In this first edition of Gear Chat, a new series aimed at discussing classic synths, samplers and effects, we take a look at the mighty DX7. Instantly recognisable in many hits of the 1980's and one of the best-selling synths of all time.
The Yamaha DX7 was an FM synthesis based synth manufactured by the Yamaha Corporation from 1983 to 1989. It was the first commercially successful digital synthesizer.
The monotimbral, 16-note polyphonic DX7 was the moderately priced model of the DX series keyboard synthesizers that included the larger and more elaborate DX1 and DX5; the feature-reduced DX9; and the smaller and not directly compatible DX100, DX11, and DX21.
Over 200,000 of the original DX7 were made, and it remains one of the best-selling synths of all time

Also you guys did the amazing job of bringing back my memory of growing up in the 1980's. With my Yamaha DX7 MK1, I used to buy many Keyboard Magazines, learning about different synths (wished I kept them). Back then, there was no KZread, no online tutorial...... I bought several books, magazines and other reading materials for learning about the DX7. I spent hours and hours looking at the small LCD, pressing buttons and entering data....... Great time in my life!

The DX7 is one of the greatest synths ever made. The stock sounds are crap, but the sounds that are possible via editing and sound sculpting are unlike anything else you will find on any other synthesizer. There is no other synth that sounds like the DX7. Along with the Kurzweil K2000, it is the most versatile synth ever made. The sound palette is as broad and unlimited as one's imagination. You can go from the richest, warmest, most analog sounding pads to extremely gnarly, distorted, metallic percussive hits, from the punchiest bass stabs to shimmering, crystalline marimba and glockenspiel type tones. Like the K2000, it is very underrated and overlooked by many of today's young producers who are intimidated by the lack of knobs, the small screen and button/slider interface. A lot of kids subscribe to the trend of fanatical devotion to analogue to the point where they refuse to touch anything labelled digital.

I totally agree. I don't like those factory patches (only the famous bass, tubular bell etc). The DX7 can produce breathtaking sounds, they are so amazing that I stopped using my Yamaha TG77!!!!!! From rich analog sounds to acoustic pianos, strings, choirs, brass etc, with amazing realism. Long live the DX7!!!

I agree. I have learned to program this beast in the 80ies and it was very time consuming! But after loading all different sounds in my TX816 makes me happy everytime i hear it! Now we have 2018 and the 80ies are still alive somehow....By the way, the manual didnt help a lot.

The Dx7 was an amazing feat of engineering too! It does 96 envelopes out of 1 single chip, and 96 oscillators out of 1 single chip, thanks to doing every oscillator one after the other one by one! Extremely efficient.

Kudos to ADSR. FM synthesis was a very complex and forward thinking way of producing timbres that were impossible with strict analog gear and/or hybrid sample based synths at the time. Most people used the presets which were very cool probably because programming these instruments was a real bear. Back in the day a few of us had the opportunity to study with Lorenz Rychner the author of the original DX7 manual. The sounds are still unique and can add a fresh yet vintage perspective to contemporary music. Thanks to ADSR for keeping electronic music history alive.

Great video guys, I'm 26 and I just recently Got a DX7IIFD and I'll say it now, it is one of the best synthesisers I've ever played, the presets are a mixed bag some are good some not so good, but you can always edit or overwrite them with new sounds, The DX7II is much easier to program too, the bigger LCD screen really helps, the audio also sounds fuller than on the Model 1 DX7, and of course having the Dual Mode is nice, and if you have any floppy disks lying around you can store up to 2000+ sounds on one disk, better than the RAM cart.

thanks for the trip down memory lane. i used to program sounds on this from absolute zero, 10 or 20 completely new sounds from scratch on a good day. once you got used to the program layout, it was really thought out extremely well and efficient. More efficient than anything i'd had my hands on before... and not too much since. it really was an impressive piece of instrument design from the ground up. you mentioned the buttons breaking... but i seldom have seen them break, unless it's treated like trent reznor does. (and i am talking about 100's of thousands of button pushes that i'd perform on a dx7... because it was laid out that well... you actually would perform thousands of edits in a short little time). i have to say that for any synthesizer, that of which i've used 100's of professionally, the dx7 probably gave me the most in it's ability to create a sound from scratch that doesn't actually exist in the real world. To create something new. and that's what i like to use synthesizers for... synthesizing... not emulating... if you want to emulate, especially to emulate well, use a real musician and instrument for that. sorry to get off point. again, thanks for the trip down memory lane, and the history lesson for all of us about this truly top of the world synthesizer. and let me say that the dx7 is truly an instrument... just as the piano is an instrument. it will always be about what is played with it, and that will never be obsolete. it might go out of style for awhile, but all that needs to happen is some newly played inspiration to bring it's voice back in vogue. just like the piano or violin, or guitar... sitting down with one of these instruments allows a musician to express them self in such a way, where "in the box" has nothing to do with that.

The same here, I've been using my DX7 since 1986 and it is still my main synth (I have TX802 and TG77 as well). I've been doing what Brian has been doing, creating new sounds from scratch, as well as emulating acoustic and natural sounds. I know how to push the DX7 further and further to unleash its full potential by creating breathtaking strings, choir, brass, piano, etc (nothing like those factory patches). These sounds still have the uniqueness of the DX7. Like the 80's samplers with lower quality 12 bit DA converters, these machine can produce sounds with amazing realism, yet still artificial. And I really appreciate that kind of sound more and more. For me, modern synths, hybrid synths, romplers and others are too clean to my taste. Cheers, Power DX7.

i remember seeing another studio programmer "swipe" his finger across the operator button/membrannes to mute/unmute while quickly editing/focusing on one aspect (with the other hand) of the sound... instead of "poking: each of those on/off one at a time... it totally changed my attitude of how I could attack a problem/goal in creating a sound... literally achieving thousands of individual edits in such a time compressed manner of a second instead of seconds or minutes. There were all sorts of well designed, logical, smart aspects of the DX7 that most people overlook/dismiss with it's minimalist looking front end.

Wow, that would be an amazing sight! I love sliding my fingers on the DX7 membrane too, although mine is started to crack, so I need to be very gentle with that now. Sounds like you really mastered the DX7 FM synthesis engine!!!! My approach is much slower with a lot of experimentation. The layout of the DX7 is well put, you can just start from the top, Algorithm then just go right, down and start from the left to right. With the algorithms showing on the front panel, you can easily see what you need for making a particular patch. Cheers, Power DX7.

Having been a DX programmer (Session work, etc.) for many years, it was a bear to learn, but in the end it was rather easy to modify in sessions to make it fit. In most cases I ended up layering it (TX rack, analog gear, etc.) and could get away with altering the analog layers in most cases. BTW - Instead of adding chorus to the electric pianos I would layer them and modify the mod speed and depth, which gave you the chorus effect, but in a much cleaner fashion (none of the fuzziness that most chorus devices add to the sound). Did the same with organ sounds to simulate the shift from Chorale to Tremelo.

the dx7 is probably the digital synth that aged best of all. I mean, even today when it seems that almost every keyboardist are only caring about old analougue synths or modern rebuild of them, well, the dx7 still can produce sounds that no other synths (analougue or digital) can do. It seems also that Yamaha has done its best in order to make this beast probably the most difficult synth to learn to program of all times....well, actually I suspect that they didn't fully comprehend how to program it themselves. Anyway, in the right hands this synth has huge potential still today.

The reason the presets were so prominent in the music of that time is that the DX7 was so difficult to program patches for, I auditioned one about three months after launch with the intention of buying one that very day and more or less decided it was definetly for me until I asked about programming patches, the salesman got the book out for me and neither of us could fathom it out and the display was totally useless for programming patches and there was no way I could afford to buy all the cartridges available at the time, I had an OB8 at the time and had a buyer lined up as I couldnt afford to have both, Im so glad I didnt sell it prior to getting a DX7, years later I bought the TX rack and always regretted selling that instrument

The DX7 II is not 2 DX7s. It did have the ability to split and layer but your 16 voices became 8 plus 8. In addition you had performance memory for each patch where the original DX7 had only one set of performance parameters for all of the patches. The DX1 and the DX5 were 2 DX7s.

Guys I need your honest opinion. I have a DX7, Juno 60, RX 11, XP90 I bought it all in the 80's for probably the same reason most bands of the time were using these instruments, except I bought it for personal enjoyment, so they have been taken care of properly, meaning no road work, a couple minor cosmetic scratches from moving them from the rack they use to be in to their original boxes but that is about it, they all work. Should I hang on to it or get rid of it?

I recorded "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" with it on my KZread channel. Those sounds are just amazing straight from the synthesizer. I really enjoy your gear chat shows. Great vid, thanks for doing it ! And loads of great chat in the comments too ! :-) Yes, I also own a DX7 mk1, bought in 1986, it was my, errrm, 5th synth, I think - and it's *still* in my Live Rig now, along with a D-50 and a Triton Le76 ! :-) I learnt how to program it and fill it with my own patches. I did find it difficult for a little while at first, in hindsight, because it was just completely different from anything else.... But once (if ?) you get the hang of it, it is a logical process. But you do have to persevere with it until it "clicks". I've looked after it and it's always lived in a hard case (making it even heavier !! lol) - apart from a few scratches and pyro burns on some keys (very rock 'n' roll !!), it's still in remarkable condition, 30 years on. All my membrane buttons are fine - I've had to replace the mains power cable and I upgraded to a backlit blue LCD screen.... But apart from that, it's "stock". I've even got the BC-1 Breath Controller too ! :-) But here's a question for all you other owners... The internal battery....? I seem to remember reading somewhere in the dim, distant past that the "life expectancy" for the internal battery was 5-7 years....? Well, after 30+ years, mine is still the original, factory-fitted battery - and it still works just fine, reading 2.8 volts :-) Have any of you guys had to replace your battery...?

+Jim stout Hi Jim ! Yes, when time comes to replace my battery, I'll modify mine to a battery holder.... But frankly, I'm fairly staggered that the original battery is still fine after all this time :-O The BC-1 was a bit of a score actually.... Only got it about 6-7 years ago - I found it (boxed) in a "Bargain Bin" at a local music shop for £1 !!! The owner didn't even know what it was :-) It works perfectly (tho I practically never use it, to be honest) - but they go for anything up to £120 on ebay !! But thats typical of a lot of the original DX accessories - ROM and RAM Carts were selling for more than an actual DX7 not so long ago.... But prices for the DX7 (and others synths) have started creeping back up again in recent years. As I said, I still often use mine in my live rig now - but its major weakness - you really have to use outboard effects with it. I always run through a good old spring reverb and Chorus is essential for any strings or pad patch. :-)

Gary S It should never leave it. I am a DX7 fanatic. Checkout my channel. And even today I have not heard a greater PURE SYNTH. People talk about the Roland D50. It was never in the same league as the pure raw power of FM through the DX7. What roland clevery did to create an illusion was use effects layering and sampled waveforms. Take all that away and the DX7 is the greater synth.

  • @garys-617

    @garys-617

    7 жыл бұрын

Yes, I've already seen some stuff on your channel - nice tutorials, well done :-) The DX7 and the D-50 are very different animals : I would agree with you that the DX7 is the greater *pure* synth, starting with nothing more than completely electronically generated waveforms - no samples, no effects - just FM sine waves. However, when creating a sound, you "use all the tools in your toolbox" - and each synth has different "tools" available. I'm often bemused by comments made on KZread reviews/demos, when synth "snobs" say things like "sounds good but its sadly smothered in effects", or "take off all the EQ and effects and let us hear what it really sounds like".... This seems to be happening a lot these days with reviews of the Deepmind 12.... But why ?? At the end of the day, the EQ and effects are an integral part of a final sound. And sadly, as I said before, the lack of these features on-board, is the DX7 mk1's biggest weakness, certainly compared to the D-50. So for this reason, if I *had* to make the choice for just one "desert island keyboard", I have to say it would be the D-50 over the DX7, for richer, more widely useable sounds :-)

It's sad to see the DX7 MK1 trashed. It's one of the best 'pure' synths of all time. It's still underrated and there are still a lot of untapped potentials inside the DX7, even today! I'm a proud owner of the DX7 MK1 and my focus is to de-mythtify the DX7 that it's more than just all those present patches, like electric pianos and bell sounds. It can produce amazing and fat analog-like sounds, as well as breathtaking strings, pads, male & female choirs, brass, pianos....... I have some demos coming up that will show FM through my DX7 is the greatest maker of non sampled drum and percussion sounds. Its fast attack and natural metallic resonance lends itself to percussive sounds better than any other form of synthesis. John Chowning is a genius. And through his work with Japans Yamaha. Gave us the most perfect amazing synthesiser of alltime. It had to be COMPLEX in its architecture. Because it can do just about any sound you can imagine and some you cant. It will soon be time for me to honor Both Chowning and Yamahas great engineers. With a piece I have composed on my MK1 DX7 called PIONEER (the story of FM) It will feature a string sound that brought tears to my eyes when I first coaxed it from the heart of my DX7. For me there will only ever be one form of synthesis. And that is FM. It inspires me everyday.

Maybe you mentioned this, but I missed it. The original DX keyboard had a max velocity level of 116. When you played it from another keyboard with a range up to 127, it became brighter and more brittle because the sounds were not designed for the higher velocity level. You had to alter the modulator amplitude levels to compensate if you were doing this. A perfect example of this velocity overdriven Rhodes on Tina Marie's "Lover Girl" .

The DX7 was also my first synth, back in the late 80s. My other synth was a Casio CZ101. I never learnt to program either of them. It all seemed horribly complicated and difficult to understand, unlike my drum machine. I now wish I'd got a nice, easy, subtractive synth instead. Anyway, thanks for an interesting and informative video.

The DX7 is a game changer. Not many instruments have had the same impact as it had during 80's. It started a new era that the D50, M1, and many others exploited. One comment about the DX7 crushing the Reface DX. The times have changed. You can get two new Reface DXs for the price of a used DX7. While the DX7 is a legend, the Reface improves the usability, cleans up the dirty electronics, and adds effects. The Reface DX is more of a modern DX100 than a DX7 so the comparison isn't fair. The MODX FM-X engine would be a better modern Yamaha to compare to the DX7. I could actually use a Reface DX to make new sounds on the device. Sure, you could do that on the DX7 but not as easy.

It's nice to get the instrument in such condition. I saw one on eBay, nearly brand new old stock, in original new looking box. I think the bidding started at $800 or something like that. I got my D-50 in condition like that, with all original documentation, the card, box, brochures, receipt, etc. It cost me $1,200 about 3 years ago or so. That's how I like it. Its my third D-50 now. The first one was quite a dog, beaten up and all. I sold it. The second one I got for $450 - very clean. I kept that one, and of course the one I got recently. I still regret losing the auction for super MINT in clean box D-550. I bid $440, I lost it. I underestimated the market. It was around 3 years ago also. Now a D-550 can go for $700, easily. Anyway, I am sure there is going to be more reviews on this KZread channel. By the way, the tubular bell is heard in Harold Faltermayer's intro to Top Gun. You could have mentioned that. Also, there were a lot of very good keyboard players that used the DX7. Chick Corea comes to mind. Music production is one thing, but there's nothing like a virtuoso keyboard performance on the DX7. I'd love to see Hiromi play that.

If I knew that vintage synths are in demand now, then I might have used my DX7 differently (much more gentler)......... But to me it's more to do with my memory of play around with my DX7 which is more important. Spending hours and hours, scratching my head, trying this and that, that was the fun I had and continue to have with my DX7. Not just having the DX7 physically, but actually pushing its FM synthesis to its maximum potential, and that's how I get my enjoyment out from my DX7. Cheers, Power DX7.

  • @dvamateur

Power DX7 I wouldn't really call the DX7 a "vintage" synthesizer. It's a computer, and calling any computer "vintage" sounds like an oxymoron. Sure, if we come up with different ways of doing computing that is not based on binary system and it doesn't use electricity, then yes, we can call all electronic devices and computers things of the past then. But that's not the case at the present time.

  • @jimstout

    @jimstout

Andrew, I'm sure you can appreciate the fact that anything in the digital world over 20 years old can be considered "vintage." The Jupiter 6 was introduced the same year and it is considered "vintage." So, in the term of modern "Instruments", It is vintage. Much like cars. But instead... let us argue about the term "vintage" as it stands today. That's more important than recognizing this amazing instrument. :-)

The truth about the DX7 and it´s innovation was: Up to then we basically had analog synths which are limited of course. The only synth which could produce sounds that were kinda forerunner of the DX7 was the PPG whoch costed a fortune. Then the DX7 came out and it was the first synth that could produce sounds like mallets, bells, glass-sounds, Rhodes sounds etc. No analog synth was able to do that. So if you had a Roland or Prophet analog synth and a DX7 you were on top of the game.

By the way, DX7II is not two DX7's. DX1 and DX5 are two DX7's in one, with total of 32-voice polyphony, two cartridge slots, etc. DX7II is a duo-timbral DX7, maybe to compete with the D-50, not sure. DX7II is 16-note polyphony, like the DX7.

  • @dvamateur

If you link two DX7II's and make one play odd notes and the other even notes, you'll heave then you get DX5's sonic capability, which is 32-note of polyphony. Although I'd very much prefer the DX5, better form factor to have 32-voices in one instrument than having to link two keyboards together to achieve that. It also looks better than DX7 or DX7II. DX5 is a very high-end instrument and very rare. Never even mind the DX1. A musical instrument is not only a sound engine. It's the whole package. KX88 is also an excellent instrument, even if it produces no sound of its own. KX88 has great keyboard feel. To me, personally, the KX88 paired with TX816 is a very compelling FM synthesizer option. Those keyboard oriented FM patches really come to their own under weighted keyboard action.

Very stiff, uncomfortable, and without interesting words. Iam 27 years old. Why are these people afraid of this instrument. They sound like this machine can bite them. and I bet it has. Sounds like they could not figure it out all in general.
