hands every time I gave it some throttle, I'm a fleet technician that's how I have access to this things and every time I serviced it I had to ride it to make sure everything was ok, for those of you that want a little more power on this bike it can be done by using a tune system like the power commander, and extra 10hp on this bike should be plenty, I'm planning on doing that after I ran out of factory warranty.

Only thing is I hope I get enough off road fun with it and don't end up more on road. If so I may be better jus with a standard. Who in Honda's design team thought it was a good idea to make it such that you have to remove the fuel tank to replace the battery? One of the first mods I do is get a Li-ion battery, and I'm not about to tear out the entire front fairings and the fuel tank just to get at the battery. It was a monumentally stupid design decision.

Alex I think your opinion more less mirrors mine. I had the 2019 cb300r for close to a year and now I ride MT-03. For city riding where rev is kept to less than 6000rpm it is not even close. CB lower end torque makes the commute a joy. Honda build quality is better. everything tactile elements feel better. The one thing i dislike on the CB300R is the suspension. It was design for smooth roads only. Every bumps, every potholes you feel it. Now the MT, it feels way sportier than the Honda. Where the Honda redline at 9000ish MT will rev to 12500rpm. The engine revs very smoothly but the sounds it makes is a bit thrashy. CB300 can be vibey through the handle bar making your hand numb after about an hour ride. No such thing on MT. You sit in on the Yamaha where you sit on in the Honda. The gear change is very precise. No miss gear, no fault neutral. One thing that all MT owner hate is the quality of the screws and bolts. They rust easily if you park the bike outside for period of time. Makes no sense to me why Yamaha cheap out on these. Choosing the 2 could not be easier. MT-03 if you enjoy carving up mountain roads. CB300R if you mostly commute.

Gah I still can't fucking decide XD I love the looks of the honda, I like Honda's history, but the mt-03 has more power and my commute is exclusively on the highway (70mph) and I love the twin cylinder engine the looks I'm somewhat in the fence about. The angry face just doesn't really do it for me.

Extra power always wins but styling wise, prefer round headlights. Probably a age thing. Was looking at something like these to replace my 40 year old honda commuter. However, did the short commute on my RE classic 500 which, was perfect. 👍

Had one. Too vibrating for my liking. With the power on these two bikes...I tend to agree with your philosophy...it is hardly noticeable, in fact most riders would guess the cb300r has more if they didn't know the specs. Like the RE. The single thumper, along with the weight, just appears more powerful. As for the poster talking about the mid to upper powerband I'd agree with the upper, but the cb300r from 3000 to 10000rpm is straight linear torque and really shines over my mt03 in the hilly area I live.It never struggles like the more horsepower mt03.

Coming from a R6 after 11 years I tried a CB300R.. I found it incredibly nimble and well built for the price... only had one grip was ... fwy speeds as it can make 80mph but you are pretty revved out .... sold it... so now maybe an MT03

I tossed up between these two bikes, chose the honda. Yamaha is cheaper here in Australia but man it's ugly. Honda is a safer first bike with its IMU abs and showa forks and it looks coooool ✌️

Who are all these 6'4" and 6'5" guys posting about how they fit on a 300 little bike? If I was that tall, I wouldn't even be looking at these bikes. The only real reason I'm looking at them is because I'm only 5'6", otherwise I'd be all over some used BMW or similar adventure bike for the same $ but can't due to the seat height. Also, everyone keeps mentioning Honda reliability and Japan made, but this bike is made in Thailand and the 300cc engines have had issues pop up at 10K miles.... which would put in the same class as the Duke as far as I'm concerned. I personally don't understand everyone saying the CB has the best looks. For me, it's dead last in this class - looks like a 70s bike with the round helmet but with ugly plastic bits instead of chrome. If it wants to be classic than be classic. For looks and performance, it's got to be #1 Z400; #2 tie between G310 and Duke; #3 MT03; #4 CB. But for tech, it should be #1 Duke, #2 Z400 and CB. All the electronic features, slipper clutch, etc. that these bikes have and the MT03 does not. I found it strange that the nod in this video went to MT03 for the transmission but everyone knocks the MT03 for stiff clutch and no slipper... Most specs other than HP (brake specs, slipper, ABS with IMU) favor the CB.... and the Duke. For myself, I want the lower seat height and lightweight (too a point) of the CB, but the HP of the other bikes, and the electronics of the Duke. As others suggested here, Honda should make this a 350 and for me make it a scrambler.... I hear rumors they may actually be doing that and shipping soon?? If they don't, then I'm going for the Z400 or the MT03. I already have an old Bandit 400 that is the original screamer cafe bike though, so it's kind of redundant - hence the desire for a scrambler or adventure small bike that Honda doesn't currently offer.
