Yamaha FZ-10 First Ride Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...
For anyone who was driving through the southern Smoky Mountains recently, rest easy. That Grey and Hi-Viz thunderbolt you saw blaze by was not a ground-skimming extra-terrestrial fighter-jet piloted by a bearded intergalactic warrior king. No, no. It was something even faster, meaner, and better engineered. The machine was the new 2017 Yamaha FZ-10. The bearded, Italian-motorcycle-gear-wearing lumberjack in the cockpit, was Spurge.
With the new FZ-10, Yamaha has introduced its forward-thinking vision for the newest iteration of their FZ flagship. As one of the most aggressively-styled streetfighters out there, the Yamaha FZ-10 attacks the tarmac with the ferocious aesthetics of a Michael Bay-envisioned mechanical superhero, while backing it up with a plethora of performance capabilities that will keep any moto-junkie transfixed through every twist, turn, and straightaway to come.

    I know the manufactures used to leave a bike for test purposes at a reduced cost to the stealerships as a standard. Bring this back. They have them for cars and trucks why not bikes? I did a demo group ride for Indian Scout and that wasn't good enough length of time for shelling out the big money on a cruiser.

    Just went down to my local dealer and sat on one. It really isn't that fat, was very surprised how small it was actually. I've owned an FZ-09 since they were first released and it felt very similar, just a tad bit more beefy and really felt balanced. The only problem I have is my dealer charges almost $1000 for it being shipped to them and another near $1000 to build it. So the sticker jumps up to $14,900!!! This seemed like a great buy at $12.9 but at $14.9 I'm just not too sure.

    Yamaha has trademarked the moniker "Tracer GT" in Europe as of 4/17. In Europe, this bike is the MT10...and one owner there deftly coined it the "Empty 10" due to the short (~135 miles) fuel range. You can try touring on that in the US, but you'd better fill your luggage with fuel bottles. Sold my FZ09, but enjoying my 17 FJ09 (~200 mile fuel range) quite a bit, especially with the Ohlins suspension I just installed. I am interested in something like an FJ10. Fill those fake scoops on the tank with gas, add a more comfy seat, keep the sporty suspension, throw in some red, white and blue paint choices (skip the blurple and dayglo wheels, please), maybe dial back (at least shorten) the bug beak, and you will have another winner. :)

    With the 2017 FZ-09 getting new adjustable forks, traction control, slipper assist clutch, and ABS standard; do you think that 4k is still worth it jumping to the FZ-10? Im looking to get a naked for a more comfortable upright ride than my r6 after my accident(the aggressive position takes a toll on my lower back now [disc damage]), and im definitely torn between the 10, the 09, and the XSR900. Which do you think would serve as a better daily ride?

  • @SpurgeonDunbar

    @SpurgeonDunbar

    7 жыл бұрын

    This is an interesting question. My favorite part about the FZ-10 was the bike's handling. It features an extremely thought out chassis and suspension, tuned for street use. I suspect the new FZ-09 will serve you just fine but I would want to ride the new bike before making a definitive statement. I would suggest lining up a test ride at your local dealer or look into hitting up a Yamaha demo day and see about trying both bikes back to back. As the FZ-09 and the XSR900 now share nearly identical specs, I would imagine this is going to come down to a preference in style, not function.

  • @lifeontwowheels3104

    @lifeontwowheels3104

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the hasty input, Spurgie. I definitely enjoyed the handling as well. I was at a Yamaha demo event last weekend and got to ride the FZ-10 twice and I instantly fell in love. But then I rode the FZ-09/XSR900 (although the '16 model) the next day and was almost equally impressed and my frugal side started to lean towards the 09/900 (4k is a nice chunk of change) especially considering the aforementioned upgrades for the 09 in 2017... There is another demo event this weekend (lucky me) and I will try to ride them back to back for a better comparison but I don't want to base my opinion of the '17 FZ-09 on testing the '16 (are they the same power-wise?). Seeing as how my insurance quotes had them at nearly the same price my deciding factor would be fun, comfort, and maybe fuel economy.. maybe.

  • @MamblaWagon

    Looks like you could actually put a slip on exhuast on this? The FZ09 has specialized slip on exhuast made for it due to its positioning under the bike and the large catalytic converter.

    Just taken ownership of a new 2018 bike and they have changed the power mode layout and throttle delivery in the full fat mode so the big negatives from all the test ride videos out there of the 2016 bike are pretty much taken care of. One thing that hasn't changed is the plank of a seat which gets uncomfortable after 40 mins and the fuel economy, but then, who buys a bike like this for fuel economy? Not me! :)

    A ton of features and options that can possibly fail as the bike ages. Looks like an awesome bike and thanks for the review Revzilla, But Yamaha and any other manufacturer can keep all that fancy Electronic stuff. The only thing I would want is the Cruse Control. In my 26 years of riding experience I have never ridden a bike with Traction Control, I am curious how different it is on the track. Other than that the front of the Bike looks like a Bug just before it hits a windshield :-)

    Would the no lean angle sensor be a deal breaker? The Ninja 1000 for less has a lean angle sensor but does this handle better anyway..I read that cornering could be better? Spurg..and then there is the FZ09...or..I can’t test ride any of these in my town...I’m 6 feet 198 lads 30 inch inseam..which way would you go?

    All great questions.... Lemmy rode the new Ninja 1000 and loved it. He was really impressed with all of the electronics. Personally, I fit better on the FZ-10 and I liked the fact that it got electronic cruise control. The loss of the lean angle sensor wasn't a deal breaker for me, it still gets four stage traction control that works really well. When I went into this review my biggest question was, "Why would I buy this over the FZ-09?" In my mind, the triple engine was more than enough power for the street and I was never a fan of the I-4 design for street use. Compared to the FZ-09 it has better brakes, better suspension, better electronics, it is more comfortable, and honestly, I fell in love with the engine. The retuned cross-plane four builds power evenly and awesomely. For the money, the FZ-09 is a great bike. But for me personally? The FZ-10 is worth the extra coin. By the end of the review I tried buying one of the press units off of Yamaha. But keep in mind, that is for me. What bike are you currently riding? What kind of riding are you looking to tackle? Is luggage important to you? Wind protection? There are a lot of factors that go into answering that question. Can you tell me a bit more about what you're planning on doing with the bike?

    Spurgeon Dunbar Thanks for the feedback. Hello. Well I live in the flatlands, Houston, Texas. I am planning on riding around in the country near my home. Wind protection would be nice, but I can deal with the wind. I won’t something that handles really good and that does not have a snatchy throttle, abrupt on-off, and all that. That’s a real turn off. Probably no track days and no trips. I am about 160 miles from the hill country, and more than that from some real curvy roads. Nimble handling and throttle are my highest priority.

  • @SpurgeonDunbar

    @SpurgeonDunbar

    Both of these bikes, the Ninja 1000 and FZ-10 will give you that, but I would still argue for the FZ-10. I love the power and the handling. That being said, the bike's throttle response is extremely affected by the rider mode you select. Standard mode is the least aggressive with B Mode being the most aggressive (read "snatchy"). I found that A Mode, right in the middle, was the real sweet spot on that machine. If you have the chance to ride them side-by-side, I would highly recommend it. But just flying by the seat of my pants and which one I would choose? I would go FZ-10 all day long.

  • @SpurgeonDunbar

    Prior to riding the FZ-10 I would have said XSR900. The FZ-09 was just too rough around the edges and I didn't like the idea of an inline four when compared to the triple. After riding this bike I immediately tried to buy one. Like, immediately. I asked Yamaha if I could just ride one of their press bikes home and send them a check. Unfortunately they were all spoken for. Since then, Yamaha has up graded the FZ-09 to address its shortcomings, and I am sure it's much more on the same level as the XSR900, but I am already sold. I want an FZ-10. I am lucky enough to get to ride a decent amount of bikes and I usually have an idea of what to expect going into it. Like I said in the written review for this bike, I was flat out wrong with my expectations. This bike won me over to the point of wanting to stick one in my garage. If it were up to me, I would say the FZ-10 without reservation or hesitation.

    I have the same opinion. The real best part of the bike (of course...except the engine.. that is a star..) is the chassis. I'd most of the best bike that a common person can achieve and believe me or not the most incredible is my mt10. I bought it without trying it cos i trusted in yamaha (is my first one) but i always had this idea .... If yamaha could make me a street r1... I enjoyed the tuono v4 but was too radical. I enjoyed my ex s1000r but was not so stable and handle not like the mt 10. I hate the monster

    In Canada, this bike is $16,000 Cdn, that's $6000 more than an FZ-09. As nice as the FZ-10 is, for that kind of money I'm going to also start looking at the Triumph Speed Triple and BMW S1000R, which are both more refined bikes. The FZ-10 is good but rough around the edges for fit, finish, and components. Yamaha should priced this bike around $13,000 Cdn. As nice as the chassis, and engine are I can't justify spending $18,000 Cdn after taxes, stock off the showroom floor.

    The jump from the R3 to the FZ-07 isn't really that big, as the R3's engine is 321cc and 37hp, and the FZ-07 is 689cc and 75hp. If you can reach the limits of the R3, the FZ-07 would be an easy transition. Though Yamaha doesn't offer it here in the US (yet), they offer the naked version of the R3, the MT-03, in other markets. -DrewZilla
